The Girls PennTrackXC Great Eight 2/21/11

The regular season is now over and it's the big pre states week. Who's running their best right before the big finale? Who has broken away from the rest of the field in their respective event? Who has come up in the past few weeks to become a serious contender for a championship? Let's recap how big the final weekend of the season ended up being

Emma Keenan of Gwynedd Mercy, Elyse Wilkinson of Penn Charter, and Lindsay Rheiner of Council Rock North provided the most thrilling action for the girls this weekend. Keenan came from behing to beat Wilkinson and Rheiner, running a US#3 time of 2:13.09 and breaking the all time DVg record of Latavia Thomas. Rhiener was 3rd in 2:14.16. Wilkinson's 2:13.34 was her 2nd best time of the season. Leah Nugent of Abington became the new state leader in the 60 meter hurdles with a US#4 and DVG record of 8.57, breaking Ryan Krais record of 8.60. Emerald Walden of Plymouth Whitemarsh ran a personal best 8.75 to finish 2nd and US#7. In these two events, you have three PA athletes inside the top seven nationally!

Sarah Holl of Upper Dublin made a serious challenge to district 1 XC champ Tori Gerlach of Pennridge. Holl ran a PA#6 time of 5:09.66 in the DVG Meet of Champs mile to finish hundreths behind Gerlach. Holl has run around 10:30 in the 3000 meter run and maybe making her push to be one of the runners to watch come outdoors. Speaking of the 3000, Megan McGovern ran a personal best of 10:08.62 to move up to PA#4. She did a lot of the running by herself and may have hit her stride at the right time to contend for the title on Saturday.

In the sprints, both Cierra White of Engineering and Science and Iman Wilkerson of Penn Hills equaled their season best times over the weekend in the 60 meter dash. But the contenders to chase them came to the forefront. Jody Evans of Quakertown ran 7.68 to move up to PA#3 while Tymerah Burgess of Simon Gratz ran 7.77 to move up tp PA#4, and Erikka williams of Rochester ran 7.93 to move to PA#7. In the 200, Wilkerson did improve her PA#2 time in the 200 meter dash to 25.15, while White continued to defeat her local competition. These four will be in the mix come Saturday.

As for the relays, the distance medley had the most changes to the top eight, as half of the top eight have shifted. Sara Sargent ran a solid five minute anchor leg to move Pennsbury up to PA#2 in the DMR with their DVG MOC win of 12:26.87. Downingtown East moved to PA#4 with a time of 12:34.95, Central Bucks East ran 12:36.18 for PA#5 with Katie Kinkead leading off and Jenny Guidera anchoring, and Haverford Township ran 12:39.40 for PA#7. The other additions were PA#2 marks. North Penn won the 4x8 at Lehigh with a PA#2 time of 9:32.01 and Central Bucks West was 2nd behind Abington in the 4x4 with their PA#2 time of 4:03.55.

The biggest movement in the field events was the long jump, with six of the top eight performers having seasonal bests, highlighted by Maddie Eustache's 2nd place finish in the DVG long jump. Her mark of 18-8 is PA#2. Erikka Williams of Rochester won the Tri States MOC with a mark of 18-3.25, good for PA#4. Diamond Hodge of Girls High, Gabby Becattini of Methacton, Anna Chodubski of McDowell, and Imani Shell of Friends Central make up the back half of the top 8 with new season best marks. In the triple jump, Hodge (36-11.25, PA#2), Katie McCoubrie of Conestoga (36-10.75, PA#3), and Logan Brenker of Conwell Egan (36-3.75, PA#6) made their way into the top 8, with McCoubrie and Brenker jumping over 36 feet for the first time all year. In the shot put, Hickory had the 1-2 combination of Jennifer Neider (39-6) and Taylor Woods (39-2) go PA#5 and PA#6 with their performances at the Tri State Meet of Champs, with Margaux Krahe of Bethel Park earning PA#8 with a 39 foot throw. Tri States also added two performers in the high jump, with Natalie Shiffler of Hempfield winning with a T-PA#3 mark of 5-6 and Paige Rittleman of Butler clearing a T-PA#5 height of 5-4. Finally, in a debut pole vault event, Kathleen McPhillips of Carlisle won the first ever title with a mark of 11-4, good for PA#6.
