PIAA States Preview: Boys' Jumps

AAA Boys' High Jump Preview

Last year, Jonathon Squadrito of LaSalle jumped the best he ever had to that point in his career on a day that many others struggled to get their footing on a wet surface. In the end, Squadrito took home the AAA state title, clearing 6-06. He's back this year, looking to make it two-in-a-row. He's cleared 6-07 (and 6-08 indoors) and should certainly be a factor after a second place finish at indoor states.

But the top seed and PA#1 entering the weekend is Trejon Turner of Tunkhannock. The District 2 champion, jumped 6-09 to win the district title. Just a sophomore, Turner's become one of the state's most exciting jumpers and he's got the talent to take home gold this weekend.

Two other boys in AAA have cleared 6-08 this season. Ephrata's Elie Basenga and Bangor Area's Anthony Jones have had strong seasons and should mix it up with the best for the title. Basenga took sixth at states last year. Another returning medalist from last year is Emmanuel Mitchell of Penn Hills. The WPIAL runner-up cleared 6-07.5 this season and comes back after taking third at states last year.

In addition to Squadrito, four others in the AAA field have jumped bests of 6-07 this spring. In that list is Reading's Juan Mato-Segura, McKeesport's Terron Taylor, George Junior Republic's Kyfeas Holmes, and Scranton's Ky'ron Harbin.
