Sprints and Hurdles
With Vincent Moody, Clairton - the AA state leader in the 100 meter dash - opting to run the 200 meter dash, the remaining four sprinters to have broken 11 seconds this season will dual it out for the gold medal. DeShawn Coleman of Hickory has the best time of the group this season (10.84 on April 27), while Clay Allen of West Middlesex returns as the defending silver medalist with a season best 10.90 at District 10. Jhaloni Johnson of Springfield Montco enters with the best District performance over the weekend (10.87 at District 1) and has broken 11 seconds three out of the six times he has run the event this season. Dan McSurdy of North Schuylkill has a season best of 10.85 from his league championship meet and will be in the mix for gold this weekend.
Allen was also the silver medalist in the 200 meter dash last season behind record setter Kalil Slaughter of Sheffield. Allen has the 2nd best 200 meter dash in the field this season (22.27 on April 26) only trailing Marian Catholic's Nico Agosti (22.25 on May 8). Vincent Moody of Clairton ran the best time at Districts (22.33) by dropping more than half a second from the WPIAL Regionals. Joseph Spearman of Delaware Valley Charter ran his best time of the season way back on March 30, but his 22.58 at District 12 has him back on track to contend at states.
Two guys have broken the 49 second mark in AA for 400 meters this season and they have nearly a full second on everyone else's seasonal bests. 2012 4th place finisher Ben Mason of Annville-Cleona hit that accomplishment at District 3, running 48.98 to top all District performances and defeating AA state leader David Bricker of Trinity (48.88 on May 11). Bricker's teammate Matt Janton has a season best 49.86 from May 11 while Alex Vaughn of Trinity Christian is the only other sub 50 second performer in the field in 2013 (49.91 at District 7).
The defending champion in the 110m high hurdles is back, but will be wearing the black of Newmann Goretti and not the blue of West Catholic. Todd Townsend has the best time of the season in AA (14.38 on March 30) and came close to that mark at District 12, running 14.70. He will have plenty of familiar faces in the field this season who would want to claim gold of their own. 2012 bronze medalist Nick Conway of Port Allegheny has been the best hurdler out west and has a season best of 14.64 from April 13. Jared Horne of Schuylkill Valley (4th in 2012) will also be back and has also run 14.64 this season back on May 11. Nick Pane of Athens Area is also a member of the sub 15 second club with a 14.87 at his league meet.
With Todd Townsend, Neumann Goretti, the 2011 champion and 2012 bronze medalist and 2013 top performer out of the 300 meter hurdles, it is anyone's chance to win the gold medal. Tyler Murphy of Riverview had the best District performance of 38.89 at District 7 and will enter the meet with the only sub 39 second performance this season. Quorteze Levy of Washington ran 39.10 chasing down Murphy at District 7 while Austin Shupp of Palmerton ran 39.29 to win District 11. Nick Conway is the only returning medalist in the field (7th in 2012).
Distance
Shawn Wolfe of Annville-Cleona broke away from the AA pack with a big 1:54.39 800 meter performance at the District 3 championships. Dan Alexander of Lower Moreland (7th in 2012) and James Clements of Christopher Dock went head to head at District 1 and had their best performances of the season. Jordan Jackson of Wellsboro finished 3rd a year ago and Colton Snyder of Northeast Bradford (6th in 2012) is also a returning medalist.
Defending champion Ryan Smathers of North East is back to defend his title in the 1600 meter run. The senior has been a consistent sub 4:20 runner all season long and ran 4:12 in winning the title last year. Curt Jewett of Northeast Bradford was 2nd to Smathers and is back again for the rematch. Jewett does enter the meet with the best 1600 meter time in AA (4:14.59 converted from a full mile at Penn Relays). Jewett's teammate Sam Williams returns with a 2012 medal in pocket (7th). This will be one of the races to watch.
The other big race to watch will be the 3200 meter run and the attempt to break the meet record 9:04.09 and to break the 9 minute mark. Five of the top 8 in 2012 return, including defending champion Brendan Shearn of North Schuylkill and runner up Rico Galassi of Holy Cross. Both have been the owner of the state lead in the event in 2013, with Galassi running 9:10 in late April and Shearn running 9:04 in early May. Williams was 4th last year and can never be counted out. Sub 9 hasn't been done very often in PA, but this will be a great opportunity for fans to witness a shot at history.
Relays
Hickory, West Middlesex, and defending champions and meet record holders Trinity (3) are the only three AA teams to have broken 43 seconds in the 4x100 meter relay this season. Hickory accomplished the feat to win District 10 in 42.52 and top the state list in AA. Trinity ran 42.56 at their league championship and West Middlesex ran 42.75 to win District 10. All three teams finished in the top 4 last year and will be favorites to repeat that feat on Saturday.
Trinity (3) is also a contender to win the 4x400 meter relay. They enter the meet with the best time in the division (3:22.84 on May 11) and ran .03 seconds slower at their District meet. After missing the team title by 4 points last season, this event may decide the team championship for Trinity (3). Annville-Cleona will also be in the mix for team points and the gold in the relay. They have the 2nd best time this season of 3:22.88 and finished 7th last year. Washington has the 3rd best time (3:24.79) and finished 5th in 2012.
Annville-Cleona has far and away the fastest time in AA in the 4x800 meter relay (7:53.67 at District 3) and will be aiming to make up for being 12th in the finals last season. They will have 1:54 anchor leg Shawn Wolfe to help their cause. South Williamsport (7:58.09) and Northeast Bradford (7:58.13) are the only other sub 8 minute squads in the field. Sam Williams and Curt Jewett will use their big race experience to keep them in the mix.
Jumps
Charles Wilson-Adams of Tyrone Area is back to defend his high jump championship. After clearing 6-8 to win the title last year, he has a season best of 6-6.75 at the Penn Relays. 2012 runner up Jared Horne is back after missing out on the title by one inch. Nick Conway of Port Allegheny and Chris Stone of Springfield Montco both cleared 6-7 at their respective District meets and have the best marks of the season. A total of eight competitors have cleared 6-6 this season, which will make the competition all the more exciting for fans.
The boys pole vault has zero returning medalists from 2012, but has six athletes that have cleared 14 feet or higher this season. Gus Yahner of Northern Cambria and Luke Patten of West Middlesex have both cleared 14-6 this season, while Jared Nealy of Homer Center cleared 14 feet at his District championship to give him good momentum going into the state finals.
Defending long jump champion Danny Jackson of Trinity (3) is back and enters the competition with the best mark of the season (22-8.50 at District 3). Jackson clinched the title last season on his 6th and final jump with a huge 23-1.25. Darius Spinks of Washington finished 4th last year and won District 7 with a mark of 22-7.50. Khiry Twyman of Girard College (5th in 2012) and Lindon Caesar of Paul Robeson have jumped over 22-5 in 2013 and will be in the mix to chase Jackson to the title.
2012 bronze medalist Jonathan Jacoway of Sharon has over one foot over the AA field in the triple jump in 2013 with his mark of 48-4.50 at the Mercer County Championships. Daniel Reichenbach of Salisbury enters with the best mark from last weekend's District championships (46-11.25 at District 11) and is the other returning medalist (6th). Kyle McKeen of Northwestern has a 47-2.50 performance from the Baldwin Invite and will look to improve from his 9th place finish last season. Defending champion Jared Horne of Schuylkill Valley is back but hasn't found his 46 foot form from last year just yet.
Throws
The shot put has belonged to 2012 silver medalist Jon Yohman of Wilmington for the majority of the 2013 outdoor season. Yohman has thrown 62-1 this season to top the entire state and has thrown over 60 feet four other times this season. The biggest threat to Yohman will be the 1-2 Schuylkill Valley combination of indoor state champion Jason Coon and Evan Arnott. The duo have been consistently in the mid to high 50s all winter and spring long, with Coon coming the closest to 60 feet (59-7.50 at The Penn Relays). Luke Lewis of Hickory is the other returning medalist (7th) while teammate Jeremy Orlik has come close to 58 feet this season.
Yohman got the best of Arnott last year in the discus to enter 2013 at the defending champion. This season's competition looks like it may come down to these two once again, as their season bests are separated by only 4 inches and they have almost 30 feet over the field. Arnott threw 190 feet on May 3 while Yohman threw 189-6 back on April 20. Mitch Freeman of Coudersport is the other returning medalist (7th).
In the javelin, there are two throwers who have broken the big 200 foot mark in 2013. Matt Krezmer of Montoursville won the District 4 championship with a mark of 204-9 to take over the top spot in the division. Mitch Obenrader of North Clarion threw 200-7 at the Penn Relays and was the leader in the division for most of the season. Brandon Smith of Lewisburg finished 2nd to Krezmer at District 4 but enters with a medal already in pocket (6th in 2012). He has a season best of 197-1. Tyler Donati of Wilmington is the other returning medalist from 2012 (8th).
