The training regimen of a distance runner can be a lonely undertaking. For Ean DiSilvio of Taylor Allderdice, racing for records and state qualifying berths has proved to be another task to be completed alone.
"It was much harder, especially on that last lap when you have no one to push you," DiSilvio said of running fast alone. "I went out fast. I wanted to go out in 2:10. If I did that, I knew I could run 2:17 for the next 800 because I wanted to break the city record." The Allderdice standout stormed away from the field on the gun and settled into his race plan, covering the first lap in 62 seconds and the first 800 in 2:09. The most difficult part of the 1,600 -- and the one that dooms most record attempts -- is the third go-round. "Most definitely on the third lap, I definitely picked it up and tried to go as hard as I could because I knew that was going to be the make it or break it of the race," said DiSilvio, who also won the 3,200 run. The third lap on the Oliver Citywide Academy track came and went in 68 seconds, as did the final circuit, and the senior finished in 4:26.01, nearly 40 seconds ahead of the runner-up but more importantly under the old mark of 4:27.3. "I tried to get (the record) last year and came up a little short, but I finally got it all by myself this year," said DiSilvio, who finished third in the 2012 WPIAL Class AAA cross country final and was a medalist at Hershey. "It feels really good." In the opening weeks of the 2013 season, DiSilvio finished second to Grove City's Daniel Jaskowak in the 1,600 at the South Hills Classic, running a then PR 4:26.60. This race came just weeks after the Allderdice standout completed his senior wrestling season, one that saw him finish a victory short of a second consecutive trip to the state tournament. Going from cross country to wrestling to track takes a toll on DiSilvio physically as he had to lose almost 20 pounds to wrestle as a 138-pounder and then get back into shape to run fast.
"I keep training," he said of what he will do before the state track meet opens on May 24. "I'm still getting in shape from wrestling, so every workout counts for the two weeks I have left until Shippensburg." In other highlights, Isahiah Geeter of Westinghouse rallied past Greg Webb of Taylor Allderdice in the 400 dash before surviving a tight finish in the 200 as the top three were separated by just five hundredths of a second and the top 5 by 14 hundredths.
And Allderdice sophomore Joe Graham was the other double winner on the boys side, taking firsts in the long and triple jumps.
Allderdice was the easy team winner, with the Dragons claiming the boys trophy by almost 100 points over Brashear and doubling the Bulls in the girls standings.

Photos and Summary by Phil Grove There were times during Thursday's WPIAL (District 7) Championships when it just wasn't a fair fight, with athletes running roughshod over their competition and then giving the record book a beating in the process. Shaler Area's Brianna Schwartz was the chief protagonist, dominating her competition in putting two PA#1s and a US top 5 together to get western Pennsylvania's contingent officially on the road to Shippensburg. The sophomore middle distance standout kicked off her day with another front-running performance in the Class AAA 1,600 meters. Despite hitting the midway point a little faster than planned, Schwartz was able to hold form for a PA#1 and US#4 4:47.07 victory. "I started off a little bit too fast, so the last lap was pretty painful," the winner said of reaching the 800 mark in 2:20. "I knew I wanted to get out fast, and I knew I wanted to break the record, which was 4:52. I tried to get a good lead in the first lap, and I just tried to keep it."
Several hours later, Schwartz stepped on the track for another record-breaking run. Continuing to build on her experience level in the 800 run, the Shaler Area runner worked her way through the pack in the opening lap en route to an even-paced, state-leading 2:10.38. "I didn't want to take the lead the first lap, so I just stayed there with Gina (Alm of Hampton)," Schwartz said of being alongside her sometimes training partner through a 65-second opening lap. "Like she said, I expected it to be a little bit faster than that, but it felt pretty good. I stayed right next to her until the 200 mark, and that's when I took the lead. I just tried to keep her back and finish strong." Alm set a PR in grabbing the silver medal, moving up to PA#4 with a 2:13.65 as six bettered 2:16.
"I was hoping for my speed to help me a little more because I knew that was the advantage I would have over her since she is stronger," Alm said. "It didn't go quite the way I planned, but I still have to be happy with a PR and hopefully I can knock it down at states." Going the Distance... to Shippensburg. Colin Martin knew it wasn't going to be easy, but it undoubtedly was going to cap a memorable day for the Fox Chapel junior and his twin brother, Ethan.
"I knew Ethan and Brent were definitely going to try and run a really, really fast time for the last lap," Colin said. "So I knew that I was in store for a really, really painful eighth lap. I just tried to get myself ready for that, laps six and seven, just try and set myself up for a good final lap." Ethan Martin had the best and fastest finish, hitting the line in 9:17.20 followed by Kennedy (9:17.30) and brother Colin (9:19.91). The 1-3 finish for the Martins was just the tip of the WPIAL iceberg for the Fox Chapel runners as another Ethan-Colin finish was good for gold and silver in the 1,600. "It's the best feeling in the world," Ethan said. "We've been hoping for a 1-2 in the WPIAL this year, and we got it in the mile. We knew Brent was going to be pretty tough, but a 1-3 finish in that race ..." Juniors swept the top three spots in the 1,600 as Ethan Martin was credited with a 4:18.12, with Colin second in 4:18.63 and Hampton's Nathan Sloan next at 4:19.42. "To do a 4:18 today in the heat with him is amazing," Ethan said of the brothers' efforts. "We got into it thinking we'll let people take the first lap, but immediately we've got to take the lead because this is going to be a strength race. And if it came down to a kick, it's anybody's race." One race that definitely did not come down to a final sprint was the AAA girls 3,200 as Shannon Malone of North Hills was alone to take a crack at some records and the state's top 10. The end result was a PA#5 10:41.24 that put her almost 22 seconds ahead of the runner-up. "It was a little tough," the winner said of running alone basically from the start. "I had a couple people yelling splits to me and that helped. I'm excited for next week to have competition around me to help me through those middle laps." The top sprinting performance of the day belonged to Gateway's 400 relay team of Julius Rivera, Jae'Len Means, Montae Nicholson and Cameron Gray. The Gators dominated the highly anticipated event with a PA#3 41.89, easily outdistancing Seneca Valley (42.60) and Mt. Lebanon (42.85). "No, we were actually looking for a little bit lower," Gateway coach Tom LaBuff said when asked if he was surprised by the quartet's clocking. "The handoff was a little shaky on the end, but they did a good job."
"I've been trying to break into the 43s," said the sophomore, who also contributed a leg on Hempfield's 400 relay that ran a PA#5 47.76. "To get that at WPIALs and then going to states is the best." In AA, defending state champion Lelis moved a T-PA#10 14.84 in winning the 100 hurdles before breaking her meet record in the 300s with a 44.57 clocking that was more than 1.2 seconds ahead of the field. In the AAA 110s, Gateway's Nicholson is now PA#6 after a 14.39 to a PA#10 14.50 from Elizabeth Forward's Matthew Bernadowski, while Alyssa Wise of Washington moved to PA#10 with a 12.18 to win the AA girls 100 after running 12.20 in the prelims, and Mt. Lebanon clocked a PA#6 48.17 in the 400 relay and Latrobe went PA#6 3:54.61 in the 1,600 relay. North Allegheny put its corps of distance runners to good use, posting a PA#9 7:54.29 in the AAA 3,200 relay to Kiski Area's 7:56.65. Fox Chapel won the 1,600 relay in a PA#10 3:20.59. North Allegheny's Kyle Shivetts ran a PA#6 21.80 to win the AAA 200, while Central Catholic's Torey Doaty equaled his season best of 48.72 to win the AAA 400 over Robin Hall of Penn Hills (PA#8 48.78) and Upper St. Clair's John Rutkowski (PA#10 48.81). Kailyn Clancy of California was a big winner in the AA shot put with a PA#6 43-0, while Josh Wise of Washington won the AA high jump at T-PA#9 6-6. India McCoy of Ambridge moved into a tie for fourth in the state with a 5-7 win in the AAA high jump, and sophomore Kelsey Plecenik of Norwin bested a quality AAA girls pole vault at T-PA#4 12-1 with Greensburg Salem's Cassidy Shepherd second and now PA#7 at 11-9. In the javelin, Luke Smorey of host Baldwin rifled the 800-gram implement a PA#5 200-3 and sophomore Morgan Defloria of Hempfield threw a T-PA#6 139-8 to win in AAA. State's Top Long Jumpers Hit Mark in Last Round
"I hated it," Walker-Kimbrough said. "I told my coach when I foul I feel like I'm dead." The competition was all but over when the senior stood at the end of the runway for her and the field's final attempt. Her third-round leap of 18 feet, 11.25 inches was worthy of first place and a meet record, but she wanted more. "I was a little nervous," she said of her feelings. "I hate fouling. My coach ran back and said you have nothing to lose. He said I already won, but I was going to take my last jump either way. Just let it all out." The advice worked perfectly, as did Walker-Kimbrough's approach. After losing marks on her first two efforts in the final to having her foot over the foul line, Walker-Kimbrough was legal in round 6, hitting the sand at 19-2.75 for her and the state's second-best this year. "Twenty (feet) wouldn't be bad," she said when asked of her goal for Shippensburg. "(The official) screaming out 20 or seeing a 20 on the board wouldn't be a bad thing." Behind Walker-Kimbrough was a strong field as Gloria Schifino of Penn Hills moved to T-PA#5 in round 5 with a runner-up leap of 18-6, while Hempfield teammates Bridget Guy and Maddie Holmberg were next at PA#8 18-5.5 and 18-5, respectively, and Mars Area's Lydia Dennis was fifth at 18-2.75. Unlike his counterpart in the girls event, Isaiah Brooks of Woodland Hills faced a more daunting task entering the sixth round -- hit a big jump in his finale or risk not claiming a WPIAL gold medal in the deepest competition in the state this year. The sophomore came through with a monster effort, adding a half-inch to his PR and grabbing a share of the state lead at 23-8. The winning effort came after Brooks also fouled on his first two tries in the final. "I was so tired after I ran the 200 and then I went there," Brooks, who also was sixth in the 200 and 400 dashes, said. "I just got (back) into my comfort zone." Gateway's Montae Nicholson put together a brilliant series of jumps, holding the lead from the opening round until late in the sixth. Reaching at least 22-2 on all six jumps and averaging 22-8, Nicholson grabbed the top spot at 22-9.5 and moved it to 22-11.25 in the second. He added to the pressure for Brooks and rest of the field by going 23-1.5 in round 4 before being pushed back to third as Brian Papich of Fox Chapel Area skipped over the 22s and went 23-3 to take the lead for only one jump as Brooks followed with his new PR. In the AA girls long jump, Essence Barron of New Brighton won with a leap of 18-2.5. In the girls triple AAA jump, Walker-Kimbrough moved to T-PA#6 with a 37-11.75, finishing ahead of the 37-9.5 by Dennis.

The 1600 meter run belonged to Marissa Sheva of Pennridge, as she broke away early on and ran a solid 4:57.12 to set herself up to try and improve on her 2nd place finish from last season. Older sister Caitlyn was 3rd in 5:07.28, and also advances to Ship.
Courtney Smith of Unionville led the 3200 meter run from the 3rd lap on and cruised to a solid victory in 10:32.50. Three of the top five were Unionville runners, as Emily Fisher finished 4th and Anne Birkenmaier was 5th. Veronica Eder of Central Bucks East (2nd in 10:43.62) and Kate Scott of Council Rock North (3rd in 10:48.15) finished in the middle of the Unionville trio.
Central Bucks West repeated as 4x400 meter relay champions, taking this year's title with a new district record time of 3:47.62, which is good for 2nd in the state behind AA squad Swenson. Strath Haven also retained their district relay title, winning a tightly contested 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:10.14, which is .05 seconds behind state leaders Great Valley on the season. Allie Wilson created a lead for her team in the 3rd leg while anchor leg Kristen Miller held off a chase pack of five runners in the 2nd lap to keep the title. Taylor Hojnacki of Central Bucks South won her 2nd gold of the weekend, taking the discus with a mark of 134-5. Sydnee Jacques of North Penn jumped 37-9 to win the triple jump.
The 800 meter run went out very quickly, as Brad Rivera of Bensalem took it to the front and led the pack to a 25 second 200 and 53.3 400 meter splits. State leader Jeffrey Wiseman of Council Rock South then took over the lead and came close to his state leading mark from the Henderson Invitational, running 1:52.95 to win the gold over Rivera's 1:53.70. In the 1600 meter run, Christian Kardish of Holy Ghost Prep paced the field for more than half of the race, setting up the field to have a fast finish. With 500 meters to go, Tony Rssell of West Chester Henderson and Jack Huemmler of Strath Haven took over the race. The two state champions dualed it out on the back stretch until Huemmler took over with 200 meters to go and came away with the gold medal in 4:13.68 to Russell's 4:14.75.
After a blazing first 200 meters of the 3200 meter run, the pace quickly slowed down, eliminating any possibility of a sub 9 minute performance. Ross Wilson of Council Rock North led a pack of seven runners that was spreading out in the final 2 laps and Wilson was the strongest when it mattered most and he took home the gold medal in 9:14.81. ![]() Wellington Zaza of Garnet Valley continued his dominance in the hurdles, earning comfortable wins in the high hurdles (13.86) and tying the district record set just last year in the intermediate hurdles (37.08).
In the relays, Bensalem now leads the state in two relay events. They entered the district meet with the best time in the 4x800 meter relay and they successfully defended that mark and their title with a time of 7:48.03. At the end of the meet, knowing they needed the gold medal in the 4x400 meter relay to take home the team title, Bensalem became the new state leaders in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:16.07. That performance clinched the team title by 1/2 point over Coatesville.
Pennsbury backed up their state leading time in the 4x100 meter relay by coming close to their state leading mark in winning the relay in 41.94.
![]() Last but not least, Ethan Shalaway of Boyertown had a big personal best performance in the javelin, taking the state lead and adding over 7 feet to his best ever mark with a throw of 208-8. The mark ranks 4th in the country for 2013!

SHIPPENSBURG -- With ideal weather dotting the terrain, multiple records fell on Saturday at the District 3 Track & Field Championships. In the 1,600, Carlisle's Zach Brehm was disqualified from the 1,600-meter boys' Class AAA run after a rules infraction took place. But all was not lost as he had qualified in the 3,200 on Friday and would also qualify in the 4 x 800 and 800 on Saturday. Todaro was the overall winner in 4:13.47. Having also won the 3,200-meter run on Friday, he opted out of the 1600 at States in favor of another runner -- which put Lower Dauphin's Cole Nissley in the state competition in his place. "I'm really happy with that race," said Todaro, a High Point recruit. "I wasn't sure what the official was. I wanted to go out and get a PR. I haven't PR'ed since last year. Everyone ran very well. It was a fast race, a lot faster than previous years." Giant Heave: While controversy sidetracked the meet somewhat through the afternoon, a slew of records fell on a day that saw little wind and cool air. Schuylkill Valley's Evan Arnott, who entered the Class AA discus with a PR of 190-00, capitalized on recent form with a district winning throw of 182-4. It was nearly an eight-foot district record. He managed the throw despite no warm-up, a miscommunication that occurred earlier with an official when Arnott believed he would have a round of shake-out throws. But ultimately the loose entry into the event proved to be a game-changer, as Arnott aired out his best heave on his first attempt. He fouled on his second attempt, before hitting a series of lesser throws in the last preliminary and final round. "I went out there today just to win," said Arnott, who aided Schuylkill Valley's Class AAA Team Championships on the day -- he also added a second-place finish in the shotput. "The district record is a bonus. I came out here to get my three points and hopefully help the team get the championship." It was a successful day overall for Schuylkill Valley, which saw a series of athletes place well. Senior Jared Horne won the 110-meter hurdles (15.17), high jump (6-4) and triple jump (43-7.5) and placed second in the long jump (22-8.5). Senior Jason Coon won the shotput (59-1) and junior Tyler Castro added a second-place finish in the discus (136-01), junior Glen Heck was third in the 1,600-meter run (4:30.81). "It's a balancing act," said Horne, who scored well in four events. Half-Mile Magic: All four classifications scored district records in the 800-meter run, with Annville-Cleona senior Shawn Wolfe making the most of his off-and-on season. The senior, who missed four meets this year due to an internal issue, ran until there was no more left in the tank, falling down in exhaustion at the finish line after he captured a time of 1:54.39. Cumberland Valley senior Alec Kunzweiler won the Class AAA boys' race in 1:51.68, Hershey senior Libby Nolan won the Class AAA girls in 2:12.52 and Trinity's Shannon Quinn won the Class AA girls' race in 2:14.73. "I felt like it was all adrenaline the last 200," said Wolfe, who also aided Annville-Cleona's first place 4x800 team. "I felt like there was good race." Wolfe hedged his bets with a fast 55-second first lap, pulling considerably past the field before trying to hold on with a sub 60-second last lap. "It was pretty tough," Wolfe said. "I knew a lot of guys were quick 400 guys. But I knew I had a big lead with 400 to go. Even though it looked like I was by myself, I was still thinking the whole time I had fast guys chasing me." Conversely, Nolan had to make up ground on her last lap. "My last lap, I had to stick on her [the leader]," Nolan said. "I wasn't sure who was on my side, so she caught me off guard, so I just stuck with the both of then. I thought when we got to the final curve and she moved in, it was time to go." ![]() "We knew there were a lot of good teams," Kunzweiler said. "We came out here knowing we had to run fast. We knew Carlisle and Red Lion were running well all year, and we knew they would be peaking at the right time. We just wanted to come out here and run the best of our year. We wanted to keep our momentum going into states. "When you have three guys set you up and give you the baton with the lead, it falls on my shoulders to make sure that we come home with a win at the end of the day." Concentration is Key: Milton Hershey senior Ibn Short, PA#1 in the high jump, was beaten in the Class AAA event by Lancaster McCaskey's Tyree Ballenger, who scored a height of 6-6, but he wasn't demoralized. The veteran brushed off the result and went to his next event, winning the long jump with a leap of 22-1.50. The result, and somewhat disappointing early showing, barely affected him. "Each event is a new event," Short said. "I'm not going to hold a grudge against anyone because I didn't do well in the high jump." The same goes for Central York's Jay Stone, who doubled down on an early nick on the first hurdle of the Class AAA boys' 300-meter hurdles, going on to claim the win and a personal best of 37.63. "I hit the first hurdle pretty good," said Stone, who also won the 110-meter hurdles. "But that was a nice wake-up for me. I hit it and knew I had to take off. The guys were close coming around the turn, so I was just hoping to keep kicking." In the Class AAA girls' race, Ephrata's Mary Witmer scored a district record with a time of 42.11. "I felt really confident going into today," Witmer said. "My goal was to break the record and I felt I could PR today." Bishop McDevitt junior Anna Bailey, who started throwing the javelin this season, won the event and broke the previous district record by five feet. Her final heave of 137-5 came on her last attempt. Bailey said her speed led to the breakout throw. "I was so happy then," she said. "I was all smiles." AAA Girls Highlights

Top 2 Auto Qualify for states. Places 3-8 qualify if state qualifying standard is met
Meet Feature and Photos by Phil Grove
A gymnast for 15 years, Rebekah Petty is used to seeing a world turned upside down. Saturday afternoon during the District 10 Class AA championships, the Greenville standout threw the state pole vault rankings for a loop with not one but two state-leading marks. Only a junior, Petty claimed gold by clearing 12 feet, 6 inches and then sliding over 12-8 on her first try to set the stage for a possible repeat performance on Friday at Shippensburg University. ![]() Petty came into the competition at 10-6 and clinched first place by passing 11-0 and then soaring over the crossbar at 11-6. Another first-try over at 12-0 set the stage for a shot at the top spot in the state rankings. "She cleared 12-3 last week (but) we wanted to get some attempts at bigger heights," Greenville pole vault coach Justin Lewis said of the reason for placing the bar at a district record 12-6. "We could have gone to 12-3, but the whole point now is to get her actually rocking back and getting her feet up in the air." As the bar went higher Saturday, Petty kept pace by switching to poles with higher weight ratings. "After my 12-foot jump, we decided to move up to the 140 (pound pole) because we thought that was the best option to try to clear 12-6 and then again with 12-8," said Petty, who needed two attempts to top 12-6. "In practice I've been getting (12-8), but (it was) definitely a surprise. I didn't even know if I'd get 12-6 today." Despite clearing the new PA#1 on her first attempt, Petty and her coach agreed that was enough for this day and ended the competition. "I took a lot of jumps, I was tired," she said. "It was (a mutual decision) to keep me safe before states." Petty started pole vaulting as a freshman. Her current status as the highest flyer in the state comes as a surprise to the speedy junior. "Definitely, because when I was a freshman I pushed the pole and I didn't go 10-6 until districts week," she exclaimed. "Last year I went to a lot of camps and I just skyrocketed and got my PR up by a foot and a half. That was awesome as well, and this year is definitely an exciting year for me so far." In 2011, Petty was seventh in Class AA at Shippensburg and the highest placing underclassman at 10-6. Last year, she tied for second at 12-0 and was the lone underclassman in the top six. Lewis noted that a couple of factors have been at play in Petty's rise in an event that can be exciting and unpredictable. "She has the body awareness and that's where it brings everything together," he said. "She has the speed, she has the 'It' factor as an athlete but she also has the gymnastics background where she knows where her body needs to be and how to get it there." Her quickness down the track was on full display earlier in the day when Petty was the top qualifier in the 100-meter dash at 12.64 seconds. In the final, she went a couple of ticks better with a 12.60 to take the gold medal. Although she has scratched herself from the 100, Petty is ready for relay duty in Shippensburg as Greenville's 400 relay squad was second on the Harbor Creek oval and advanced to the state meet. ![]() "I would say the long jump because I broke my school record and my personal best, so I'm happy about that," he said of ranking his best performance on Saturday. "I was a little too close to the bar (trying 6-7.25 in the high jump). My steps were a little off, but I'm not going to complain. It was a good day overall, so I'm happy about it." In the triple jump, Jacoway was matched against Northwestern's Kyle McKeen, who has gone 47-2.5 this year for No. 3 in the state. Jacoway hit his winning mark in the prelims and outlasted McKeen, who finished just an inch behind at 45-6.25. "To get 48 is pretty good," Jacoway said of his season best from last weekend's Mercer County Invitational. "I feel as though if I keep working hard, next week at Shippensburg I might be able to get 50." Sharon coach Charles Moss also believes great things are in store for Jacoway when the PIAA meet gets under way. "He can get the 50, and the reason I say that is he went to the prom last night," Moss said. "Slept on the bus coming up here and probably didn't get in until sometime this morning. His performance was make the state meet requirement, and we'll really focus on state when we get down there." Another performer looking forward to the final stop of the 2013 season is Julie Falvo of Wilmington Area, who moved to PA#7 with a winning toss of 127-4 in the discus. "It wasn't a good wind, but it wasn't bad basically," said Falvo, who was the leader after the prelims with a 126-4 toss. "It was what I'm used to. "I wanted 130 really bad today, but it makes me want it more for states so hopefully I will be past that." Other top performances were turned in by Villa Maria freshman Claire Brown, who won the 800 run in a meet record 2:15.59 and beat sophomore teammate Grace Trucilla (2:16.85) to the line, and General McLane freshman Bethany Evankovich, who claimed the 400 dash in 58.64. Ninth-grader Bernadette Prichard of Villa Maria won the 1,600 and 3,200 runs as underclassmen swept the top three spots in each of the multi-lap races. ![]() On the boys' side, dash standout Clay Allen of West Middlesex was a double winner, claiming the 100 in 10.90 and the 200 in 22.46. Ryan Smathers of North East also won twice, cruising to a 4:17.13 victory in the 1,600 before holding off hard-charging Corey Twichel of Girard in the 800 as the top two crossed in 1:57.27 and 1:58.10, respectively. State-leading shot putter Jon Yohman of Wilmington won the shot and discus, Hickory ran a meet record 42.52 in the 400 relay and Luke Patten of West Middlesex went 14-0 in the pole vault.
