Simon Gratz had a rough start in the Philly Public League 4x400, and missed qualifying for the Championship of America in the event. Coach Robert Massey, while disappointed for the team, wanted to focus on the remaining 4x100 COA and the Philadelphia Area 4x400. The first 4x400 was delayed for a short time while a decision was made on whether to keep the Pubic League race one heat, or split it into two. The Gratz first man got caught in the crowd on the first turn in the 20-team race. Then, in the afternoon 4x400 Philly Area Race, as the anchors approached the final turn, the Camden runner was bumped off the inside rail for a step. Gratz received a DQ.
