Boys High Jump Preview
Few events at the indoor state meet have produced the level of unpredictability at the indoor state meet that the boys high jump has brought over the last few years. Many events require an athlete's "best on that day" to take home a state title, but it seems especially true in the high jump. The same might ring true for this year's high jump with a number of boys right around the same season best.
The two top seeds come into the meet with season bests at 6-7. There's Henry Banks Brandstadter of Sprinside Chestnut Hill Academy. The senior was the state's top indoor jumper last winter and he's improved into this season, hitting a best of 6-7 and staying undefeated. Then there's Jewleus Benner of JP McCaskey. Also a senior, he's got progressively better as the season's gone on, culminating with his 6-7 at the LL Challenge a few weeks ago.
Banks Brandstadter and Benner are the two favorites, but a number of boys will be in the mix for the win here.
North Allegheny's Owen Curran is another boy who has seen a great improvement over the last few weeks. The junior cleared a PR of 6-5 to win the TSTCA title last week and has a lot of momentum going into the state meet. Central Bucks South's Aiden Carey jumped 6-4 early in the season, and he'll aim for a similar result this weekend to put him in contention.
After that, two other entries have cleared 6-3 this season: North Penn's Xavier Bryan-Booth and Shamokin Area's Marcus Moyer. Both of these boys will look for a big day to chase a state title.
It's a relatively wide open battle for the win, and it will certainly be a tight competition for one of the eight spots on the podium.
