Brissett, Cheltenham Earn Titles; Top Marks All Around: Girls' Indoor States Recap

Girls' Distance Recap

Germantown Academy's Abbe Goldstein entered Penn State without any indoor state titles, but she left on Saturday with two of them in a double that will live in state meet history.

Goldstein started with the mile. She led early on and slowly strung out the field, running an incredibly smart race. She clocked a 4:53.97 for the win. Unionville's Anna Juul was second in 4:56.14, just one one hundredth ahead of Downingtown West's Emma Planck, who placed third. A pair of freshman--Taryn Parks and Marlee Starliper--were fourth and fifth.

Goldstein then came back later in the 3000 meters, looking for another win. Goldstein hung with leader Clara Savchik of North Allegheny, who was able to string out the field like Goldstein did in the mile. With one lap to go, Goldstein took off and threw down a great kick to win the 3000 meters in 9:46.74. Savchik ran a strong race from the front for almost the whole thing to clock in at 9:50.57 for second. Cheltenham's MaryGrace Rittler was third and Conestoga's Dominique Shultz was fourth.

The 800 meters was one of the day's most thrilling races. Cardinal O'Hara's Olivia Arizin came in as the favorite, but it was Penn Wood's Terri Turner that came away the champion, running a very quick US#2 time of 2:08.58 for the win. Arizin took it out hard, but Turner never lost complete contact and passed her in the final 150 or so for the win. Arizin clocked in at 2:10.75 for second.
