The holiday season did nothing to slow the boys down to end 2011! During the week, the boys side produced an impressive FIVE US#1 performances, which all came at the same meet, the Burdette Classic!
Imani Brown of Reading, the AAA triple jump outdoor champion, looked like a champion last week, as he set the US#1 mark in the triple jump TWICE! First, he jumped 48-2.50 to win at Christmas City, and then 48 hours later, he jumped 48-5 to win at the Burdette Classic. Jared Posey of William Penn (47-7.50) and Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven (47-2.50) had PA#2 and PA#3 marks themselves. Praduman Singh of Upper Darby also set a national leading mark on Thursday, throwing 59-4.75 to surpass Kyle Long's US#1 mark by over 4 inches.
Chris Willims of Strath Haven made his debut in the pole vault, and for the first time in nearly two years, Williams cleared 15 feet. His final mark of 15-3 is an indoor best and a US#1. His teammate Wellington Zaza blazed to a US#1 time of 8.04 in the 60 meter hurdles. This marks the 2nd straight season that a Strath Haven athlete set a US#1 in the 60 meter hurdles at the same meet! Williams did it last year with a time of 8.15. Finally, Foot Locker All American Dustin Wilson of Chestnut Hill Academy made his indoor track debut in the 3000 meter run and came away with a US#1 time of 8:48.69, eleven seconds better than the previous US#1 mark! Ned Willig of Great Valley also broke 9 minutes, running 8:58.09 to finish 2nd.
Buried in the national leading frenzy were more state leading marks in the sprints. T.J. Elliott of Central Dauphin East edged out Brandon Shippen of Norristown to win the 60 meter dash at the Burdette Classic. Elliott's time of 6.96 is a state leader, while Shippen's time of 6.99 is PA#2. In an event with 8 new top performances, Eric Futch of Penn Wood became the new state leader in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.63, one of four performances under 23 seconds. For the 2nd time in 2011-2012, Futch leads the state in 3 events!
Futch and his teammates also ran state leading marks in two relays in New York, running a US#8 time of 1:31.04 in the 4x200 meter relay to finish 3rd, and a US#2 time of 3:21.84 in the 4x400 meter relay to finish 2nd. Finally, Holy Ghost Prep competed in the Championship distance medley relay at Marine Corpse and finished 4th with a state leading time of 10:33.11.
