When a record falls at the PENNSYLVANIA TRACK CLASSIC, it is usually a pretty impressive one. The meet used to be the only game in town on the last Saturday in March, but with more competition for teams, fields have grown a little smaller (There were more than a dozen meets in PA on March 31). Well, there's no cure for that better than continuing to attract a high level of talent that includes (but is certainly not limited to) junior phenom Ryann Krais of Methacton and senior wide receiver-defensive back-sprinter-triple jumper Brandon Bing of Cheltenham. Their performance on Saturday earned them the female and male Track Athletes of the Meet. Krais set records in the 100 hurdles in the prelims in 14.25, and the 300 hurdles in 42.33. She split 11.0 and 55.3 in anchoring Methacton's 4x100 and 4x400. Bing won the 100 in 10.85 and the 200 in 22.03. There were impressive performances at every turn, circle and runway, as well. Wissahickon did a little switching in the opening event of the day, the Distance Medley Relay. Usually anchored by Nick Crits, the junior took the baton in hand for the start. He quickly established a lead, and pushed to an impressive 3:07.7 opening 1200. It was a lead they never relinquished on the way to a 10:40.31 win. The Central Bucks West girls put in some great performances. Senior Liz Kearins anchored the DMR to a win with a 12:55.20. She also came back to front-run to a 2:16.06 800 win. Kearins also anchored their 4x400 to victory in 4:00.85, splitting 58.6. In the field, CB West's Justine Robertson earned Field Athlete of the Meet with wins in the shot put (37-02), and discus (119-11). She also placed 3rd in the javelin, throwing 112-07. Northampton's Laura Rycek unleashed a 136-03 throw on the first toss of the finals to secure the javelin title. Sharing Field Athlete of the Meet honors with Robertson was Wissahickon's Folarin Ijelu, who leapt 46-07.50 in the triple jump, and cleared 6-02 to take the high jump. Hatboro-Horsham's Christy Ohmott set a meet record of 11-06 in the pole vault. Palisades held the 1ST PIRATE INVITATIONAL, where Council Rock South sprinter Ije Iheoma swept the 1/4 lap, half-lap and full lap events in 12.44, 25.48, and 58.21. South also took the 4x100. Her 200 was in the prelims. Alyson Brokaw won the 100 hurdles in 16.24 (faster in the prelims), and 49.90 for the 300 hurdles. Wilson Area's (Easton), Anthony Davidson won the 200 in 23.19 and the 400 in 51.40. Grant Broach of Palisades was a double champ, taking the discus with a throw of 137-02, and the javelin with his toss of 148-09. The jav area at Mansion Park in Altoona, site of the IGLOO INVITATIONAL, is as flat as they come. But for whatever reason (probably the talent involved), a lot of athletes throw very well there. At the site of her first PA all-time best, Westmont Hilltop senior Karlee McQuillen started with a bang, ripping a meet record throw of 157-03. And United junior Eric Skedel also claimed a meet record, going 203-10, setting a PR by over 16 feet. Leaping onto the jumping scene is Altoona sophomore Bethany Lender. She won the triple jump in a strong 37-00.75, and the long jump in 16-10. The Central Cambria distance crew was busy - winning. Carly Seymour took the 1600 in 5:07.48 and the 3200 in a very quick 10:47.13. Kelsey Seymour went 2:23.18 for the win in the 800. The Altoona sprinters wrapped up wins in the 4x100 in 43.50 and the 4x400 in 3:27.80. One of their best, AJ Alexander, swept the 100 and 200, going 10.87 and 22.44. At the CENTRAL LEAGUE RELAYS, the Upper Darby girls posted a quick 49.4 4x100, and also took the 4x200 in 1:46.8. The Penncrest boys ran 1;31.9 for their 4x200 win and 3:26.3 in the 4x400. Penncrest junior Karen Shump contributed to relay wins in her two events... the shot put with a throw of 43-08, and the discus, going 140-05. Conestoga's Chris Roe threw 168-04 for the top javelin throw of the day. Strath Haven's boys won the 4x100 in 43.4, the 1600 sprint medley in 3:44.8 and the distance medley relay in 10:39.3. At the DIAMOND STATE RELAYS in Delaware, Coatesville put out two distance medley relay squads and placed 1st and 4th. Coatesville also took 2nd in the 4x400. Glen Mill's Reuben Aimes took 1st in the long jump, while teammate Darren Johnson took top honors in the triple jump. Cardinal O'Hara's Brigid Harron won the high jump. Coatesville's Kaleena Gray won the shot put and was 2nd in the discus. Chester's Shaniel Chambers was 2nd in the triple jump. The Chester girls were 2nd in the 4x400. At the OXENREIDER RELAYS at Muhlenberg HS, North Penn came south after their trip north with quite a few awards. The girls won the 4x100 in 50.70, the 4x200 in 1:49.44, the 4x400 in 4:08.39, the 800 sprint medley relay in 1:53.07, and the distance medley relay in 12:55.86. The guys won the 4x100 in 44.20, the 4x200 in 1:33.79, and the 4x400 in 3:27.71. North Penn's Kaitlyn Dugan leapt 17-03 for the long jump title. Whitehall's Andrew Fahringer opened his season with a strong 187-03 javelin, and a 51-09.25 shot put. At the TSTCA CHAMPIONSHIPS at West Mifflin, Woodland Hills' Cambrya Jones swept the 100 and 200, going 12.51 an 25.84. Kelly Langhans of North Allegheny set a meet record of 57.81 in the 400. Kacey Gibson, Neshannock, set a meet (and state) best in the 1600 in 5:05.24. Sophomore TJ Hobart of Baldwin beat Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Scott Van Kooten in the 1600, going 4:15.85 to Van Kooten's 4:19.45. Meet records were also set by McDowell's Brice Myers in the 100 hurdles in 14.55, by Penn Hills in the 4x100 in 49.89, and by North Allegheny in the 4x400 in 4:04.96. West Banks, Hempfield, won the shot put with a throw of 59-02.50, and the discus in 163-05. Sean Gil of North Allegheny and Zach Meverden of Pine Richland each cleared 15-00 in the pole vault. Gil got the title on misses. Both meet records in the 400 were rewritten at the BROTHER JEROME BENWAY INVITATIONAL @ St. Basil Academy. Swenson's Shanae Bailey ran 57.8 to set the girls', while John Kennedy of Central posted a quick 49.2 for the boys' mark. Bailey also helped Swenson set a met record in the 4x100, where the new standard is 49.7. The Neumann-Goretti boys ran 44.0 for a meet record in the single lap relay. Girls' High of Philadelphia posted a 1:45.9 for the new meet record in the 4x200. Goretti also erased the meet record in the 4x200, going 1:30.4. A record also dropped in the 4x400... with Girard College running 3:30.6. The Archbishop Prendergast squad ran clear of 2nd in setting a record at 12:51.3 in the DMR. The field was not spared the record barrage, as Colleen Costmen of Prendie cleared 5-03, and Tom Beasley of Phoenixville cleared 6-06 in the high jump. Chestnut Hill Academy's Phil Thomas leapt 21-07.50 in the long jump. And his teammate, Wayne Crawford, threw 55-01.50 in the shot put – both meet records. Let the District 3 distance wars begin again. Senior Lara Crofford had an incredible XC season, and she is carrying over that strength after running well in a few open meets during indoor. Her 10:57.6 3200 at the HAROLD PHILLIPS INVITATIONAL @ Carlisle HS, is a strong statement for this time of year, as she pulled away from Boiling Springs junior Kara Millhouse over the final few laps, who was 2nd in 11:21.5. Crofford ran 33 seconds faster than this meet a year ago, while Millhouse was 17 seconds better. Millhouse turned the tables in the 1600, winning in a time of 5:13.0, faster than her effort in this meet in 2006. Carlisle's Maria Lamparter was 2nd, and Crofford was 3rd, both within a few seconds. Carlisle's Kacey James must love the home throwing areas, because she was strong in all three events, putting the shot 37-08, tossing the disc 116-04, and hurling the jav 122-05. Crofford's teammate Amanda Raudabaugh had a strong double, winning the 400 in 1:01.3 and the 800 in 2:23.6. There were four other double champs as well. Harrisburg came and conquered all the sprint relays at the TIM COOK MEMORIAL INVIATIONAL in Chambersburg. But Chambersburg defended their home turf nicely in the girls 100 and the distance events. The Cougar's not only won the girls and boys 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400, they set meet records in all six races. The numbers show they are primed coming off a strong indoor campaign – 51.2 and 43.4 – 1:49.5 and 1:29.7 – and 4:09.1 and 3:28.1. Chamberburg swept the 4x800's in meet record form. Chamberburg sophomore sprinter Anyssa Barbour cruised to a meet record in the 100. Harrisburg's Lhayana Dallas set two meet records in the hurdles. She also cleared 5-02 to take the high jump. James Buchanan's Dian Lehman set stadium and meet records with his 22-10 long jump. Harrisburg's Tausha Ellison leapt 17-0 to establish the girls' LJ mark. And welcome back to Chamberburg's Sarah Morrison. The William & Mary signee is back from illness and injury and looks ready to roll after a 5:18.4 meet record in the 1600. Trinity (Camp Hill) swept the small school girls and boys team titles at the WHITE ROSE INVITATIONAL at Central York. The girls title is notable because they beat more-often-than-not-state champs Milton Hershey by four points. The Trinity boys were led by two wins in the relays, taking the 4x100 in 45.1 and the 4x400 in 3:28.9. Shane Seymore contributed valuable points to the Shamrocks with his 1:59.6 win in the 800, while Chris Kearney went 50.9 in the 400. West York's Tyler Real won the 110 hurdles in 15.1 and the 300 hurdles in 41.2. In large school girls, it was New Oxford being paced by Jordan Jenkins who won the 1600 in 5:14.3 and helped the 4x800 set a meet record of 10:04.5. The large school boys team title was captured by Central Dauphin East behind a 44.7 4x100, the best on the day. Red Lion's Greg Kareis took the 3200 in a quick 9:40.7. Red Land's Lindsay Bumbernick leapt 36-04.50 to take the triple jump. At the BALD EAGLE AREA RELAYS, Amanda Mondack of the host team threw 36-03.25 to win the shot put. Jersey Shore swept most of the events in both boys and girls competition.

Krais is even stronger this year, than last.
And she has two big-time meet records as proof.

The two records that Krais took down on the relatively calm, but generally cloudy and cool day, were held by former mid-90's stars from Simon Gratz and William Penn. The first to fall was the 14.43 100 hurdles set by Gratz's Joyce Bates in 1996. Krais went 14.25 in the prelims! For good measure, she ran 14.46 in the finals.

In between the prelims and finals, Krais ran the event that many think is one of her best, the 300 hurdles. With a minor blip on one early hurdle and one late one, Krais looked smooth and powerful through the finish, coming home in a meet record 42.33, breaking the 14.47 mark by William Penn's Angel Patterson from 1995. It is her 3rd best ever, and over two seconds better than she began the 2006 outdoor season.

This is pretty early in the season for a time like that, and Krais credits the new, longer, tougher and strength-building workouts from the winter that included 500's and 600's to go with her increased weight training. A typical workout included a timed 400 in "about a minute on a good day", with the final 100 "with everything I had left." Krais sometimes did four repeats to go with 100's on the same day.

Those workouts apparently have helped her short speed as well, because she split an amazing 11.0 on the anchor of the 4x100 to bring her team into 3rd behind Central Bucks East (50.35) and William Tennent (50.82). For good measure, Krais finished the day with a 55.3 split in the 4x400, again moving her team up, this time to 2nd in 4:05.86 behind the strong Central Bucks West run of 4:00.85.

The typically self-effacing Krais always quick to point out the outside influences that help her in both her training and performance. For the 300, it was Tennent's Kayla Hennessy... "When I know she is in my race, the adrenaline just goes up. I have to give credit to her for a time like that."

For the 11.0 split... "When you come from behind in a race, it's always a little extra boost."

And for the times when the the 500's and 600's are more painful than your body is willing to accept... "My teammates are there. They always motivate me."

Krais has a trip planned to the Taco Bell Classic in South Carolina in mid-April as a hoped-for competitive tune-up for the 400 hurdles at the Penn Relays. She's working to get her 15-step rhythm to include more than half the race, and with a 100m+ effort on Saturday, appears well on her way.

Bing went into track to help his prospects in Divison 1 football.

Now he's a prospect in both.

Brandon Bing exudes confidence.

Notice I didn't say 'displays' confidence. There is a huge difference.

Bing (in PTXC photo) lets his performances speak for themselves, whether they're on the track, in the field events (more on that in a minute), or on another kind of field, that 100-yard one that's such a big hit every fall.

Bing actually added outdoor track to his resume as a sophomore to help his football. Well, with a US#2 indoor 200 time of 21.52 during his first-ever under-the-roof season, he is now on the radar for both. "Some of the teams who were recruiting me for football have come back for track. That works out well because I can talk to both at once."

A tweaked hamstring at the end of indoor that he was still nursing at Nike Indoor is on the mend thanks to help from expert trainers from a national group. As a little protection, Bing did not run the 4x100 or the 4x400 on Saturday, concentrating instead on the 100 and 200 double, both of which had single rounds of prelims.

And despite recovering from the flu earlier in the week, he looked pretty healthy. In the morning session, a 10.97 in the prelims was followed by a 22.69 qualifier in the 200.

He was just getting warmed up.

His goals this season include erasing his PRs. Well, the 100 PR of 10.89 set at last year's outdoor District 1 meet is gone. He ran 10.85 in the finals.

His 22.03 in the 200 finals is his best in outdoor, although his two sub-22's during indoor will surely fall sometime soon.

But Bing has another event in mind for outdoor where he'd like to try his feet... the triple jump. In 2006 he leapt 46-6 in his only competition ever. "I'd like to do the triple jump at the Penn Relays and see what I can do."  While at Penn, he'd also like to eclipse his 49.1 split in the 4x400.

As for States, Bing says the 200 is his favorite, but he is also looking to make his mark in the triple jump, in what is usually a very competitive event at Shippensburg.

After a couple of more college visits, he hopes to make a decision on schools. But wherever he goes, he is looking to major in either business management or sports & entertainment marketing.

"It's good to have something in case this football and track thing doesn't work out."

If his recent times are any indication, Bing may have to wait quite a while for his business career to begin.

There were impressive marks at every turn, circle and runway, as well.

Wissahickon did a little switching in the opening event of the day, the Distance Medley Relay. Usually anchored by Nick Crits, the junior took the baton in hand for the start. He quickly established a lead, and pushed to an impressive 3:07.7 opening 1200. It was a lead they never relinquished on the way to a 10:40.31 win behind a 54.0 400 by Morgan Hill, a 2:03.4 800 by Teddy Miller, and a 4:34.7 mile anchor by Scott Kern. Crits also came back to run a winning 4:21.35 in the 1600. 2nd in that race was Pennridge's Isaac Bryan in 4:25.95. Bryan doubled back later in the meet to win the 3200 in 9:40.51. The Central Bucks West girls put in some great performances. Senior Liz Kearins anchored the DMR to a win with a 12:55.20 with a 5:19 mile. She also came back to front-run to a 2:16.06 800 win. Kearins also anchored their 4x400 to victory in 4:00.85, splitting 58.6. In the field, CB West's Justine Robertson (in PTXC photo above competing in shot put) earned Field Athlete of the Meet with wins in the shot put (37-02), and discus (119-11). She also placed 3rd in the javelin, throwing 112-07 (She should also get props for running as she competed in all shot and jav at the same time, followed very quickly by the discus). Northampton's Laura Rycek unleashed a 136-03 throw on the first toss of the finals to secure the javelin title. Sharing Field Athlete of the Meet honors with Robertson was Wissahickon's Folarin Ijelu (in PTXC photo above), who leapt 46-07.50 in the triple jump, and cleared 6-02 to take the high jump as well. Shaniya Richardson of Simon Gratz pulled off the 100-200 double, going 12.60 and 26.40. She posted a 26.22 in the prelims of the 200. Hatboro-Horsham's Christy Ohmott set a meet record of 11-06 in the pole vault, eclipsing the 11-03 of Bishop Shanahan's Caitlin Fairbairn, set last year.

3/31 Altoona Igloo Invitational @ Mansion Park

The jav area at Mansion Park in Altoona is as flat as they come. In fact, a line of trees to the thrower's right can bother some. But for whatever reason (probably the talent involved), a lot of athletes throw very well there. And the first meet of year for 2007 was no exception. At the site of her first PA all-time best, Westmont Hilltop senior Karlee McQuillen started with a bang, ripping a meet record throw of 157-03. And United junior Eric Skedel also claimed a meet record, going 203-10, setting a PR by over 16 feet. The good news for fans is, PA is rich in Jav talent, so this is an indicator of some great competition to come. And their 4x800 ran 10:18.62. Westmont Hilltop distance runner Travis Dean won the 160 in 4:20.81 and the 3200 in 9:56.57. The Altoona sprinters wrapped up wins in the 4x100 in 43.50 and the 4x400 in 3:27.80. One of their best, AJ Alexander, swept the 100 and 200, going 10.87 and 22.44. Teammate Adam Kennedy went 50.60 in the 400.

Coatesville put out two distance medley relay squads and placed 1st and 4th. (Sorry guys, but our database only takes one elite performance per event-per meet). But for the record, they ran 10:32.74 and 11:06.09. Coatesville also took 2nd in the 4x400 in 3:24.82. Glen Mill's Reuben Aimes took 1st in the long jump with a leap of 21-05.75, while teammate Darren Johnson took top honors in the triple jump at 43-05. Cardinal O'Hara's Brigid Harron cleared 5-02 for the high jump championship. Coatesville's Kaleena Gray won the shot put with a throw of 41-09, and was 2nd in the discus, going 125-02. Let the District 3 distance wars begin again. Senior Lara Crofford had an incredible XC season, and she is carrying over that strength after running well in a few open meets during indoor. Her 10:57.6 3200 is a strong statement for this time of year, as she pulled away from Boiling Springs junior Kara Millhouse over the final few laps, who was 2nd in 11:21.5. Other double champs included Aaron Whetstone, Carlisle, in the long and triple jumps; Tim Aru of Mechanicsburg in the 100 and 200; Jonathan Jackson of Carlisle in the 110 and 300 hurdles; and Anna Bixler of Cumberland Valley in the hurdles as well.

Harrisburg came and conquered all the sprint relays. Chamberburg swept the 4x800's in meet record form, going 9:54.9 and 8:14.0. Chamberburg sophomore sprinter Anyssa Barbour cruised to a 12.1 meet record in the 100. Harrisburg's Lhayana Dallas set two meet records, going 14.8 in the 100 hurdles and 45.7 in 300 hurdles.

3/31 OUTDOOR WEEK #2 PREVIEW:

The 23rd Pennsylvania Track Classic headlines the first big weekend of outdoor. The meet moved temporarily from Plymouth-Whitemarsh to Great Valley this year because of construction, but the results should be the same - smokin'. Especially with 60 degree sunny weather in the forecast. PennTrackXC.com will be there soakin' in the rays and the competition. Those of you going to the meet, (or any meet for that matter)... always fell free to bug me to make sure I don't miss any top performances. It's tough to be in five places at once, but I try. The TSTCA Championships is also on the bill, at the always-fast West Mifflin track. Several other classic meets dot the PA map, including one with Ice and one with igloo in their names. Hopefully they'll have nice spring weather as well.
