AAA Girls' 800m Preview
Only two of the medalists from last year return to the state championship in the 800m this year. A quick glance at the seed times and names, tells you this is anyone's race. One of those returning medalist is North Penn senior Mikaela Vlasic. However, Vlasic is poised to do better than her eighth place this year. Coming in as the #2 seed, she ran 2:12.44 last weekend after a 2:11 anchor split to win her 4x800m relay.
The other returning medalist is none other than the defending state champ, senior Olivia Arizin of Cardinal O'Hara. A few weekends ago she popped a PA #4 2:12.13. Arizin got second at indoor states this winter, and last year, ran a 2:06.80 to take home the gold. Her teammate Christine Mancini has also run 2:12 this year, and should factor in.
Maddie Salek of Western Allegheny did not make finals last year, but she has a way better chance this year coming in as the top seed with a WPIAL title and 2:12.38. Not far behind her will be Amanda Kalin of Pine-Richland who will be making her first appearance at the state meet after she ran a fast time on the heels of Salek last weekend in District 7.
Another 2:12 runner is Kelly Jawork of Abington, who will return after the 1600m and be in the mix.
Others in the hunt for a medal will be two District 1 seniors, Coatesville's Makayla Eberly and Senna Ohlsson of Ridley. Liz Simms of Butler has also run a 2:14 this season. From District 3, look for Hannah Jones of Hershey.Entries:
