Boys 200m Preview
Perhaps the most wide open of the day's sprint races is the boys' 200 meters. There's no shortage of talented sprinters in PA and many of them will come together in this field.
Pennridge's Joey Gant raced to the top seed with his winning effort at the TFCAofGP Meet of Champions this past weekend. Gant ran a flat track 22.23 for the win, holding off Central Bucks West's Connor McFadden for the victory. After an injury derailed what could have been a big outdoor state meet last year, Gant will look for a big day at Penn State on Sunday.
McFadden, meanwhile, is just a sophomore, but he's stepped into the spotlight as one of the state's top sprinters. He was just .07 off Gant at MOCs and will look for some redemption this weekend. Coatesville's LeBron Bessick has the fastest time in the state this season at 21.98, which he ran at the Varsity Classic at the Armory. It's been a great season for the senior, and he should be right in the mix for the win in this race.
Colin Kravitz of North Pocono has run 22.03 in the 200 meters this season, the state's second fastest time. The District 2 standout will be shooting for sub-22 and that could put him right in the conversation for the top spot. Guinness Brown of Butler will be a factor, as well. He went 21.73 last season when he took fifth at adidas Indoor Nationals. This year, he clocked a 22.06 at Edinboro, which puts him in a spot to seriously contend for the state title here (he's also the top seed in the 400).
Chambersburg's Kristian Phennicie (22.08), Norristown's Jaden Brown (22.12), and North Catholic's Trevor Paschall (22.13) are right there, as well. Phennicie was a AAA 200m state champion, Brown was a AAA 100m state champion, and Paschall was the AA 200m state champion last season. These seniors are ones that should make a big push for a high finish here, all coming off the 60m earlier in the meet. Others to keep an eye on include Methacton's Zachary Willen and Carnival champion Jackson Clarke of Danville Area.
Anything can happen in the indoor 200 meters. Lane and heat draws will certainly play a role. It's going be a close one and maybe (just maybe) this is the track event with the best chance at providing a "slow heat" winner.
