AA Girls' 100m Preview
It was a near disaster for Girard College's Thelma Davies at this past week's District 1 Championships. Davies, because of an email mixup, wasn't present for her semifinal heat of the 100 meters. Thankfully for the reigning AA state champ and PIAA meet record holder, meet officials granted her another chance and she safely qualified through to the state meet.
Davies ran 11.63 by herself in her solo semifinal heat and then 11.65 in the finals. Davies appears ready to not only run away with her second straight 100 meter state title, but also to break her own meet record of 11.58 if the conditions allow it.
Annville-Cleona's Reagan Hess will be looking to challenge Davies. She's one of just five girls in the entire state to have broken 12 seconds in the 100 this season after running 11.92. The senior was fifth in the finals last season and is coming off a District 3 title in the event. Athens Area's Breana Gambrell, the favorite in the long jump also went sub-12 this season, running 11.96. The District 4 champ in the 100 meters will also be looking to give Davies a run for her money.
Elmer L. Meyers' Nalasjia Harris-Johnson was sixth last year. The District 2 champ will look to use that experience to her advantage this year. Neumann Goretti's Eliza Brooks was second at District 12, but she'll be one to watch this weekend. WPIAL champ Tara Gologram of Keystone Oaks and District 9 champ Brooke Hummel of Brookville will also have a good shot of making the final and climbing up the podium.
