After the first weekend of the new year, the boys of PA picked up where they left off at the end of 2011 with some national calibur performances and the state rankings went through some major shake ups!
Ned Willig of Great Valley made his 2nd attempt at qualifying for the Millrose Mile on Saturday at the Hispanic Games and came away victorious with a US#3 time of 4:15.61! He is now ten seconds better than the next miler on the list, Jack Huemmler of Strath Haven, who finished first in the morning heats of the mile out of over 500 runners at the same meet, running 4:25.18. The 800 meter run had three top five PA performances, including a PA#2 1:55.50 by Swenson's Hannef Hardy! Ryan Horgan of Holy Ghost moved up the list with a PA#4 time of 1:56.98. Tyler Castelli of Central broke into the top five with a PA#5 time of 1:58.78. After five weeks, we have 11 guys under two minutes! The 4x800 has a brand new top five led by Penncrest slightly beating out Strath Haven for top honors. Penncrest ran 8:02.43 for 2nd place at Hispanic Games with Strath Haven finishing in 8:02.96 for 3rd. Great Valley added the 3rd sub 8:10 performance on Monday night with a PA#3 time of 8:07.82. Former 4x800 leaders Lasalle ran the distance medley relay at Haverford and ran a PA#2 time of 10:37.22, winning by over 30 seconds in the process.
The sprints were once agan highlighted by Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven, who followed up his national leading 60 meter hurdle performance with a US#10 time in the 55 meter hurdles in 7.59! His performance was one of a brand new top 14 list in the event! Maxmillian Hairston of Wissahickon (7.70), Aaron Willett of Coatesville (7.78), and Chris Alamo of Girard College (7.82) all broke the 8 second mark. T.J. Elliott of Central Dauphin East won the 55 meter dash at the Montgomery Invitational in Maryland in a new state leading time of 6.48. Zaza won the 55 meter dash at Glen Mills in 6.60, and Jake Longenecker of Hempfield ran 6.64 at East Stroudsburg to shake up the top three. The top three in the 200 was also shaken up led by Eric Futch of Penn Wood, running 22.37 at the Hispanic Games. Nicholas Patton ran 22.44 at State College for PA#2, and Niager Mathis of Swenson ran 22.51 for PA#3. So far, only seven have cracked 23 seconds. Qhyle Elijah of Bensalem ran a PA#4 time of 50.96 in the 400, becoming the 4th PA guy to crack 51 seconds this season.
In field event action, Jared Alison of Dallastown became the 2nd fifteen foot pole vaulter this season, clearing the height at Franklin and Marshall. AAA state champion Patrick Anderson of Kane Area cleared 14-7 at State College to get his indoor season up and running. Tim Moses of Palmyra cleared 14-4 to crack the state top five. The high jump may only have two state qualifiers through five weeks, but the list of group on the cusp of the 6-3 mark is getting a little longer. Charles Wilson-Adams of Tyrone, Tyler Lafountain of Central York, and Joey DeCecco of Cumberland Valley all cleared 6-2 this weekend, making it four athletes within one inch of the qualifying mark. Cebastien Glosy of Central moved to PA#7 in the triple jump (43-8) and Chazz Wilks of Cardinal O'Hara continues to close the gap with the top two in the shot put, throwing 54-6 at Haverford for another gold medal.
