Wellington Zaza of Garnet Valley had a career day in his final indoor state championship meet. The senior came home with three gold medals and a 3rd place medal on a relay to lead his team to a 2nd place finish. Zaza started the day with a meet record in the 60 meter hurdles in 7.84 and then in the semifinals and finals, he ran 7.79 to win the title and earn US#3 honors. His other two golds came in the field events as he took home the long jump title on his last jump to come away as the winner with a US#6 mark of 23-9. Finally in the triple jump, Zaza bettered his seasonal best by one inch with a US#8 mark of 49-11!

Max Norris of Harriton became the 2nd boys distance runner to break the 8:30 mark in the 3000 meter run, pulling away from the field in the final 300 meters to win the event in 8:28.93. Ethan Martin of Fox Chapel and Dan Savage of Cardinal O'Hara ran lifetime bests to finish in the top 3. Jack Huemmler of Strath Haven made up for a tough race last weekend at the Millrose Games to surge in the final two laps of the mile in 59 seconds to win the state crown in 4:17.95. Tony Russell of West Chester Henderson and Tom Coyle of Lasalle rounded out the top 3. The 800 meter run was won in a rare wire to wire fashion by Brad Rivera of Bensalem. The senior ran a big lifetime personal best in the event with a US#4 time of 1:52.43! Christian Sanders of Upper Merion finished 2nd and Jeff Wiseman of Council Rock South finished 3rd.

As for the rest of the sprint action, Niager Mathis of Swenson was a double winner, taking home the 60 meter dash in 6.89 and then coming back and winning the 200 meter dash in 21.95, both PA#1 marks for FAT performances. Cody Minnig of Neshaminy took 2nd in the 60 meter dash while Tyler Whitmore of Upper Moreland was the runner up in the 200 meter dash. The 400 meter dash went to Qhyle Elijah of Bensalem in 48.76 to edge out Nick Stenderowicz of Pennridge. Jimmy Brooks of Wilson (3) finished 3rd.

In other field event action, Elizae McDonald of Coatesville came away with the high jump title with a clearance of 6-6 with no misses. Inb Short of Milton Hershey and Charles Wilson-Adams of Tyrone Area finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Tim Moses of Palmyra did not get the chance to clear 16 feet for the 5th time this season in the pole vault, but still came away with the state title with a clearance of 15-6. In the shot put, Jason Coon of Schuylkill Valley emerged as the champion by almost two feet with a US#9 mark of 59-7.75. Jon Yohman of Wilmington and Luke Lewis of Hickory both threw 57-10.25.

In the relays, Norristown continued their 2013 superiority in the 4x200 meter relay taking home the gold in 1:29.68 just ahead of Pennridge (1:29.87) and Garnet Valley (1:29.93). In the 4x400 meter relay, Pennridge overcame Bensalem to win the gold with a US#3 time of 3:19.47. Bensalem ran 3:20.75 for 2nd and Penn Wood ran 3:21.76. Bensalem did win the 4x800 meter relay with a US#7 time of 7:51.80 ahead of West Chester Henderson (7:54.73) and Pennsbury (7:54.88). Current US#1 Lasalle decided to run the distance medley relay and after taking the lead going into the 3rd leg, Tom Coyle brought it home on the anchor leg with a state leading and US#4 time of 10:19.47. Council Rock North finished 2nd in 10:20.34 and Strath Haven finished 3rd in 10:20.62.

Bensalem came away as the team champions with 41 points! Garnet Valley was 2nd with 36 and Pennridge scored 31 points to finish 3rd.


Swenson girls were firing on all cylinders from the first gun to the final race as they repeated as team champions with a huge score of 62 points ahead of Cheltenham and Penn Wood! Swenson had big performances in the sprint relays at the end of the meet. They started with a meet record performance in the 4x200 meter relay with a US#4 time of 1:39.87, which is just over 4 tenths of a second off the all time state record of 1:39.44 set by William Penn in 1997. They beat out defending champions Pennridge and Penn Wood for the title They capped off their big state title winning performance with a 3:55.99 win in the 4x400 meter relay to repeat as champions in that event ahead of Penn Wood and Pennsbury.

In the distance relays, Great Valley ended Strath Haven's reign as 4x800 meter champions, running most of the relay on their own with a state leading time of 9:19.40 to cruise ahead of Pennsbury and Garnet Valley. They led the state in both relays until West Chester Henderson took the state lead in the distance medley relay with a US#8 time of 12:09.28. Cardinal O'Hara finished 2nd and Germantown Friends finished 3rd.

The field events had most of the hot performances of the day led by Marshay Ryan of Chambersburg, who completed the long and triple jump sweep with huge marks. Her triple jump mark of 40-11.50 to set the meet record and soar all the way to the top of the national list! Lanae Newsome of Brookville finished 2nd and Lydia Dennis of Mars Area was 3rd. Ryan also won the long jump with a new state leading mark of 18-7.75. Dennis and Newsome exchanged places in the long jump, with Dennis finishing 2nd and Newsome 3rd. Sophomore Cyre Virgo of Fleetwood won her first ever indoor state championship in the high jump, tying the national lead with a clearance of 5-10! Defending champion Megan McCloskey of Germantown Academy finished 2nd and India McCoy of Ambridge Area was 3rd with both clearing 5-6. Freshman Emily Stauffer of Cocalico set the pace on her first throw of the shot put competition and never looked back. She threw a lifetime best of 43-6.75 to win by almost 3 feet over Taylor Hojnacki of Central Bucks South and Rachel Fyalkowski of Hempfield (7). Amanda Benninghoff of Council Rock South came away with the state title in the pole vault with a clearance of 12 feet to beat the Hempfield (7) duo of Lexi Masterson and Bridget Guy.

On the track, the fastest 3000 meter run in the history of the state took place with 3 juniors and 1 senior breaking the 10 minute mark. Courtney Smith of Unionville led for most of the race with Tessa Barrett of Abington Heights, Regan Rome of Dallas and Veronica Eder of Central Bucks East trying to run with her. After leaving Eder and Rome behind, Smith made a move on the final lap to try and shake Barrett off, but Barrett hung on and passed by Smith in the final 50 meters to win her first state championship and set a new all time PA state record with a time of 9:47.73, which is also US#5! Smith also broke the old state record with a US#6 time of 9:48.24. Rome and Eder both ran 9:53.59 to share the US#10 spot. Emma Keenan of Gwynedd Mercy Academy repeated as champion in the 800 meter run in the same way she won the title last season by going out from the gun and running wire to wire to win in 2:10.28, good for US#5. Natalie Deacon of West Chester Henderson and Devon Towell of West Chester East finished 2-3. Marissa Sheva of Pennridge earner her long awaited first state gold medal, taking the mile run in 4:58.46 after making a big move in the final two laps of the race.

In the sprint events, Jody Ann Evans of Quakertown completed her two year unbeaten streak with another state championship win in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.47 to tie for US#3! Katelyn Jackson of Cheltenham finished 2nd and Natalia Pinkney of Pennridge finished 3rd. Jackson did take home to 200 meter dash with a state leading time of 24.72 to tie for US#10 ahead of Caela Williams of Penn Wood and Evans of Quakertown. Williams still earned her first individual gold medal, coming from behind on Hanna Green of Greater Latrobe to win the 400 meter dash in 56.01. Imani Harris-Quillen of Swenson finished 3rd out of the unseeded heat. In the 60 meter hurdles, Kayla Coley of Cheltenham improved on her 2012 silver medal finished and came away as the champion with a US#6 time of 8.65. Amy Hicks of Swenson finished 2nd and Gina Lupica of Villa Joseph Marie finished 3rd.

Two sophomores took home some medals in the Finals held at the Armory in New York. Jenny Bellefleur of Parkway Northwest HS, won the girls 55 meter dash in tie PA#13 7.46, while Kanae Taylor of Engineering & Science was 5th in the 400 in 59.52.
