PIAA States Preview: Girls' Jumps

AA Girls' Long Jump Preview

With four-time state champ and state meet record holder Breana Gambrell we'll finally see a new champion in the AA long jump. The top seed and top-ranked girl in the field is Lyric Janosik of Penn Cambria. Seventh a year ago, the junior Janosik has a had a big season that included an 18-9.5 leap at Altoona and then an 18-1 to win the District 6 title.

She'll have a host of girls looking to challenge for that win. Loyalsock's Sophia Gardner jumped 18-3.25  this season, the second best AA jump on the season. Her teammate Hailey Zurich beat her for the District 4 title. Garnder is a returning state medalist, having placed eighth a year ago. Together, those two will make a strong pair that will threaten the top spot.

Speaking of solid teammate duos, Sasha Lee and Tia Taylor, both from Saint Basil Academy will be factors.  Lee took home the District 1 title, while Taylor has a season best leap over 18 feet (18-3). Taylor jumped over 19 feet as a freshman last year.

C-Keiyah Marshall of East Allegheny comes in as the No. 2 seed in the field after a big 17-11.5 PR to win the WPIAL title. With that momentum, expect Marshall to be in the mix. Conwell-Egan's Theresa Richardson and Slippery Rock's Emma McDermott also jumped 17 or better at their district meets last week for wins.
