With the Delco XC Championships being on Saturday, that kicked off championship season for PA athletes in XC.
The day kicked off with a combined middle school race at 10 am as Elijah Lynn dominated the race from the gun, taking the win in 10:40, as the Haverford Middle School squad would take the team win with 24 points. On the girls' side of the race, Viviana Tornatela took the win for the girls in 11:03, and the Haverford Middle School girls dominated the team side by scoring 15 points.
To switch things over to the High School side of things, the girls' race went off first with ultimately Coco Conner of Radnor taking the victory in 19:17 on the very hard and hilly Rose Tree course; Cayla Gaffney would finish 2nd in 19:21, and Cassidy Jones would finish 3rd in 19:26.
On the team side of things, it looked like Marple Newtown would be a shoo-in to win the title, but in an upset, Episcopal Academy took the victory, scoring 78 points while missing their #1 and top runner in the country, Kendra Williamson, due to injury. Marple Newtown would finish in 2nd with 89 points, and Springfield Delco would round out the top 3 with 99 points in a somewhat competitive team race.
The last race of the day was the varsity boys race, which definitely had a few unexpected things happen. To start things off, Connor Walsh of Radnor took the individual win in an upset and kind of dominant victory of 16:26. Rowan Carr would place 2nd in 16:41, and Paul Oluwa would round out the top 3 in 16:48.
On the team side of things, Ridley proved that they are dominant and have a real shot to contend and maybe even win the district title in a few weeks. They scored 42 points to take the team title and put 6 in the 16 overall with a 17:05 average and a 32-second spread across the top 5. Penncrest would place 2nd with 87 points off a tiebreaker for the 6th and 7th man coming into play, as Haverford Township would also score 87 points but finish in 3rd for the team title.
I think a few major takeaways from Delco are that I believe this is the first time Radnor has had the individual winner in both the boys and girls races ever. Another key takeaway has to be how good the Ridley boys team actually is, and how close their spread is makes them a real contender to win almost any meet. Even though they might not have a real true low stick, if they can pack run at big meets like districts and states, they can make a real impact in team titles and place very high.
