AA Girls Shot Put Preview
Since the calendar turned to the 2021, this has been a huge year for Ashlyn Giles in the shot put. The Schuylkill Valley senior has been putting down huge marks in the shot all indoor season and she's continued that into the spring. After claiming the national title at adidas Indoor Nationals, Giles has had a big outdoor season and she will look to cap it off with a state title on Friday.
Giles moved up to PA No. 2 all-time this spring with a toss of 52-11 at a Throws U Spring Series meet. Certainly 50-foot barrier is on her mind for states again, and she'll have a shot at Allyn Laughlin's 2006 meet record of 50-10.75.
But winning the state title in the shot put will be no walk in the park for Giles. That's because Emma Callahan is in the mix here. Callahan, a junior at Shenango, is actually the top seed entering the weekend based on district meet marks. It's been a big last few weeks for Callahan, who has put down 49-foot marks in each of her last two meets, with a best of 49-3.5 to win the WPIAL title.
That consistency is a good sign headed into the biggest meet of her career. Giles may have the highest ceiling on Friday, but Callahan has the opportunity to chase the win, too. This won't be an event to miss.
Three others enter the meet with season bests over 40 feet. United's Maizee Fry, who was third at the state meet two years ago, comes in with a season best and PR of 43-1. She has great experience and will be looking for her third straight trip to the podium.
Homer Center's Justley Sharp (40-10.75 SB) and Punxsutawney's Mackenzie Martin (40-7 SB) will also be looking to top the 40-foot mark once again and compete for high spots on the podium.
