The Girls PennTrackXC Great Eight 4/26/2011

Welcome to the pre Penn Relays edition of the Great 8! With the amazing mid season carnival upon us, the time has come when everyone starts to make their strides towards Shippensburg. But this season, some events decided to get the fireworks started before this week.

The sprints are absolutely on fire this season. One week someone shines and then the next that shining star is dimmed by someone else's rising star. Is there a top sprinter right now? Cierra White made her case to be the best with her 24.66 200 at the Abington Invitational on April 20. However, on Saturday at the Colonial Relays, Springside's Taylor Ellis-Watson earned a head to head victory against White in the 100 (12.02-12.17) and then became the new state leader in the 200 (24.13). Five of the top eight marks in the 100 happened during the easter week holiday. Indoor 60 meter champion Tymerah Burgess of Simon Gratz reintroduced herself to her competitors with her own 12.17 100 meter dash. The 200 has four new marks from the past week and the top eight have separated themselves from the rest. The 400 meter dash is showing its depth, with four girls under 57 seconds and five more under 58 seconds.

Distance has settled down a little bit after the hot start from many 1600 and 3200 meter runners. All of the noise right now is coming from the 800 meter runners. Gwynedd-Mercy's Emma Keenan made her return to the event and ran 2:13 twice in under 72 hours, finishing the week with a 2:13.54 at the Colonial Classic. Four of the top five marks are from the past week, including teammates Maria Seykora (PA#2 2:14.39) and Kelly Nappi of Notre Dame (PA#4 2:16.56). Sub 2:18 will earn you a spot in this elite group.

Just like the open sprints, the sprint relays had their final tune ups before the Penn Relays and many teams look ready to take on the big stage. For the readers out there, I hope you all have photographic memories when it comes to the relay lists because with Penn Realys this week, this could be TOTALLY different when the smoke clears. The 4x100 meter relay added six new performances, three from the same meet at the Philadelphia Public School Relays held on Monday. Twelve teams are now under 50 seconds already this year, with Norristown (48.45) leading the way with their win at Abington. The 4x400 has four new teams in the top five and six in the top eight overall. Before the week started, there was only one team under 4 minutes. Now there are 4, led by Central Bucks West's 3:57.36 at their home relay invitational on Saturday. Coatesville is PA#3 with their 3:58.81 win at the Rustin Invitational and Cheltenham ran a PA#4 3:59.96 to win at Abington.

In the hurdles, one contender emerged to challenge Shelley Black's 13.99. Emerald Walden of Plymouth Whitemarsh ran a personal best 14.23 on her home track at the Colonial Relays for PA#2, winning by almost a full second over PA#5 Mikalia White of Spring Ford (15.17). Walden added a PA#4 time of 45.72 to win the 300 hurdles earlier in the day. Emily Wenger of Garnet Valley ran a PA#3 time of 45.58 to win the 300 hurdles at the Larry Simmons Invitational. There are seven performances under 46 seconds in the event, but the sub 45 second mark has not been hit yet.

In the throws, the javelin is very spaced out, with the top four becoming a class on their own. After a hot start in the event, only one new mark came from the past week (PA#4 143-5 by Jessica Merckle of Fort Cherry). The discus added a state leader in freshman Jeia Gilliam of Fort Bend High School, who finished 2nd out in Texas with a mark of 147-5.50. Rachel Serafin of Hempfield regained her top spot in the shot put with a mark of 44-9.50. Currently there are five girls over 40 feet.

In the jumps, Megan McCloskey of Germantown Academy improved on her PA#1 mark with a 5-7 clearance at the C.B.West Relays. The freshman is now 3 inches better than the field. Geena White of Avon Grove provided the latest solid mark in the triple jump with a PA#6 mark of 36-6.75 at the Rustin Invitational on 4/20. Erikka Williams of Rochester (Long Jump) and Larisa Debich of Hempfield (7) (Pole Vault) remain at the top of their events.
