Luke Jones of Elk Lake ran an impressive 15:31 to win the boys race. Aaron Wilkinson of Valley View finished 2nd, but still ran a solid 15:51. Blue Ridge was the only team in the race to place three inside the top 20 and that was enough to earn them the team title over Wyoming Valley West 82-119.
For the girls, top AA ranked Elk Lake finally got their chance to run after the flooding last week postponed their debut. Elk Lake placed three in the top ten and five in the top 20 to win the girls race 47-84 over Pleasant Valley. For a team that returned all seven runners who won states last year, the team was led by a 3rd place finish from freshman Jenny Vanetten (19:17). Catherine Lombardo of Pittstown Area just missed a sub 19 minute performance, but still ran 19:04 to earn gold.

Boardman Spartan Invitational
Boardman
Photos by Phil Grove

A little change in scenery - or states - didn't affect the results much for western Pennsylvania runners and teams at the Spartan Invitational in Boardman, Ohio.
Grove City's Daniel Jaskowak continued to show he is a force to be reckoned with statewide, Ean DiSilvio of Allderdice kicked to his second close win of the 2011 season and the North Allegheny boys claimed their second consecutive team championship at one of Ohio's largest invitationals.
Jaskowak backed up his breakthrough victory at the Red, White & Blue Invitational on Sept. 10 with a wire-to-wire victory in the Division I race. The junior's winning time of 15:43.51 is the third-best clocking in the meet's history and the fifth-fastest ever on the repeating loop layout.
"That's what I wanted to do, I wanted to prove myself again," Jaskowak said of his 10-plus second win. "I think this really solidifies where I am."
Jaskowak immediately went to the front of the field and had a 10-meter gap when he went through the first kilometer in 3 minutes. The chase pack of several top Ohio runners could not close the gap.
"I think Daniel looks at what kind of competition he has and he goes out and makes sure he gets out in front," Grove City coach Mike Sample said. "He doesn't like to be in the crowd anymore, he doesn't like to come from behind. He wants to get out in front."
With a sixth from senior Logan Steiner, PA#3 North Allegheny claimed the Division I team title with 96 points. The next four Tigers were separated by less than 7 seconds in locking up the team title over the No. 5 and 11 teams in Ohio - Powell Olentangy Liberty (162) and Mentor (180). Erie Cathedral Prep was seventh and Grove City eighth in the 36-team field.
Earlier in the meet of more than 3,800 runners, DiSilvio matched up for the second time this season with Corry Area's Austin Pondel. DiSilvio had outkicked Pondel by 1.1 seconds to win the McDowell Invitational on Sept. 3, and Saturday's finish in Division II was almost a duplicate. The Allderdice junior, who also is a state-ranked wrestler, crossed the line in 16:06.9, with Pondel just 0.7 seconds back.
"I don't know what his potential is because so far all he has been doing is chasing the leaders," Allderdice coach Ed Flynn said. "Ean's a very strong kid so I don't think there's too many that can run away from him. He's going to be in all his races."
DiSilvio and Pondel separated themselves early from the field of almost 300 runners. On the second of two loops in the 3.1-mile course, DiSilvio was planning for his finish.
"I hoped to make my move going into the woods, and I did but he passed me again," DiSilvio said. "Once we came out (of the woods), he was a good 10 meters ahead of me. I just had to work to catch him at the end."
Hampton's Brian Shields was sixth and led the Talbots to third in the team standings with 206 points. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary - Ohio's top-ranked Division II team - won with 100 points, with No. 5 Peninsula Woodridge second with 163. Allderdice was fifth at 243.
On the girls side, PA#7 North Allegheny and Hampton picked up a pair of thirds. Paced by senior Shannon Wagner's 13th-place finish, the Tigers had 141 points. Brunswick - Ohio's No. 1 team - led the way in Division I with 68, while No. 7 Hudson had 113.
Hampton got a fourth from senior Emily Rabenold in finishing third in Division II with 191 points. Ohio's No. 2 Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy used a 1-2 finish to grab the top spot with 45 points, while top-ranked St. Vincent-St. Mary was second with 65. Villa Maria Academy finished seventh.

Briarwood Invitational
Archbishop Ryan
Pennsbury girls were looking to rebound from their first PA defeat in over a year last week at PTXC 3. Downingtown East was looking to make a name for themselves on a big stage. Sara Sargent and Ann Herman finished 5-6, but Downingtown East had a 8-9-10-11 start with the four girls being 8 seconds apart. But Pennsbury's 3-4-5 finished in the top fifteen and that was just enough to hold off Downingtown East 53-54.
Megan Lacy came over from New Jersey to run the 3rd best time in the history of Belmont Plateau. Her time of 18:04.2 was 14 seconds better than 2nd place Tori Gerlach of Pennridge.
In division 1, Kara Steinke of Methacton got a small bit of revenge from the Abington Invitational where Hannah Grossman of Strath Haven beat her out. The two of them met again and Steinke came out the winner with the 4th best time of the day of 18:43.8. Grossman ran 19:05.2 for 2nd place. Lenape Regional (NJ) placed four in the top ten to score 57 points and beat 2nd place Upper Dublin by 34.
In division 2, Pearl River (NY) got a 1-2 finish from winner Molly Shine (19:17.8) and runner up Kelly Hayes (19:30.5) to score 56 points and beat 2nd place Great Valley by 19.
For the boys, Dustin of Chestnut Hill Academy carried the private school torch with pride and entered the Belmont Plateau record books, recording the 3rd best time in the history of the course. His time of 15:39.1 was 25 seconds better than Thomas Awad of Chaminade. Cardinal O'Hara made their 2011 debut and picked up right where they left off last year, placing five in the top 14 with a 36 second spread to win the team title of Salesianum 48-84. Dan Savage was O'Hara's top runner, finishing 3rd in 16:09.5.
In division 1, Sam Hibbs (16:15.6) and Conner Quinn (16:19.8) of Hatboro Horsham finished 1-2 for the 2nd straight week in a row. But the team title went to Central Bucks East, who were led by a 4th place finish by Alex Kane (16:34.3) to hold off Lenape Regional (NJ) 75-87.
In division 2, Great Valley showed how dangerous they can be this season, having their best performance thus far this season. Ned Willig won the race with a time of 16:18.2 and his team scored 39 points to beat out 2nd place Germantown Friends.

CHAMPIONSHIP RACE
There will be 8 teams attempting to win the TOP plaque. A few of the teams have 1 or 2 STRONG individuals, but have no real chance to take down the more solid squads. Notre Dame(6th 2010) and Cherokee(NJ) should battle it out for 3rd. The TOP 2 teams are likely to be District 1 powers---Downingtown East and Pennsbury(2nd 2010). DE is 7 deep and can really pack it in. Expect them to possibly have all 7 in the TOP 25. That will still not be enough to defeat Pennsbury who will be looking to finish 1st this week after barely losing to West Chester Henderson at PTXC3.
As for the individual title 5 girls appear to have the inside track to victory. Cherokee’s Lacy was 1st overall at her home course last week winning by over a minute in a shortened(?2 Mile) course. Seykora(NDAME)(12) ran a great race at PTXC3 leading for almost 3000M and finishing in an outstanding 3rd place. The other 3 favorites have met each other numerous times. Each of them have beaten the other on various occasions. It has been a pleasure to watch such tenacity and talent so many times(on XC courses as well as on the track). Two of these fierce competitors are Seniors who would love to end their careers on even higher notes. Gerlach(Pennridge) and McGovern(NP) have already shown that they may be ready!!! Gerlach smoked the field at Centaur beating the PA State AAA runner-up from 2010. McGovern was easily 1st at the CBE Inv. winning by over a minute. Last, but certainly not least, is Sargent(Pennsbury). She was 4th at PTXC3 and we all know she has proven these past 2 years how tough she is!!
LARGE SCHOOL
18 schools will vie for the TOP 3 awards. St Marks(DE) was first last year and Kellenberg(NY) was 2nd and both teams should be up there. Ohara’s tradition can never be counted out and both Lenape(NJ) and South Lakes(VA) are coming to PA to take home some hardware. Methacton beat Strath Haven at Abington, but both have a shot. Don’t worry, I did not forget CBE who beat NP last week at the CBE Inv. They have 5 girls within 40 seconds(All in the 21”s). They are the clear favorite!!!
Ocasio from Lenape(NJ) will have to prove she can handle two of the TOP PA girls if she expects to bring home Individual “GOLD”. Grossman(Strath Haven)(12) defeated Steinke(Methacton)(10) last week at Abington with both girls going out way too fast!! Doing this at Belmont Plateau will take its toll big time as the hills are truly difficult.
SMALL SCHOOL
It will be a nice mixture of small public and private schools in the SMALL SCHOOL race.
22 teams will line-up to challenge the famous course on the Plateau. Pearl River(NY) has won this race 3 years in a row and looks to dominate again. They will have all they want from a young and improving Great Valley team that was 2nd at Abington. Other teams looking to take pictures with plaques are VJM(2nd 2010), GFR(3rd 2010), Highland Regional(NJ), Padua(DE), and Ursuline(DE).
The individual race appears to be totally wide open
