TSTCA Indoor Meet #3
Story and Photos by Phil Grove...
Angel Piccirillo made short work of things on the track, and a trio of Hickory seniors went to great lengths Saturday inside Edinboro University's year-round track bubble.
The Homer Center standout one-upped her performance from the first Tri-State meet of 2012 by winning the mile and 400-, 800- and 3,000-meter events in dominating fashion, with each of her winning efforts being faster than the previous week. Picking up where she left off on Edinboro's 236.621-meter oval, the Villanova University signee destroyed the mile field in a PA#3 4 minutes, 59.30 seconds before coming back in the next event for a PA#4 effort of 58.30 seconds in the 400 dash.
Piccirillo was back again in the next event and led wire to wire in the 800. Her 2:14.77 is PA#2 and US#10, while Peyton Hampson of Waynesburg hung on for a PA#6 clocking of 2:17.26. Saving her best for last (after taking a break during the 200), Piccirillo cut almost 20 seconds off her winning time from the previous Saturday, covering the 3,000 in a state-leading and US#15 10:06.00.
"After talking with my coach, the 3,000 was probably my best race," Piccirillo said, noting that her PR of 10:02.35 from 2011 came on Penn State's banked track. "I was really glad to pull off a decent time and being by myself, too.
"The 800 also is not a strength of mine and came at a weird time. It was hard to keep loose (in the 800 and 3,000)."
Meanwhile on the infield, senior Matt Bell of Hickory moved up to PA#3 in the shot put with an improvement of more than 2 feet on his season best. He unleashed his winning throw of 59-4.25 in the prelims but could not improve in the finals.
"I fouled one farther last week, but I changed some stuff up a bit and got it (to 59 today)," said Bell, who is only 0.75 of an inch off the state lead. "Honestly, I set 59 for (my goal) indoor so I'm already there, but I definitely want to go farther (now)."
Although he could not improve over the final three throws, his last-round effort measured 58-0, and his four legal puts were 55-10.5 or better. Teammate Luke Lewis was just off his season best in second at 52-3.
"When i jumped from 57 to 59, all I did was turn my hips to throw better and throw higher and just get after it," Bell said. "Jen (Neider), Taylor (Woods) and I go back and forth. It's pretty fun, and the competition during practice helps a lot."
Neider topped 43 feet for the second consecutive week as Hickory went 1-2 in the girls shot. Her winning effort of 43-1 bested Woods' 39-11.
Working at the other end of the venue, a Hornet was just at impressive in the boys high jump. John Mudrey cleared a T-PA#1 6-7 for the second consecutive week at Edinboro.
"I'm glad that I'm progressing, but I still want to go higher," said Mudrey, who jumped 6-6 in qualifying for last year's state meet at Shippensburg. "I won't be happy until I go higher, so I'm very disappointed right now."
Competing with a sore shin, Mudrey entered the competition at 6-1 and had first-attempt clearances all the way through his winning height. His third try at 6-8 was his closest.
"My approach is fine, my actual takeoff is fine, but my arch is lacking to say the least," said Mudrey, who is in his third season as a high jumper.
Two other field event winners also put up strong efforts, with Hempfield's Larisa Debich clearing a T-US#3 12-6 to win the pole vault and Ambridge Area's India McCoy going 5-4 to top a high jump field that had 12 over the bar at 5 foot.
While Piccirillo was dominating the multi-lap races on the girls side, quality wins were recorded by three different competitors in the boys distance races. Wil Bailey of Penn Hills was unchallenged in the 800, opening a large gap before the midway point and holding on to a PA#5 1:57.43. He later anchored the Indians' PA#7 clocking of 8:14.65 to win the 4x800 relay as Lee Zelkowitz's team went with a slowest-to-fastest lineup.
One of the most exciting boys races was the mile. Grove City's Daniel Jaskowak needed every bit of the distance to work past Alex Moran of Mt. Lebanon as the two were side by side during almost all of the final 100 meters. Making up about an 8-meter gap over the last 400, Jaskowak ran PA#7 4:26.06 to Moran's PA#10 4:26.34.
In a AA-AAA matchup, AA cross country champion Brendan Shearn of North Schuylkill led a fast and deep 3,000 field as the top six broke 9:10. Shearn's 8:54.83 is now PA#3, while Baldwin's Andrew Kuchta ran PA#4 8:57.43 and North Allegheny's Logan Steiner turned in a PA#8 9:03.53. Steiner also was part of North Allegheny's PA#6 10:44.24 victory in the distance medley relay.
State-leader De'vion Tate of Erie McDowell was pushed in the boys long jump as his 22-0 winner topped four over 21-3. Jacob Hensh of Laurel Highlands cleared 15 feet to win the pole vault.
Back on the track, Jeff Elam of Greater Latrobe went PA#7 8.43 to win the 60 high hurdles, and Seneca Valley ran a PA#6 time of 1:31.60 for first in the 4x200 relay.
