Who are the ones to watch at Saturday's Shippensburg Invitational?
Coverage
Saturday wasn't the first meeting between Greencastle-Antrim's Taryn Parks and Northern's Marlee Starliper, and it likely won't be the last.Far from it.The pair of freshmen distance runners have seen an awful lot of each other since they started high school this past fall. They dueled on a few occasions during the XC season, most notably in an epic race to the finish at the PIAA XC State Championships in Class AA. Then at indoor states in the mile, they were literally separated at the line by .01. So when the two toed the line at Saturday's Shippensburg Invitational, history has taught us that it was likely going to be close again.Starliper already had an 800 under her legs after anchoring her Northern squad to a PA#5 and win in the 4x800 meter relay. But she was still ready for another dual with Parks. With about 500 meters to go, Parks and Starliper got away from the rest of the pack and we knew it was going to be another race to the line.In the end, Parks had the better kick once again, powering down the finishing stretch to a PA#1 4:56.71. Starliper took second in a PA#3 4:58.08. Saturday's race served as a great appetizer for what's to come to rest of the way this spring. The two will see each other again, surely, with the District 3 AAA Championships lurking next month, and then possibly the state championship a week after. An early prediction for those races? It'll be close between the two freshmen phenoms.GIRLS 1,600 METER RUN FINALSALL RESULTSPLACEATHLETETEAMRESULTWINDH#1Taryn Parks9Greencastle-Antrim4:56.7112Marlee Starliper9Northern4:58.0813Abby Yourkavitch11Chambersburg5:06.7814Alana Yoder9Solanco5:07.9415Kate Dickow10Warwick5:17.3616Makenna Krebs10Central Dauphin East (CD East)5:18.5717Marie Rulapaugh12Cumberland Valley5:21.7118Emma Simon10State College Area High School5:26.4019Mikayla Carnathan9Selinsgrove5:27.05110Kelsei Bixler12Palmyra5:27.211
Hatboro-Horsham's Nick Marino already had the pole vault competition wrapped up at Shippensburg on Saturday. After a great dual with PA#2 Payton Morris of East Pennsboro, Marino, the state leader, cleared 16 feet and was on to 16-3, which would better his own PA#1. On his attempt, Marino was over the bar, but he clipped it on the way down. But instead of falling to the mat like usual, it bounced and landed back on its barrings.Sometimes the bar is kind.Marino had a few good looks at 16-5, but he won the competition with that PA#1 16-3 and a PR. He's now just three inches off the state record, which stands at 16-6. There are certainly plenty of meets left in the season.Watch the madness above and check out other meet links and the pole vault results below:Complete ResultsPhoto AlbumsRace VideosBOYS POLE VAULT FINALSPLACEATHLETETEAMRESULTWINDH#1Nicholas Marino12Hatboro Horsham16-03.0012Payton Morris11East Pennsboro Area SD15-07.0013Zach Austen12Cumberland Valley14-00.0014Richard Iovanisci12West Chester Rustin14-00.0015Brady Glatfelter12Eastern York14-00.0016Hayden Fox12Hempfield Area (7)13-06.0017Luke Knipe10State College Area High School13-00.0018Zach Sattiaux10Hempfield Area (7)13-00.0019Sam Blumenthal12Carlisle12-06.00110Gavin Wood12Whitehall12-06.00111Ross McFadden12Northern12-00.00112Ethan Dionne12Hempfield (3)12-00.00113Thomas Hallman12Carlisle11-06.00114Chase Diehl12Shippensburg11-06.001
