The first two weeks of the boys indoor season may have already set the foundation for the entire 2011-2012 track season. Drew Magaha of Upper Moreland and Ned Willig of Great Valley had many highlights during last year's track season, and they even took some headlines from the pure distance guys during cross country. Now seniors, the two mid distance stars have already placed themselves above the rest. On December 10, magaha ran 4:26.24 in the mile while Willig had the performance of the weekend, running 1:55.58 to win the 800 meter run. This past weekend, Willig went to NY for the Bishop Loughlin Games and ran 4:17.47 to finish 2nd in the mile to Foot Locker National Champion Ed Cheserek. Back at Lehigh, Magaha raised the steaks, running a national leading 1:54.20 in the 800 meter run. There's no telling what heights these two will reach.
In the sprints, Penn Wood and Strath Haven have come out strong early on. 300 meter hurdles state record holder Eric Futch is off to a good start, leading the state in the 200 (23.14) and 300 meter dashes (34.41), earning victories in both. His teammate Johnathon Stiles leads the 400 with a time of 52.01. Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven leads the state with a 7.17 performance in the 60 meter dash. Haneef Hardy of Swenson won the 600 meter dash at Bishop Loughlin with a time of 1:21.86, pacing Swenson to a good early season start. Penn Wood (3:23.00 4x400) and Swenson (1:32.30 4x200) have been the early pace setters in the sprint relays, with Pennsbury and Norristown being the other sub 1:35 4x200 meter relay teams.
In the field events, Tyrek Edwards of Archbishop Ryan leads the state in the triple jump (45-9.25) and is 3rd in the long jump (22-0.75). Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven leads the long jump with a 22-4.50 mark. Ibn Short of Milton Hershey (6-5) and Mishop Coppock of Pottstown (6-3) are the only state qualifiers in the high jump. Shawn Mayer of Palmyra leads the pole vault with a clearance of 14-9, one of three vaulters at 14 feet or better. Finally, Kyle Long of Hempfield (3) soared to the top of the shot put list with a mark of 59-0.50 at Dickinson over the weekend. Upper Darby's Praduman Singh is 2nd with a solid 57-8 throw.
