The Armory
Christmas has past and today teams hit the track to get some good competition and run some fast times!
 Like they have been since the opening night, Cheltenham once again impressed, this time on a bigger stage. With 2 wins in the 4x200 meter relay in PA already this season, they went to the Armory and not only won the 4x200, but ran an emphatic US#2 time of 1:42.35! PA also had two other teams in that 4x200 meter relay final. Ridley finished 4th with a time of 1:49.10 (1:48.08 prelims) and Penn Wood ran 1:49.14 to finish 5th (1:46.62 prelims). Cheltenham also finished 3rd in the 4x55 shuttle hurdle relay with a US#5 time of 34.12! Strath Haven also had a big day in the relay events, taking home two gold medals! The 4x400 meter relay won the event out of the non seeded heat with a state leading 4:03.77. Strath Haven did contest the seeded heat of the 4x800 meter relay and came away victorious with a US#2 time of 9:31.94. North Penn ran 12:57.47 to finish 5th in the distance medley relay.In individual events, Christina Holmes of Penn Wood won the 300 meter dash with a time of 41.09! Allie Wilson of Strath Haven finished 6th in the invitational 800 meter run with a PA#3 time of 2:18.40. Janiel Slowly of Cheltenham won the long jump by nearly a foot with a PA#3 mark of 17-9.50. Teammate Darneesha Lacroix won the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet even. Emily Campbell of Slippery Rock won the shot put with a mark of 38-11.75 Grace Becker of Central Bucks East cleared 5-0 to finish tied for 2nd in the high jump. For the boys, PA placed two 4x200 meter relay teams into the national top five behind defending national champions Union Catholic of New Jersey. Delaware Valley Charter ran a US#3 time of 1:30.84 to finish 2nd in the 4x200 meter relay final, while North Penn ran a US#4 time of 1:31.27 to finish 3rd. In other relay action, Delaware Valley Charter finished 6th in the 4x400 meter relay with a state leading 3:30.60. North Penn finished 2nd in the 4x800 meter relay with a US#3 time of 8:09.91. Strath Haven finished 4th with a US#9 time of 8:16.78. In the individual events, Gift Omo-Ekpadi of North Penn jumped a PA#2 mark of 44-9.50 to win the triple jump. State leader Morgan Shigo of Fleetwood Area won the shot put with a mark of 55-9.75. Blair Wilkins of Downingtown West jumped 21-2 to win the long jump. Girls Highlights

Taylor Williams ran 7.09 to win the 55 meter dash and move up to number 4 in the national rankings! Jenny Bellefleur of Parkway Northwest ran 26.3 to finish 5th in the 200 meter dash. Courtney Washington of Overbrook ran 60.7 to finish 5th in the 400 meter dash. Nicole Kurtz of Abington Friends ran 2:22.84 to finish 2nd in the 800 meter run. Justine Morgan of Upper Dublin threw 38-1.25 to finish 3rd in the shot put.

Taylor Williams, running unattached, has been the most consistent performer in the 55 meter dash entering the finals. At last week’s semi-finals, she ran 7.21 to go to number 10 on the US national list. Lauren Channer of East Stroudsburg South punched her ticket to the finals with a 5th place finish last week. Jenny Bellefleur of Parkway Northwest has the 3rd best point total in the 200 meter dash. Her best time this season 26.2 from the first round of Colgate action, but she will hope to improve on that time on Saturday. Courtney Washington of Overbrook enters the 400 meter dash with 6th highest point total. She enters the finals after a 3rd place semi-final finish in 59.1. Cydney Christian of Upper Dublin earned a share of the last spot with her 60.0 performance in the same race.
A trio of PA girls will contest the 800 meter final. Kanae Taylor of Engineering and Science returns to the finals with a seasonal best of 2:21 from the opening round. Nicole Kurtz of Abington Friends enters the race with a lot of momentum after a big 2:23.3 performance in the semi-finals. Sarena Shuman of Science Leadership Academy ran a seasonal best 2:27.3 last week to earn a finals berth. Finally, Justine Morgan of Upper Dublin will contest the shot put. The senior has a seasonal best of 38-4.50 from the opening DVGTCA meet on December 13. |

Lafayette College
Paige Stoner of Pottsville ran a PA#5 5:19.65 and a PA#2 time of 10:35.49 to win both the mile and 3000 meter runs. Taylor Chapman of Pennridge ran a PA#4 time of 7.83 to cruise to victory in the 60 meter dash. Haley Preschutti of Spring Ford ran 2:22.49 to win the 800 meter run. Kennedy Shank of Northern moved up to PA#3 in the pole vault with a winning clearance of 11-6. Emily Campbell of Slippery Rock won her 2nd shot put competition in 24 hours, winning this meet with a mark of 38-1. Casey Harewood of Liberty cleared 5-3 to win the high jump. Aspen Gaita of Stroudsburg jumped a PA#2 mark of 36-5.25 to beat out PA#3 Nicolette Serratore (36-1.75) to win the triple jump. Asanna Brunner of Central Dauphin East finished 2nd in the long jump with a T-PA#4 mark of 17-7.
For the boys, Joey Logue of Pennridge repeated as 800 meter champion with a comfortable victory in a PA#3 time of 1:58.17. Austin Shupp of Palmerton ran 8.40 to win the 60 meter hurdles. Ryan Wilkes of Valley View cleared 14-6 for the 2nd time this season to win the pole vault. Morgan Shigo won the shot put event for the 2nd meet in a row with a mark of 54-5.50. Gregory Johnson of Schuylkill Valley (21-8.50) held off Joe Bush of Spring Ford (21-6.50) to win the long jump. Bush also earned a 2nd place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 43-4.75. The annual Christmas City relays is a massive post-Christmas competition. Some of PA’s best teams will take on teams from New Jersey, New York and Delaware for medals and good performances.
Pennridge, the national indoor runners up in the 2013 boys 4x400 meter relay will run their first 4x400 meter relay of the season. Mike Class and Joey Logue will lead the relay as the returning members of that strong team. Pennridge will also contest the 4x200 meter relay for the first time this season with Norristown. Class will also contest the 200 meter dash while Logue will enter the 800 meter run as the defending champion. Mike Waters of Imhotep will be a medal contender in the 60 meter dash along with Freedom’s Tony Flatts. 2013 state qualifier James Waters of Central Dauphin East gets his season underway in the 60 meter hurdles on Saturday. He ran 8.58 at states last season. Tyrone Money of Imhotep will join Class in the 200 meter dash and so will David O’Such of Spring Ford, who has a 51 second 400 meter time under his belt this season. Colin Abert of Easton returns to the track after his 2nd place finish at the cross country state championships in the AAA race. The senior will run the mile and will enter as the favorite. In the field events, Ryan Wilkes of Valley View enters the pole vault as a favorite to win the event. The junior has already cleared 14-6 this season and will look to edge closer to the 15 foot mark. There will be a head to head dual in the shot put between Morgan Shigo of Fleetwood and Shawn Scornaienchi of Father Judge. Shigo has a seasonal best of 56-10.75 from the Franklin and Marshall Opener on December 7 while Scornaienchi has a best of 53-4 from last week’s Kutztown Maroon and Gold Classic. Gregory Johnson of Schuylkill Valley will enter the triple jump as the favorite. The senior ended the 2013 outdoor season near the 44 foot mark and will look to jump start his season by matching that performance. In the girls competition, Methacton and Girls High will go for big marks in the 4x200 meter relay. Methacton has already run 1:47 at last week’s Bishop Loghlin Games. Methacton will also run the 4x400 meter relay and they will be joined by Archbishop Ryan, who bring some talented experience from their 2nd place Philadelphia Catholic League Championship indoor squad. In the individual track events, Taylor Chapman of Pennridge will contest the 60 and 200 meter dashes. The junior enters the 60 dash with a lifetime best of 7.85 from last season and 26.35 in the 200 from her freshman year of 2012. In the hurdles, Sierra Ne smith of Girls High will go head to head with the Methacton duo of Nicolette Serratore and Jenny Martin. Martin placed 7th in the 55 meter hurdles at the Bishop Loughlin Games last week while Nesmith enters with the best personal best in the field (9.21 at states in 2013). Aspen Gaita of Stroudsburg will contest this trio coming off of an 8.72 performance for 55 meters at Kutztown last weekend. In the 400, Liz Reid of Lansdale Catholic will look to dip under the 60 second mark. The junior has an indoor best of 1:00.02 from the state meet last year and has started this season with a 1:02.20 performance last week. Imhotep’s Avani Dorsey and LaShawn Avery will challenge Reid in the event. Paige Stoner of Pottsville will run the mile and the 3000 meter runs to kick off her indoor season. She finished cross country with the rarely seen honor of medaling at the state championships for four years. Veronica Wheeler of Nazareth Academy will run with Stoner in the 3000. She has run under 11:20 already this season. In the field events, Casey Harewood of Liberty will compete in the high jump. The senior has a lifetime best of 5-4 from last year’s state meet. Jenny Martin of Methacton and Ariana Przybylowski of Pennridge will meet in the long jump. Martin has a seasonal best of 17-7 while Przybylowski has a 2013-14 best of 17-6.50. Kennedy Shank of Northern will compete in the pole vault. Thus far this season, she has cleared 11 feet three times in three meets, with two 11-3 performances. Emily Campbell of Slippery Rock and Erin Sample of Nazareth Academy will go head to head in the shot put. Sample has thrown 37-1 thus far this season. Finally, Gaita and Serratore will square off in the triple jump, with both jumpers having hit the 37 foot mark in their careers. |

The Burdette Classic is the annual curtain closer on the calendar year and each year the athletes perform at a high level that gets their coaches, teammates, and supporters exctied about what the next year will bring. The 2013 edition of this meet was no different. Overall, there were 28 state qualifying performances on the girls side and 41 on the boys side, a grand total of 69 for the day!
 The boys were highlighted by a US#2 and US#3 performance in the 60 meter hurdles. Donaldo Benjamin of Delaware Valley Charter ran 8.20 in the prelim rounds to earn US#2 for about an hour. In the finals, however, J'Von Jennings of Downingtown East defeated Benjamin in the finals with a new US#2 time of 8.18! In the 60 meter dash, both Tyler Whitmore of Upper Moreland and Nigel Hill of Twin Valley ran US#10 time of 6.99, with Whitmore earning the victory by a few thousanths of a second. Whitmore would also win the 200 meter dash with a state leading and US#5 time of 22.40. Eric Jones of Newmann Goretti also became a state leader, winning the 400 meter dash in 50.83. Jaxson Hoey of Malvern Prep led three runners to the top three spots on the state list in the mile with a winning and PA#1 time of 4:26.81. The top four in the 3000 meter run were PA#s 2-5 with Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East edging out Jim Belfatto of Cardinal O'Hara to win the race 8:58.64 to 9:01.02.
In the field events, Cecil Davis of Upper Darby became the new state leader in the triple jump with a mark of 46-3, good for US#11. Tra-C Davis of Coatesville cleared 6-6 to move to PA#3 and tie for US#6 in the high jump. Darrik Muroski of Coatesville threw a PA#4 mark of 52-3.50 to win the shot put. Finally in the relays, Cheltenham set the lone meet record of the day, winning the 4x200 meter relay in 1:32.12, good for PA#4 and US#10. They capped off the day with a state leading performance in the 4x400 meter relay out of an unseeded heat, running a US#5 3:26.20, just .01 off the meet record.

For the girls, Markeeta Thomas of Paul Robeson continued her surge up the top of the national 60 meter hurdle rankings. The junior cruised to victory in the event, improving on her state leading mark and moving up to US#2 with her time of 8.86! Lauren Channer of East Stroudsburg South took home the 60 meter dash (PA#6 7.85) and 200 meter dashes (26.51). Hanna Brosky of Emmaus won the 400 meter dash in a state leading time of 58.12 to beat PA#2 Holly Sullivan of Howen J Roberts (58.54). In the field events, Quadaisha Newkirk of Paul Robeson won the triple jump with a PA#2 mark of 36-6 and defeated the current state leader by a full foot. Macey Tanseco of Perkiomen Valley threw a PA#4 mark of 39-9.75 to win the shot put comfortably. In the relays, Upper Darby edged out Paul Robeson and Neumann Goretti to win the 4x200 meter relay in a PA#2 time of 1:46.28. In the 4x400 meter relay, Neumann Goretti edged out Paul Robeson to win the relay 4:07.00 to 4:07.68.

The annual Burdette Classic is a holiday tradition for Philly Area schools to put spikes on and put on a performance that can jump start their indoor season for the January run. Class AAA cross country runner up Colin Abert of Easton will compete in the mile against independent school state champion Jaxson Hoey of Malvern and top 35 AAA cross country finisher Billy Caldwell of Downingtown East. Only one runner thus far has cracked 4:30 (Christian Kardish of Holy Ghost Prep) but this trio will have something to say about that. The 3000 meter run looks to be a hotly contested race with veteran runners Jim Belfatto of Cardinal O’Hara and Matt Willig of Great Valley squaring off against up and coming stars like Casey Comber of Hatboro Horsham and Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East. In 2012-13, the 3000 meter run was the deepest event in the state. Will that be the same story in 2013-14? The 800 meter run has made a case already for that honor and Monday’s run may enhance the debate. Liam O’Connell of Pennsbury and Connor Holm of Radnor had 2013 outdoor bests of 1:58 and 1:56 respectively and both qualified for states in cross country out of district 1. The head to head battle between these two could add on to the quickly growing list of sub 2:00 runners in the event this season. With Wellington Zaza moving on the collegiate circuit, it’s time for a new class of hurdlers to emerge. Aaron Elocock of Delco Christian, Kornelius Klah of Pennsbury, and Donaldo Benjamin of Delaware Valley Charter look to lead this class. In the 60 and 200 meter dashes, Tyler Whitmore of Upper Moreland will be the favorite to take home gold. The junior was a medalist at states in the 60 dash in 2012 and the 200 meter dash in 2013. Whitmore will face off against sprinters who are looking to put their name on the map in a big meet for the very first time. Before injury halted his 2013 season, Dave Stellato of Wissahickon was one of top 400 meter runners in the state. Now he returns for his senior season as the top returner in the event (4th) and Monday will be his full debut. Frank Brophy of Central Bucks East is having his first taste of indoor track and will challenge the veteran. Brophy ran 49.78 last spring. Pennsbury will be heavy favorites in both sprint relays. They currently hold the 2nd best 4x200 meter time in the country and are the state leaders in the 4x400 meter relay. Cheltenham and Delaware Valley Charter have run strong 4x200s this season and will challenge the Falcons on Monday, while North Penn and Penn Wood will be the top challengers in the 4x400. In the distance relays, cross country team qualifiers Penncrest will take their first crack at the 4x800 and distance medley. They have been one of the most consistent teams in the event in recent years, and 2014 shouldn’t be any different. 2012 state champions Great Valley and Council Rock South with mid distance superstar Jeff Wiseman will challenge in the DMR. In the field events, the high jump will be a head to head matchup between Ishmael Wright of Quakertown and Andy Pancoast of Malvern Prep. Both cleared 6-6 last spring. Pancoast will be making his season debut while Wright will look to improve on his 6-5 clearance on December 21. The triple jump will feature 2013 state runner up Cecil Simpson of Upper Darby. He brings a personal best of 46-2 from the state meet and will be one of the jumpers to watch throughout the season. 56 foot thrower Darrik Muroski of Coatesville will look to bring his outdoor throwing success to the indoor circle. In the girls competition, the mile and 3000 meter runs will feature some of 2013’s best cross country runners looking to get their indoor campaigns on the right track. The mile will feature Anja Weiler of Downingtown East, Mikayla Stoudt of Parkland and Grace Galligan of Springfield Delco, current and former state cross country qualifiers. The 3000 meter run will feature state qualifiers Jenna Reimer of North Penn and Katie Connell of Archbishop Wood. In the 800, Hanna Brosky of Emmaus will make her season debut in the event and will be one to watch as one of the favorites come the state championships. New school, same results is the story thus far for Markeeta Thomas of Paul Robeson. The former Swenson star has surged to the top of the 60 meter hurdle rankings and will look to break 9 seconds before the new year. Teammate Jameela Muhammad has had similar success in the 60 meter dash since switching colors and will be a favorite to win on Monday. Colgate Games 55 meter dash finalist Lauren Channer of East Stroudsburg South will face off against Muhammad in the 200 meter dash. Holly Sullivan of Owen J Roberts will also challenge the duo and will lead the charge in the 400 meter dash. The senior has started the season well in the long jump and the hurdles and now the 400 and 200 will be her next opportunities to continue her hot start. In the sprint relays, Upper Darby, Paul Robeson and Neumann Goretti will square off in the 4x200 meter relay. Each squad had started the season impressively the event and will look to improve. Robeson and Neumann Goretti will also challenge 4x400 meter relay favorites Springside Chestnut Hill. The state best is 4:03 and that mark looks to be under threat when these schools face off. North Penn will look to show their distance squad depth in the 4x800 and distance medley relays. Penncrest (4x8) and Great Valley (DMR) will challenge the distance powerhouse. In the field events, Alex Heuer of Boyertown will look to improve upon her state lead in the triple jump. The senior has a mark of 36-10.50 from December 20. The high jump will feature 5-3 jumper Tanise Edwards of Northeast HS and 5-4 jumper Shelby Samuels of Conwell Egan. The state lead currently sits at 5-6. In the pole vault, Lyndsi Ross-Trevor of Montclair Kimberly Academy will look for two wins in 48 hours after clearing 11-6 to win the Christmas City Relays on Saturday. In the shot put, PA#4 Macey Tanseco of Perkiomen Valley will be looking for her first win of the season after two runner up finishes and a 38-1 season best.
