We have entered the final week for teams and individuals to earn state qualifying marks before the indoor state championships on February 25. But before we enter the final weekend, this past weekend provided some great highlights and some of the contenders you will see at Penn State had impressive performances.
The Central Dauphin East duo of Deme'shia Davis and Courtney Mitchell highlighted strong sprint performances at the PTFCA Indoor carnival. Davis took over the state lead in the 200 meter dash, running 24.98 to become the first girl to break 25 seconds this season! Mitchell ran 7.84 in the 60 meter dash for PA#5 honors, winning her 2nd 60 meter dash at Lehigh this year. The two were also part of a PA#2 performance of 1:44.59 in the 4x200 meter relay, coming close to defeating Swenson on Saturday. Also in the dash, Jada Steward of West Catholic ran a PA#4 7.79 at the PCL Championships to win the title. She also ran 25.72 for PA#6 honors in the 200 meter dash. Steward and Mitchell are chasing Jody Ann Evans of Quakertown in the dash, who has held the state lead in the event since the very first night of the season. Hannah Green of Greater Latrobe ran the fastest 400 meter dash of the weekend with her 58.60 for PA#6 honors out in Ohio. Easton ran a PA#4 time of 1:46.31 in the 4x200 meter relay at the Carnival to finish 3rd. Eliana Yankelev of Lower Merion improved on her PA#3 mark in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.21.
In distance action, current 400 meter state leader Ceaira Brown of Overbrook went up against the best the 800 meter run can offer and came out victorious with a PA#2 time of 2:14.29 at the PTFCA Indoor Carnival! Natalie Deacon of West Chester Henderson was 4th in the same race with a PA#6 time of 2:15.77, making it six girls under 2:16 so far this season. Maria Seykora of Notre Dame regained the state lead in the mile at the Millrose Games with a 9th place finish in 4:58.00, while Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic ran a converted 5:03.49 mile to move up to PA#7. Strath Haven girls also ran well at the Millrose Games, finishing 2nd in the 4x800 meter relay with a US#5 time of 9:10.59! North Hills came within an eyelash of taking the state lead in the distance medley relay with a PA#2 time of 12:19.90!
In field event action, we had a new state leader in the long jump, as Diamond Hodge of Girls High won the event at the PTFCA Carnival with a new indoor personal best of 18-4.75! Former PA#1 Jordan Matthews of Abington was 2nd with a PA#2 mark of 18-2.50. PA#3 went to Kayla Hope of Tamaqua with her winning mark of 18-0.75 from the Albright Invite in midweek. The top six marks in the long jump were all set over the past week! Grace Giampetro of Villa Maria Academy cleared 11-6 in the pole vault for the 2nd straight week, while Taylor Woods of Hickory closed the gap on her teammate Jennifer Neider in the shot put, throwing a PA#2 mark of 42-3.75 in Ohio. Martina Milcec of Norwin (PA#4 38-11.50) and Alexandra Stevenson of Bethel Park (PA#5 38-6.50) also set top five marks in the shot put.
