Parkland girls won a very close race with Hatboro-Horsham, winning by 2 points, 114-116. Elizabeth Simpson, Boyertown, won the individual race in 20:07.7, and Carolyn Morse, Great Valley, was 2nd in 20:18. Hatboro-Horsham boys also had to settle for 2nd, scoring 81 points to Holy Ghost Prep's 56 points. Mark Dennin pulled out another impressive victory this week, winning in 16:15.9. Second place went to Michael Pierce, Holy Ghost Prep, in 16:58.

Uniontown won the girls team competition with 37 points to best Waynesburg Central by 15 points. Erika Coffey, Brownsville Area, won the individual competition by56 seconds in a time of 20:12.60. Uniontown boys put on an impressive display of strength, winning with 29 points and putting all 5 scoring runners in the top 9 places. Washington high school was 2nd with 83 points. Brownsville Area's Cameron Coffey won the boys race in 18:23.10.

9/8 4 x XC Relay

For many of the over two dozen Philadelphia area high school cross country teams, the inaugural 4 x XC Relay Meet offered an opportunity to open up their 2007 seasons. The race, a four person relay with each runner covering two miles, was run on a tough course with haybales to hurdle in hot and humid conditions at the famed Belmont Plateau.
Germantown Friends, the state’s second ranked team, walked away with the boys relay title in winning time of 43:40. After the first two legs La Salle College High School and Germantown Friends were battling away at the front of the twenty-eight team field. However, Germantown Friends’ Issac Ortiz blew the race wide open with a speedy third leg and handed the baton off to teammate Max Kaulbach, who was never tested. La Salle, in second place and
West Chester Henderson in third, rounded out the top three teams.
It took the girls race longer to unfold before West Chester Henderson emerged out on top in a winning time of 53:51 over the challenging course. West Chester Henderson was behind Downingtown East for a great deal of the race. Downington East held on for second place and Upper Dublin claimed third in the twenty-six team field.

In the girls race Council Rock North won the Division I section with 43 points, over William Tennent, 68 points. The Division II section was won by Christopher Dock with 156 points. Individually Meaghan Lutz, Nazareth, won in 17:19. Karrie Finn, Council Rock North, was 2nd in 17:32. In the boys competition Penncrest continues to look good, winning Division I with 28 points over Neshaminy, 75 points. Holy Ghost Prep won the Division II competition with 135 points. Individually, Nick Bonaventure, Penncrest, won in 15:01 and A.J. Bell, Penncrest, was 2nd in 15:12.

In the girls race Strath Haven beat O'hara 52-61, however, O'hara's number 1 girl did not race. Spring-Ford's Heather Giovagnoli won in a time of 18:59. In the boys race Haverford scored 42 points to beat Wissahickon by 25 points. Haverford's compression was 1:04. Wissahickon's Nick Crits won in 15:48, and Ken Keehn of Haverford was 2nd in 15:56.

the Eagles to the team win @ Gettysburg.

Union City dominated the girls White Division, scoring 41 points to win by 84 points over Cranberry. Individually, Kacey Gibson, Neshannock, won by 1:03 in 18:40. In the girls Red Division Fort Lebeouf won with 54 points and Bethany Walker, Ellwood City, took individual honors in 19:52. In the boys White Division West Middlesex won with 32 points, 89 point better than Union City. Adam Shrawder, West Middlesex, won in a time of 17:04. In the boys Red Division North East won the team battle with 28 points, 55 points up on Quaker Valley. Johnathon McElwain, Riverside, won in 16:31 and Garrett Gray, Northeast, was 2nd in 16:39.
9/8 Central Bucks East Invitational

In the girls race it was a battle between Unionville and Perkiomen Valley up front with Unionville coming out on top 31-40. Christine Smith, Unionville, dominated this race, running a time of 19:05 to win by 1:05. Carly Yost of North Penn was 2nd in 20:10. On the boys side North Penn put 6 runners inside the top 12 to post a score of 33, beating CB West by 34 points. Individually, Tyler Jones, CB West, took first with a time of 15:40 and Zach Hoagland, North Penn, was second with a 15:53. On a side note, Josh Izewski, CB East, did not race this weekend, but will return next Saturday. North Penn's Zach Montijo did not race as well. Also, Kate Ross, CB East, was out due to an injury, but hopes to return by the 9/22 weekend if not sooner.

For the girls, Forest Hills took the first two individual places, yet they fell to Bishop McCort by a score of 45-61. Sarah Strayer and Leah Anne Wirfel were 1st and 2nd for Forest Hills with times of 19:05 and 19:14. For the boys, St. Mary's and Bishop McCort were back and forth the whole race, with St. Mary's coming out on top 118-119. Individually, Bishop McCort junior Jim Spisak took top honors, running 16:37 for a 25 second margin of victory.
Vince McNally ran 15:20 to win by nearly a minute.

The weather was muggy and the racing was hot at this years edition of the Gettysburg XC Invitational. In the girls group 1 team competition a very strong Northern squad took the win behind the 2-7-9 finish from Rachel Wong, Katie Meck, and Abby Wong. In the individual race senior Kara Millhouse rolled to victory in 18:42.37. Reports from the field indicate that Kara ran relaxed for most of the race, then sprinted to victory in the last 70 meters. In girls group 2 action Gettysburg won the team title with 124 points. Emily Ballantyne won the individual title in 19:43.55. In girls group 3 action Elk Lake won the team title with 43 points. Rachel Owens, Elk Lake, won individually in a time of 20:18.37. For the boys group 1, Cumberland Valley displayed team strengh, putting all 5 scoring runners in the top 22 places to score 48 points and take victory. In the individual race senior Vince McNally put on quite a show, running away from the pack at 1.5 miles to win by 54 seconds in 15:20.32. In boys group 2 action Francis Scott Key won the team title with 104 points. Individually, Arthur Leathers, Francis Scott Key, won in 16:39.50. Dallastown's Tim Moyer was 2nd in 16:52.43. In boys group 3 action Elk Lake took the win with 72 points. Trinity was 2nd with 76, and Devon Prep was 3rd with 84 points. David Evans, Devon Prep, won the individual title with a 16:46.43 and Eastern York's James Mcbride was 3rd with a 16:56.13.

In the girls race York Suburban posted an impressive win, scoring 31 points to defeat Warwick by 37 points. Individually, York Suburban's Molly Smith won with a time of 20:48.45. Warwick's Kaitlyn Oliver was 2nd in 21:24.37. In the boys race St. Joseph Prep dominated the field, putting their 5 runners in 1-2-4-5-6 to score 18 points and win by 62 points over York Suburban. Mark Springel, St. Joseph Prep, and teammate Tom Iannacone were 1st and 2nd in 17:18.85 and 17:30.44.

9/8 Red, White & Blue Classic

This years Red, White, and Blue Classic boasted 54 teams and 1539 individual runners turning up dirt on the Schenley Oval cross country course. In the girls 'A' race Greater Latrobe squeaked by North Allegheny for a 125 to 127 win. Greater Latrobe was strong up front with a 1-6 finish, however, North Allegheny was able to get close with their impressive 46 second spread. In the individual race Greater Latrobe junior Natalie Bower ran to a time of 18:27 and an 11 second win over Fox Chapel senior Rachel Humphrey. The boys 'A' race was a little less dramatic with North Allegheny placing 5 runners in the top 21 to take a 58-106 victory over Mount Lebanon. North Allegheny affirmed their ranking and showed that they are ready to race this fall. Individually, Baldwin senior David Adley makes an impressive statement with a 16 second margin of victory, running a time of 15:54.

Weekend Preview:
Week 2 of the 2007 cross country season welcomes the return of two meets that have continued to grow... the Gettysburg Invitational and the Red, White & Blue Classic in Pittsburgh. Teams from Virginia, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia will join the Pennsylvania harriers in Gettysburg. The meet is the season debut for Conestoga Valley's Vince McNally. Girl's 2006 champ Sydney Clark of Hempfield is also back for her senior campaign. At the Schenley Oval in Pittsburgh, PA#1 North Allegheny makes their team debut. Plus, there will be great competition in all parts of the state with a total of 12 high school meets.
