5/22 - William Penn wins Public League Championships

Public League Championships

Tuesday-Wednesday, May 21-22, 2002 - Public League Championships @ Edison HS - It's called a team title because it takes more than one individual to score enough points to win. And William Penn has quite a few individuals who could almost win a meet on their own. All Juanita Broaddus did was win the 100 (11.94), the 200 (23.87), the 400 (55.08) and get 2nd in the Long Jump (17-00). All Christina Smith did was win the 100 Hurdles (14.61), the 400 Hurdles (1:00.04),the High Jump (5-02) and get 3rd in the 200 (25.00). And all Madonna Patterson did was win the 1600 (5:22.25), get 2nd in the 100 Hurdles (15.8), get 2nd to teammate Tyeshia Thomas (2:17.43) in the 800 (2:19.50), and anchor the 4x800 to a win in 9:54.99. And on top of the 800 win, Thomas got 2nd in the 400 Hurdles (1:03.14), and ran on the winning 4x400 (3:56.17). And there's Shantia Byrd, Lynda Whitfield, and Kandis Worthington (24.67 in the 200) to thank for those 202 points, too. Let's just call them William Penn, Public League Champions. Other elite performances included Tyneshia Gardner, Girls High, 56.09 in the 400. For the boys, John Fudge, Simon Gratz, took the 110 Hurdle (14.43), the Long Jump (21-10), and the Triple Jump (44-08.50). Dewayne Dawkins, Overbrook, took the 400 Hurdles in 56.12 and the 200 in 22.50. Central captured the boys' title.
