4/14 OUTDOOR WEEK #4 SUMMARY:

Highlighting the weekend... At the TACO BELL CLASSIC in South Carolina, Methacton's Ryann Krais set a MR and a PR with her 59.34 win in the 400 hurdles. Race story and links to a video interview and race photo gallery by SCRunner's John Olsen are below. Conditions were better for distance than sprints at the 7TH HURRICANE CLASSIC, but at least there was no rain, snow, or wind. With Penn Relays 4x800 berths on the line, the 4x800 shaped up to be a fast one (Gwynedd Mercy already had a spot, but anchor Taylor Bumpas still ran for the win. She anchored the winning 4x400 as well - photo by PTXC). A meet and track record fell. In addition to the 4x800, the 1600 and 3200 records were bettered. Two field marks were also reset. Rustin shot putter Alanna Owens, a junior, has learned something new this year that is helping her deal with the pressure of nailing at least one of six throws each week against some of the best people in the state and the country. "Just compete" and everything else will take care of itself. She has learned her lesson well. And considering the cold, the sprinters and jumpers did pretty well. Breehana Jacobs of Laurel Highlands is running well for the bad western PA weather. She was named track athlete of the meet at the 16TH LADY SPARTAN INV @ Hempfield Area (D7). Jacobs has a rather quick teammate pushing her this season. Hometown thrower Kim Kanala was the meet's outstanding field athlete with wins in the discus and shot. Diana Filtz of Penn Trafford showed some wheels and strength in taking the 800 and 1600. Kiski Area's Leah Ulizio put the jav out there.

Harrisburg is good this year. Guys and the girls. In one of the largest teams the school has ever had, they have scorers and they have depth. The girls dominated the 19th PAN-RAM INV., tallying 121 points. Cedar Cliff was 2nd with 68 points, and AA upstart Boiling Springs was 3rd with 61. Lhayana Dallas led the Cougars with wins in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and the high jump. For the boys, Harrisburg would finish 3rd behind Cumberland Valley and Central Dauphin, all within 10 points. Boiling Springs was led by distance star Kara Millhouse, who doubled-dipped with four-lap and an eight-lap wins. Teammate Anna Bixler scored in three events. Running a quick 800 is tough enough with help. But when Central Dauphin's Andrew Rotz (in photo by John Gayman) laid down a meet record in a solo sub 1:54, he showed the rest of PA his fitness level is right where he wants it to be. Daniel Boone's Aubrie McAlpine won the 100 and 200. Cumberland Valley sprinter Juan Steward pulled the 100 and 400 double. Lower Dauphin hurdler Eric Oneal swept his two events. In the field, Central Dauphin's Justin Shirk set a meet record in the javelin; and Anna Muzio of Central Dauphin won the shot put and discus. The Selinsgrove girls swept three relays at the 27TH PURPLE & WHITE RELAYS @ Shamokin HS... taking the 4x100, the 4x200 and the 4x400. The Williamsport boys took the 4x100 and the 800 SMR. The javelin is a strong event in PA, and the big guns are starting to warm up, this past weekend at the 37TH ANNUAL TFCAofGP RELAY CARNIVAL. LaSalle's Brian Moore threw to the PA lead. North Penn's sub-8 4x800 says they have reloaded nicely. Abington also sent a message quick a 4x100 and 4x400. The national champ XC team Coatesvlle guys posted a very fast DMR to go with a strong 4x1600. Their sprint medley was pretty good as well. In the 'better you than me' event, Joe Berry of Hatboro-Horsham cleared 15-04. At the ARCTIC BLAST INVITATIONAL, Northern girls have a strong distance program as reflected by strong wins in the 800, 1600, 3200 and 4x800. State College sprinter Alex Kenney took the 100 and 200. The South Western boys posted a fast 4x400. At the BRISTOL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INVITATIONAL, Father Judge sprinter Mike Zampirri took care of 100 and 200 biz. He also anchored their winning 4x100. Neshaminy's Tim Bech won the 300 hurdles, and the long and the triple jumps. Three guys busted 2 in the 800, Matt Wikler and Joe Capecci, but sub-1:59, and Nate Twer of Jenkintown. At the COLTS NECK RELAYS, in New Jersey, Unionville set a school record in the DMR, taking 4th. Paul Springer led off in 3:02.1 1200, passing Colts Neck star Craig Forys to give his team a 10-15 meter lead. West Chester Henderson's girls were 2nd in the DMR. The boys' half of the Wildcat-Spartan meets held the evening before the girls compete at Greensburg, featured some big throws by Hempfield's Weston Banks. On Friday at the 5TH GREATER LATROBE INVITATIONAL, and coming off his indoor state title in the shot put, Hempfield's Weston Banks has added the discus to his arsenal. Both events are showing great promise for the senior. His upped his PA#1 discus ead by over 6'. And his nearly 60' shot put was just a half-inch below his season best. Triple jumpers Garner McCloud (Kiski Area) and Dan Sandrowicz (Indiana), were over 46'. Sandrowicz also won the long jump. Greensburg Central Catholic junior Chris Hayden-Martin won the 100 and the 200. Kiski Area easily captured the team title, getting 10 points from their 4x100. At the BEDFORD GIANT EAGLE INVITATIONAL, Jordan Donaldson of Tussey Mountain set two meet records in the single and double lap events. Sarah Strayer of Forest Hills won three events, the 800, 1600 and 3200, the latter a meet record. Berlin's girls and Bedford's boys took team titles. At the DELCO T&F RELAY CARNIVAL, Upper Darby took two of the sprint relays, Chester captured both sprint medleys, and Archbishop Carroll, Radnor and Archbishop Prendergast split the long stuff. And it was all fast. Upper Darby's Bintou Dibba won the long and triple. Karen Shump of Penncrest had the top shot and discus performances of the day And Strath Haven won the 4x100m hurdles despite more than one and fewer than four falls. It really was the Kaitlyn Dugan show at the DON SELTZER TRACK & FIELD RELAYS @ Exeter HS. The North Penn senior not only won three events, but she posted some very strong marks, putting up the #1 long jump in the state, the #2 high jump by an inch, and the #9 triple jump. The Phonixville and North Penn girls pushed each other in the 4x100 shuttle hurdles, the 4x100 and the 4x200, with Phoenixville taking two of the three. At the HARBOR CREEK INVITATIONAL, Ogechi Nwokedi of Oil City won the 400 and 800. Strong Vincent senior LaMont McMilliams was a double champ, taking the 100 and 200. Fellow senior Amanda Seigworth took the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, while Oil City's Nick Kleng pulled off the 800-1600 double. At the HEMPFIELD BLACK KNIGHT INVITATIONAL (D3), Conestoga Valley's Vince McNally set a pair of meet records, ripping a sub-4:18 1600 and holding off Hempfield's Andrew Kontra in the 800, both under 2 minutes. Garden Spot teammates Ross Shober and Liz Martin were double champs in the 100 and 200. The home team girls set meet records in the 4x400 and 4x800. The Hempfield guys set a meet record in the 4x800 and won the 4x400. Hempfield's Christi Griffiths set two meet records and tied a 3rd, winning the long, triple and high jumps. Ashley Myer of Oxford took the shot put and the discus. Dallastown's Dylan Hoffman was sub 15 in the 110 hurdles. At the SOUTH HILLS CLASSIC @ Baldwin HS, Baldwin sophomore TJ Hobart ran another sub-4:20 for 1600 in cool, damp conditions. Hurdler Brice Myers of McDowell won the 110 and 300. Brentwood's Da'Von Moore posted a quick 100. North Allegheny thrower Jade Hambrick won two events, the shot and discus. At the TROJAN TRACK & FIELD CLASSIC, @ Center HS, Derek Moye of Rochester cruised quickly through the 200 and 400 for wins. Blackhawk's Lisa Weatherly long-jumped over 17'. Denes Veres, Riverside, was a double winner, taking the shot put and discus. Hopewell's Kailey Baker won the 100 and 200, while Monaca's Josh Nadzam captured three events, the 800, 1600 and 3200. At the PACER RELAYS, the Glen Mills guys got in some quick workouts, posting strong times in winning the shuttle hurdles, 4x100, 4x200 4x400 and 1600 sprint medley relays. The CB West 4x800 ran sub 9:56, and took the 4x400 as well. Council Rock North senior Allison Sikora held off Nazareth's Meghan Lutz in the 3200 by less than two seconds. Methacton's Ryann Krais set a MR and a PR with her 59.34 win in the 400 hurdles. It was her second time breaking the magic minute for what many consider to be the nastiest event on the track. Krais was, as always, looking for improvement after the race, but was generally very pleased with her effort, from both a technical and a timing standpoint. Technically, she was able to hold her 15-step cadence through the first half of the race – the first time she has accomplished that. Starting in lane 4, Krais took quick aim on Tierra Brown of Hampton, Virginia in lane 5. Krais more than made up the stagger early, and stayed focused until the end. "I was really happy with a time like that at this part of the season because it's where I ended last year." (59.64 at the Nike Outdoor Champs in June). Methacton coach Rob Ronzano said the race in South Carolina was important as a confidence booster for the upcoming Penn Relays in less than two weeks. Also while at Taco Bell, Krais ran 4th in the 200 in 25.09 on Saturday night (24.81 in the semis on Friday). She also cleared 5-6 for 3rd in the high jump, clearing 5-0, 5-2, 5-4 on first attempts, 5-6 on her 2nd, and had three good looks at 5-8, also on Friday.

For the first time this season, the weather actually cooperated.

Conditions were better for distance than sprints, but at least there was no rain, snow, or wind. With Penn Relays 4x800 berths on the line, the 4x800 shaped up to be a fast one. Gwynedd-Mercy, who will race in a small schools heat at Penn, took it out with Conestoga, a large school squad on the bubble. The teams raced evenly until the third leg, when Gwynedd opened a gap, and Unionville came up from the pack to join Conestoga. Both large schools were going for their best times. Gwynedd, anchored by Taylor Bumpas, cruised to a 9:28.35. Unionville anchor Marisa Guerette caught Conestoga anchor Marta Klebe, a freshman, at the line to go 9:37.07, winning by just a quarter-of-a-second.

Gwynedd-Mercy: Erin Ryan 2:18, Kelly McEldrew 2:22, Haley Keenan 2:26, Taylor Bumpas 2:20
Unionville: Tiffany Garber 2:25.8, Lyndsey Ratasiewicz 2:25.6, Christine Smith 2:23.0, Marisa Guerette 2:22.6
Conestoga: Carly Niness (jr) 2:18 (67), Meghan Shanley (so) 2:26 (67), Katherine Fenwick (sr) 2:26 (68), Marta Klebe (fr) 2:25 (67)

Don't think. Just throw.

Rustin shot putter Alanna Owens (right: in PTXC photo), a junior, has learned something new this year that is helping her deal with the pressure of nailing at least one of six throws each week against some of the best people in the state and the country. "Just compete" and everything else will take care of itself. The idea is not new to her (or any athlete who is trying to learn how to ignore the nerves). But this season, for the first time, Owens is pretty sure she gets it. Since a 36-footer halfway through indoor, Owens has been consistently over 39 feet, and mostly in the 40's. On Saturday, Owens went into the finals with the lead on long-time rival and friend Kaleena Gray of Coatesville. Gray usually picks up the pressure on her final throw, and the Hurricane Classic was no exception. Gray uncorked a 42-2 to take the lead. Up stepped Owens. – the new and more focused Owens. She went through her routine, relaxed, and just thought about the throw. It was her best ever, a 42-10, and on this day, the winner. Owens credits her dad for the constant "just compete" mantra, and her coaches for the extra work with jumps, medicine balls, and "lots of footwork" for her improvement this year. She also says both Gray and fellow junior Karen Shump are the ones who really push her to improve and to compete. Her fellow District 1 competitors will be in AA at States, while Owens, with her transfer to the new Bayard Rustin school in the West Chester district this year, is now in AA. No worries about competition though. "There's always someone in AA. "Last year (Allyn) Laughlin threw 50'. I just have to compete."

Interestingly, earlier in Saturday's competition, Owens had broken the 2005 meet and track records of 40-11 held by Kaleena's older sister Tayvon. Kaleena broke that mark on her last throw, and the record is now held by Owens. All in the Ches-Mont League. Gray added the discus win with a throw of 133-03.

In addition to the 4x800, the 1600 and 3200 records fell.

The 4x800 record of 9:29.0 had been held by Villa Maria and was set in 1999. But other VMA marks also were bettered. Former distance star Kim Malcolm held the 1600 meet and track records of 5:06.1, set in 2002. Saint Basil's Kathleen Davies took care of that with a solo 5:03.12 off a split of 2:25. In the 3200, Pennridge's Sarah Simonetti ran 11:19.71 to better another Malcolm record – this one a 2002 11:24.7. The meet record had been held by Unionville's Katie Thaeder, who ran 11:26.46 in 2005. The only other meet and stadium record to be bettered was in the pole vault as Christy Ohmott of Hatboro-Horsham cleared 11-0, establishing the new mark by a foot.

The sprinters weathered the cold well. Swenson's Shanae Bailey took both the 100 and 200, going 12.54 and 25.09. Teammate Anthonia "Mouse" Ballard ran 16.30 to win the 100 hurdles, and 46.57 to take the 300 hurdles. Swenson's 4x100 went 50.46 to beat Great Valley (50.84) and Paul Robeson (50.93). Gwynedd-Mercy posted a quick 4x400 to go with their 4x800 win, clocking in at 4:02.65. Kristen Arnold of Downingtown West long-jumped 17-04, to edge Saqenda Dallas of Girls' High by a quarter-of-an-inch. Arnold also captured 2nd in the 100, running 12.64.
