Drew Griffith Claims PA Gatorade Athlete of the Year

Butler junior Drew Griffith was named the Gatorade Pennsylvania Boys Player of the Year for the 2022 Cross-Country season.

In December - Griffith was named the PA MileSplit Junior of the Year.

Griffith was on a mission all season, winning five different Invitationals/Championships, including the Champs Sports Northeast Regional Championships.

He added wins at the Marty Uher Invitational, Carlisle Invitational, TSTCA Championship, and the PIAA District 7 Championship. 

He placed runner-up at the PIAA State meet and eventually landed inside the top 10 at the Champs Sports National Cross Country Championship. He was the second-highest-finishing junior in that field.

While winning races - Griffith was also setting records. He ran 14:49.3 at the Carlisle Invitational, which makes him the sixth fastest boy in Pennsylvania Cross Country history.

At the WPIAL Cross Country Championships - he shattered the previous course record set by Mount Lebanon alum Patrick Anderson. Anderson, who currently runs at UNC, ran 15:41 to set the record in 2019. Griffith managed to run 15:17 - 24 seconds faster than Anderson. 

Griffith is currently maintaining a weighted 4.18 GPA in the classroom - displaying his knack for the term student-athlete as he continues to excel in all facets.

Gatorade selects and awards each State's top girl and boy in each sport with their Player of the Year Award. Each state winner is automatically nominated for consideration for the National Player of the Year Award.
