Boys' One Mile Run Preview
Jonah Powell of Grove City Area made a big statement with his 4:15.97 in the 1,600 meters at SPIRE. The AA state champ from XC has followed up his impressive fall with a good winter on the track. He comes in as the top seed, but no shortage of others will give him a run for his money.
Mount Lebanon's Patrick Anderson is another XC champ from the fall -- he was in AAA. Last week, he dropped a big time of 4:19.07 to win at TSTCAs last week. He proved his mile prowess outdoors last year and he knows how to race well when the lights are the brightest. Another serious contender is Tyler Shue of Ephrata. He emerged onto the scene last winter at states with a big second place effort in the 800. He's going after the mile first this year, and he may have the best pure speed in this field.
Wallenpaupack's Tyler Wirth is the top returner from last year's state meet. He was fourth a year ago and comes in with a best of 4:21 from the New Balance Games this year. Expect him to mix it up with the leaders. Another returning medalist is Cameron Binda of Greensburg Salem. He was sixth last year and comes in with a PR of 4:21 this winter.
Conestoga Valley's Nathan Grucelski put himself in the title conversation with a huge 4:21 effort at the Armory last week. He was a qualifier last year, but he'll be a contender this time around with a #4 seed. LaSalle College's Vincent Twomey and Mifflin County's Chayce Macknair are among the others in this talented field.
One thing for sure is that we can expect a bunch of season bests and PRs in this race. In a relatively open field, anything is possibly and this race could go to the best kicker. Last year, it was Liam Conway; who will add their name this season?
