Boys' 60-Meter Hurdles
Ayden Owens of North Allegheny left his mark on the state meet last year, running a meet record of 7.74 to win the 60-meter hurdles. Owens, now at USC, eventually won a national title in the event. No one is touching that time this year, but what we've got is a very competitive high hurdles field.
At the top is Owen J. Roberts' Scott Honicker, who has not lost in the 60-meter hurdles this season (his one defeat came at the New Balance Games in the 55-meter hurdles; he was still third). He sits at PA#1 with a best time of 8.10 that came at this past week's TFCAofGP Meet of Champions.
His best challenge could come from Central Dauphin East's Emmanuel Niang. He ran his season best and PA#2 of 8.15 at Penn State earlier this season. In that race, he was just ahead of Chase Longenecker of State College, who was third in a PA#3 8.19. Both can make a legitimate run at Honicker for the title. Longenecker is the lone returning state medalist in the field. He ran 8.30 for sixth last year.
Waynesburg Central's Daniel Layton and Hempfield Area's Jared Bannon both come in with season bests of 8.21. At the TSTCA Champs, Layton edged out Bannon 8.23 to 8.25 for the win. Look for the west's best to fair well at Penn State. Malvern Prep's Sebastian Costantini, with an 8.22 season best, will also be in the mix for a high finish.
Expect this race, like many others, to be very close for the state title.
