09/06 Boathouse Red, White & Blue Classic
Baldwin
By Michael Carpenter
You can guarantee it's a weekend to celebrate for the North Allegheny Cross Country team after unbelievable performances from both the boy's and and girl's squads.  First came the upset in the boy's race, as preseason honorable menton North Allegheny knocked off PA#4 North Hills 56-76, led by a 6th place finish by SR Chase Broussard in 16:08. Gateway SR Daniel Krystek was known as one the top returners for the '08 season, but he really made an impact on Saturday, beating out a tough field.  Eight men were under 16:10 in a close finish, but Daniel pulled away, a sub-16 solo effort.  His 15:53 was followed by Rad Gunzenhauser in 16:00.  The JR from Mt. Lebanon took second after holding off a young SO from Morgantown in Cody Pellicone, who rounded out the top 3 finishers.  The rest of the top 10 was very tight, all within 10 seconds, featuring three men from North Hills, three from North Allegheny, and Baldwin SR TJ Hobart who finished 9th. And you never would've guessed the Lady Knight's from Norwin were going to have any problem taking the team title in the girl's race after SR Leslie Kovach and SO Jenna Gigliotti went 1-3 in 18:31 and 18:40 respectively.  But when FR Lizzie Appleton, and sophomores Ali Greco and Kelley Harrington finised 13-15-16 in a seven-second spread for North Allegheny, the upset had begun.  The preseason honorable mentioned North Allegheny girl's squad beat the PA#9 Norwin ladies 111-153.  And the Norwin girls almost settled for 3rd, as Mt Lebanon was only 4pts back in 157. The top five girls were under 19 minutes, and the top 20 were all sub 20 minutes. Note: One of Norwin's top 5 did not compete.
