The Penncrest brothers of Chris Kazanjian (9:41.5) and Matt Kazanjian (9:45.1) finished 1-2 in the 3200 meter run. Betrik Kimbrough of Coatesville cleared 6-4 to win the high jump. CJ Lowe of Kennett won the 100 (11.53, 11.40 prelims) and 200 meter dashes (23.23, 22.95 prelims). Rahjeir Miles of Coatesville threw 171-3 to win the javelin. For the girls, Alyssa Rudawsky (5:13.0) and Skyler Berardi (5:15.6) of Garnet Valley finished 1-2 in the 1600 meter run. Teammates Katie Keyser (2:19.78) and Liz Mcgroarty (2:21.75) finished 1-2 in the 800 meter run. Ellie Pollock of Avon Grove won the long jump with a PA#2 mark of 18-2. Adashia Franklyn of West Chester Rustin threw a PA#2 mark of 39-5.50 to win the shot put.
Wilson Area (3) went to Virginia over the Easter Holiday and performed very well. Indoor 400 meter All American Jimmy Brooks won the 400 meter dash with a state leading time of 48.39, just slightly faster than his indoor All American performance. Brooks also added a 22.25 performance to win the 200 meter dash and earn PA#4 honors. His teammate Justin Maloney ran 39.63 to win the 300 meter hurdles, good for PA#4. The two were also on the 4x400 meter relay that won in a state leading time of 3:23.91. Jesse Poore won the long jump with a mark of 21-3 and Darian Weidenhammer (154-6) teammed up with Yensi Uribe-Martinex (143-3) to go 1-2 in the discus. For the girls, Skylar Dantzler ran 13.05 to finish 2nd in the 100 meter dash and 22.62 to finish 3rd in the 200 meter dash. Jesse Wallace threw 110-3 to win the discus.
The 29th PA Classic had been built up as a parade of champions from the recently completed indoor state championships. With all that talent participating and the weather cooperating, the meet produced some great early season performances!
Indoor national high jump champion Cyre Virgo won her event with a meet record and US#4 mark of 5-9.75! That mark broke a record that had stood for 28 years and it stands as a personal outdoor best for the sophomore.
Kayla Coley of Cheltenham came away with three gold medals and two PA#1 marks. Her two PA#1s came in the hurdle events. She won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.30, which is a lifetime best for the indoor 60 hurdles state champion. She also won the 300 meter hurdles in 43.27, which is also a lifetime best for her. She had capped off the morning with a win in the long jump in 17-5.25, good for PA#3.
Emma Keenan of Gwynedd-Mercy Academy started off her day with the 4x800 meter relay, splitting 2:18 on the anchor. Then she anchored the 4x100 meter relay to a 4th place finish. Finally, she ran the 400 meter dash, an event she won last year with a meet record of 56.10. This time around, she had the indoor champion Caela Williams of Penn Wood running against her. In the end, Keenan successfully defended her title and set a new meet record with a time of 55.80, good for US#18 and a PR.
The Sheva sisters Marissa and Caitlyn finished 1-2 in the 1600 meter run, with indoor mile champion and 2012 outdoor silver medalist Marissa winning in 5:02.85 and Caitlyn finishing behind her in 5:07.25.
Sarah Firestone of Mercersburg Academy earned her 2nd gold medal of the season in the javelin with a throw of 143-3. Taylor Chapman of Pennridge won a gold medal for the 2nd year in a row at this meet, winning the 200 meter dash in 24.85. Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley ran 10:51.52 to win the 3200 meter run. Penn Wood cracked the 4 minute mark in winning the 4x400 meter relay (3:59.15) while defending AA state champions and state meet record holders Swenson ran 48.41 to hold off Cheltenham for the win and start their title defense on the right foot.
For the boys, Imhotep Charter made an impact in the 4x100 meter relay, winning the event in 43.53 after being back a bit going into the last exchange of the seeded heat. The Philadelphia public school won the event in their league last season and today was the start of improving on that success and reach for more success at the state level after a great indoor season in the 4x200 meter relay.
One of the members of the relay, Donaldo Benjamin, won an individual gold medal in the 300 meter hurdles with a state leading time of 38.74 to beat out defending meet champion Todd Townsend of Neumann Goretti (39.47).(NOTE: Our wireless device was failing during an interview with Benjamin and we apologize for the technical difficulty). Townsend did run 14.37 to win the 110 meter hurdles.
Niager Mathis of Swenson came away with two gold medals, running 49.07 to win the 400 meter dash and 21.72 to win the 200 meter dash, both PA#1 marks.
The star continues to rise for Kevin James of Cardinal O'Hara. The sophomore held off senior Ben Ritz of Germantown Academy to win the 3200 meter run in a meet record time of 9:15.72 ahead of Ritz's 9:19.88. Both performances broke the record that had stood since 1988.
Cumberland Valley ran 8:02.13 to come from behind and win the 4x800 meter relay. Alex Coburn took back the lead in a 1:56 on the third leg, giving the baton to anchor Alec Kunzweiler to earn a victory for the defending AAA state champions. Anodofa Anyam of Church Farm cleared 6-5 to win the high jump. Walt Pegues of Central won the long jump (21-7.50) and the triple jump (45-2.75). His triple jump performance tops the state list entering April.
Top returning discus thrower Bryan Pearson of Bangor Area picked up a win to start his season with a PA#2 mark of 169-9.
