After the first week of holiday competition, the boys performances showed solid improvement compared to the first two week. Yet despite that improvement, the sprint events have been dominated by two Delaware County seniors. Early on Friday, Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven clinched his 3rd PA#1 performance of the season, running 8.25 to win the 60 meter hurdles. He was already PA#1 in the long jump and was PA#1 in the 60 meter dash. By night's end, the honor of holding three PA#1s went down to two, and Eric Futch of Penn Wood was able to make the claim of having three PA#1 marks. His performance of 50.30 in the 400 meter dash put him on top of the 200, 300, and 400 lists. Brandon Shippen of Norristown became the new state leader in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.10. Daquan Coker of Perkiomen Valley was 2nd with a PA#2 mark of 7.15. In a quiet week for sprint relays, Upper Moreland ran a PA#3 time of 3:33.78 in the 4x400 meter relay, with Pennridge (3:34.89) also cracking the 3:35 mark.
The 3000 meters crowned a new state leader, while the 800 is proving to be the deepest event in PA. Ernie Pitone of Cardinal O'Hara ran 9:07.35 to win the division 2 race on Friday, and record the only sub 9:10 performance in the early going. Meanwhile, the 800 meter run now boasts eleven state qualifying performances after three weeks, including ten sub 2:01 performances. Holy Ghost Prep's Ryan Horgan (1:58.88) and Lucas Elk of The Haverford School (1:59.54) ran PA#3 and PA#4 performances respectively. In distance relay action, Strath Haven improved their PA#1 in the distance medley with a 10:54.96 mark in the early meet on Friday, until AAA cross country state champions North Penn bettered that mark with a winning time of 10:53.10. Lasalle ran the first sub 8:20 in the 4x800 meter relay, running 8:18.96 to win the division 1 race.
In field event action, Chazz Wilks improved on his early season mark with a winning throw of 54 feet even to win the division 1 shot put, and Harley LaCroix of Cheltenham jumped 22 feet even in the long jump to earn PA#5 honors.
