At the US Olympic Trials: Sunday July 6: Lauryn Williams finished 4th in the 200 finals by a mere .01. John Hetzendorf (Warrior Run 1995) was 8th in the javelin finals on a throw of 230-09.

At the US Olympic Trials: Saturday July 5: Lauren Williams (Right in photo by Victor Sailor, PhotoRun.net) advanced from the quarterfinals of the 200 the semis, running 23.12, and then to Sunday's finals, going 22.59. And Hyleas Fountain withdrew from the 100 hurdles, obviously focusing on the heptathlon.

At the US Olympic Trials: Friday July 4: John Hetzendorf (Warrior Run HS, 1995), advanced the finals of the javelin with the 6th best throw of 243-05. Frances Koons (Allentown Central Catholic 2004) was 8th in her heat of the women's 1500m semifinal, running 4:17.41. Lauryn Williams (Rochester 2001) moved into the semifinals in the 200 to go with her 100 Olympic team berth. Maureen McCandless (Nazareth Academy 2001) was 12th in the 5000m finals, running 15:54.50. James Carney (Millersville University), was 6th in the men's 10,000m, timed in 27:58.81. And Sheena Gordon (McDowell 2001), captured 5th in the high jump final, clearin 6-2.26.

At the US Olympic Trials: Thursday July 3: 2004 Allentown Central Catholic grad Frances Koons advanced from Thursday's 1500m quarterfinals to Friday's semifinal, running 4:17.86. After winning the heptathlon last week, Hyleas Fountain took 4th in the long jump at 21-11.75. Ryan Fritz (Octorara 2005) was a NH in his first Trials experience in the high jump; and Daniel Austin (Cumberland Valley 2001), threw 174-3 and did not advance in the discus.

The USATF Region II Champs are underway at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

At the US Olympic Trials: Sunday-Monday June 29-30: 2001 Nazareth Academy grad Maureen McCandless (Photo by Victor Sailor, PhotoRun.net) advanced to the 5000m finals with here 15:36.52, running 2nd in the same heat with American record-holder Shalane Flanagan. Kane's Amy Rudolph did not start. In the high jump qualifying, 2001 McDowell grad Sheena Gordon advanced to the finals. Hyleas Fountain kept up her incredible trials by moving on in the long jump. In the javelin finals, 2004 Williamsport grad Ruby Radocaj and 2005 Northern York grad Amy Backel finished 9th and 10th, respectively. 2006 West Catholic grad Latavia Thomas finished 11th in the 800 final. Thomas had advanced to the finals of the 800 Monday after being involved in a fall during the semis. The four women in that fall all moved on. That story as reported by LetsRun.com. William Penn (Philly) grad Shakeema (Walker) Welsch, (in photo by Victor Sailor, PhotoRun.net) finished 2nd in the triple jump with a 46-10 leap, but because the 3rd place finisher had already achieved the A standard, and Welsch's jump was a wind-aided A, she will not be making the trip to Beijing. the Two-woman team story from USATF. 1996 Carlisle HS grad Chris Boyles begins his decathlon competition. After one event, the 100m, he is in 15th, running an 11.30 for 795 points. He was in 20th after three events after three fouls in the long jump, then took a 6th place 47-09.75 in the shot put. He then scratched the 400 and is a DNF.

At the US Olympic Trials - Friday-Saturday June 27-28: 2000 Central Dauphin East grad Hyleas Fountain (In photo with the US Heptathlon team, by Victor Sailor, PhotoRun.net) started with three records in the 100 hurdles, setting three records with a 12.65 in the 100. Fountain dominated the field by 320 points, totaling 6667. On day one, she was 3rd in the high jump, clearing 5-11.25, tops in the shot put at 44-10.25, and 1st in the 200 with her 23.31. From USATF: "After a personal-best day one, Fountain on Saturday continued the finest heptathlon competition of her career, becoming the #3 American woman of all time with her 2008 world-leading point total of 6,667. She started her day with yet another personal best in the long jump. Her mark of 6.88m/22-7 (1.6mps wind, 1132 points) was her fourth personal best out of five events contested to that point, and was the third-best mark long jump by an American this year. She was just as sharp in the javelin, throwing a personal-best 48.15m/158-0 (824 points). She finished out the competition with a time of 2:27.69 (722 points) in the 800. Over two days, she won five of seven events and posted five event personal bests as well as her overall personal-best score." Having survived the quarterfinals on Friday in the 800. Latavia Thomas did not advance to the finals. Dominique Darden did not advance to the finals of the 400 hurdles, running 56.54. Also on Saturday, wo PA athletes advanced to the finals of the javelin. Wiliamsport grad Ruby Radocaj threw 175-9 and Northern York grad Amy Backel went 170-10. Rising junior Fawn Miller of Lakeview threw 154-5, missing advancing by less than five feet. Friday: In a major surprise, Easton's Chanelle Price (Photo by Victor Sailor, PhotoRun.net) did not advance from the quarterfinals, running 2:05.93 after fading to 6th in her heat after running 4th much of the race. She went through the 400 in 60.2 and tripped several times in the first 200m. "I should have gotten back up and did what I had to do. I wasn't used to the lanes, and it was just a bad race. I'm feeling a little disappointed right now, that's a lot of hard work." Price said.

2006 West Catholic grad Latavia Thomas advanced, taking 2nd in her heat in 2:03.90. Ryan Whiting, a 2005 Central Dauphin grad, advanced to the final of the shot put with the 4th best throw of 66-07. 2001 Rochester grad Lauryn Wiliams ran 11.03 to advance to the quarterfinal in the 100 and then 10.86 to move on to the semifinals. McDowell grad Sheena Gordon leapt 44-00.50 in the triple jump and missed advancing to the finals by just two inches. In the 400 hurdles, 2002 Harrisburg grad Dominique Darden advanced to the semifinals with a 56.55. Ryann Krais ran 59.39 (In photo by Victor Sailor. www. photorun.net), and 5th seed Nicole Leach, a 2005 West Catholic grad, ran 1:00.90 after clipping the last hurdle and going down hard. 2001 Hershey grad Brian Mondschein did not advance from the pole vault qualifier, clearing 17-8.50.

From USATF: Hyleas Fountain's time of 12.65 in the women's heptathlon 100m hurdles, worth 1,178 points on scoring tables, broke three records Friday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field. Her time broke the following HEPTATHLON records:

- American record, heptathlon 100m hurdles (12.69, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, 1988, Seoul)

- Olympic Trials record, heptathlon 100m hurdles (12.71, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, 1988, Indianapolis)

- USA National Championship record, heptathlon 100m hurdles (12.77, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, 1991, NYC)

At the AAU Region II Champs in Chester: Fri-Sun: - Rising junior Carlton Lavong, Methacton, posted a PA#1 US#25 long jump of 24-1.25, and leapt 45-2.50 to win the triple jump. Older bro Wesley threw the shot 54-8.75. (photos to left) Gwynedd-Mercy's Taylor Bumpas ran 2:15.14 in the 800. Alysha Cook, Harrisburg, won two events, the YW 100 hurdles in 14.82 (14.27p) and the 400 hurdles. Imhotep grad Herman Kirkland went 10.96 in the YM 100.

Ayanna Fields, (in photo) Academy of Notre Dame, took the IG 400 in 56.94. Prendie's Arielle Fonrose ran 56.35 to take the YW 400. Shannon Daniels, Central Bucks East, leapt 17-10.25 to capture the IG long jump. And AJ's Elite of Chester ran 9:37.11 to win the YW 4x800.

At the USATF Youth Nationals in Charlotte, NC: Sunday: - Terence Lee won his 2nd individual title, taking the YM 1500 in 3:59.90. The Mt. Airy TerenceTC, anchored by Shanae Bailey, went 3:45.23 to wn the IG 4x100. Earlier in the day, Bailey followed up her 200 win with a 3rd place 12.15 in the IG 100. Jermaine and Jerome Lowery went 3-4 in the YM 400 hurdles in 52.77 and 53.86, respectively. The Lowerys then contributed to the 4x400 3rd place effort of Sigma International with their 3:16.59. Taylor Ellis-Watson was 5th in the IG 400 in 56.08.
- Saturday Youth Highlights:
Saturday: Rising Swenson junior Shanae Bailey won the IG 200 in a PR and PA#1 23.99. She also anchored her Mt. Airy TC to 3rd in the 4x100 at 47.28. Jenna Arnold wins YW 3000 in 10:36.32. Lamont Fowler, Conrad Weiser, was 4th in the YM 200 in a PA#9 21.94. In the IG 800 finals, Kasia Taylor, E&S, ran 2:18.92 for 4th and Hamadi Price, E&S, was 3rd in the YM 800 in 1:55.47.Jenna Arnold, Engineerng & Science grad, wins the YW 3000 in 10:26.32. Jermaine and Jerome Lowery advanced in the YM 400 hurdles, going 53.55 and 54.43, respectively. Friday: Shanae Bailey, Swenson, qualified for the finals in her 2nd event after advancing Thursday in the 200. Her 12.27 100 was 5th best among IG. Taylor Ellis-Watson, Springside School, went 56.00 to advance in the IG 400. E&S's Terence Lee came off his 5K win on Thursday and advanced in the YM 1500, running 4:07.60. HS and club teammate Harold Lamour advanced in the IG 1500, running 4:14.78. In the IG long jump, rising Cheltenham junior Brittany Howell was 4th, leaping 17-09.50. And the Mt. Airy TC IG 4x100 advanced to the finals. Thursday: Engineering & Science grad Terence Lee won the YM 5000 in 16:03.04. In the IG 200m prelims, Swenson's Shanae Bailey advanced to the final with her 24.45. Conrad Weiser rising senior Lamont Fowler advanced to the final in the YM 200 with his 21.96. Penncrest's Anthony Batch ran 48.74 to advance to the final of the YM 400. Sigma followed up their Wed 4x800 YM win with the top advancing time in the 4x400 of 3:14.79. Wednesday: Sigma International, with Father Judge's Jerome and Jermain Lower, Pencrest's Anthony Batch, and Penn Wood's Kamar Monteith, won the YM 4x800 in 8:07.45.
