The race of the weekend came at the Bishop Loughlin Games at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, New York.
Austin Kratz of Dock Mennonite, who stars in the 60 meters and 200 meters, squared off with Miles Green of Saint Joseph's Prep, who stars in the 400 meters and the outdoor 300- and 400-meter hurdles. Sunday was a compromise of sorts, as the pair met in the middle of their respective specialties, racing the 300 meters.
Green got out well in the outside lane, but Kratz closed very hard around the final turn, racing to the victory in 33.93. Green still took second 34.32. Kratz's time was good enough for a US#1, while Green ran a US#2 over 300 meters.
This race came after Kratz won the 55 meter dash in 6.40 and Green went 7.64 to take second in the 55-meter hurdles. While we don't know if these two will race again this season, Sunday was an interesting matchup between two of Pennsylvania's top athletes.
It's been a remarkable start to the season for Kratz, who also ran a US#1 21.9 at Ursinus last week to open up his season. He's now the state leader in three individual events and part of the PA#1 4x200 meter relay with his Dock teammates.
