AAA Boys' Javelin Throw Preview
Similar to the AA boys, there are any number of throwers that could come out on top in what should be a hotly contested AAA boys javelin.
The top seed entering the weekend is Nazareth Area's Collin Burkhart, who threw 203-08 to win the District 11 title last week. He's improved in leaps and bounds this season and has made himself a major contender for the state title in the javelin.
The top-ranked AAA boy in the state is Northern's Chris Barrett. He threw 204-7 at the Ship Invite in April. Now he returns to the all weather runway looking for a similar performance to that. Barrett was second in District 3 to Hershey's Mark Suminski, who also has a season best over 200 feet. He threw 200-9 to win the district crown at Ship, and he'll be a major contender this weekend, too.
No shortage of boys are on the cusp of 200 feet, a distance it will likely take to win the state title this weekend, and that will make it interesting. Pocono Mountain East's Andrew Altemose threw a PR of 198-7 for second in D11. Third in D11 was Lucas Souders of Whitehall, who also PR'd with a toss of 195-2.
Coatesville's Ricky Ortega, the District 1 champ, threw 195-10 for that victory. He'll be in the mix for the win, as well as crucial team points in the javelin. Tunkhannock freshman Matt Prebola unleashed a huge PR of 192-10 to win the District 2 title. He enters the weekend as the nation's No. 1 ranked ninth grader. Shikellamy's Aaron Keeler tossed 191-10 to win the District 4 title, and should be a factor this weekend, too.
Bangor Area's Eric Lyon and Honesdale's Joey Scarfalloto will also be in contention in this incredibly deep AAA javelin field.
