Callahan Takes US No. 1 Spot In The Shot Put

Emma Callahan's senior season is off to a great start, and this past weekend she took over the nation's top spot in the shot put. The Shenango senior put down a put of 48 feet, 9 inches, an indoor personal best and a new US No. 1, at Saturday's Youngstown State High School Meet.

The recent University of Iowa signee also broke her own high school facility at YSU, which previously stood at 48-0.25 from last winter, which was her indoor PR entering the weekend. Her outdoor and overall PR in the shot is 49-3.5 from the WPIAL Championships last spring.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to see a Pennsylvania girl atop the shot put national rankings. A PA girl has finished the season at US No. 1 in the event each of the last two years with Maria Deaviz (51-10.75) leading the way in 2020 and Ashlyn Giles (49-7) taking the top spot last winter in 2021.

Callahan is proving she just keeps getting better, after starting her career in a big way back in 2019 when she was the nation's top freshman sot putter. The shot wasn't Callahan's only PR on Saturday. She also tossed 47-1 in the weight throw to take the win. That puts her at PA No. 1 and US No. 12 on the season.
