Sprints and Hurdles

The boys 100m dash features last year's 4th place finisher Niager Mathis, a senior from Swenson, who comes in with the fastest time, a 10.69 clocking.  Also in the hunt for a medal are Cody Minnig, Neshaminy, Jonathan Dorogy, Seneca Valley, and Keyautay Aulder, Stroudsburg.

The boys 200m dash features lone returner, Malik Jones from Ridley, whose season best 21.62 is faster than the winning time from last years state meet.  Challenges to the crown could come from Qhyle Elijah, Bensalem, Kyle Shivetts, North Allegheny, Christian Brissett, Cheltenham, Francis Jajua, Pennsbury, and Banford Poole, Promise Academy, in this fast and furious race.

In the boys 400m dash there are only two returning finalists.  Last year's 8th place finisher Qhyle Elijah, Bensalem, is a top seed in the event along with Jimmy Brooks, Wilson (3), with both having run 47.81 this year.  Other top seeds who could stick their nose in the fight include 2012 runner-up Malik Jones, Ridley, whose 47.95 is the only other sub-48 on the books this year.  Also look for Niager Mathis, Swenson, and Dave Stellato, Wissahickon.

The boys 110 Hurdles are Wellington Zaza's to lose.  The Garnet Valley senior has improved by leaps and hurdles this year and holds a PR of 13.72 with the next best seed sitting at 14.18 in Central Tech senior Greg Miaczynski.  Zaza's mark is better than the existing PIAA meet record of 13.79. Watch the clock, because 13.61 is the all-time PA mark set in 1995 by the great Deworski Odom of Overbrook. Other medal contenders include Pittston Area senior Ronnie Deliseo and Gateway junior Montae Nicholson.

The boys 300 Hurdles feature three returnees in Wellington Zaza, Garnet Valley, Kellen Williams, Chambersburg, and Jay Stone, Central York.  Zaza is definitely the favorite, and this could be his 2nd title on the day as he leads with a 37.08 clocking.  Stone posted a 37.65 at his district 3 meet.  With such strong competition, could they be on the way to Eric Futch's 36.43 PIAA meet and all-time PA record? Ronnie Deliseo of Pittston, and Justin Maloney, Wilson (3) also stand a chance of upsetting Zaza for the win.  Other medal contenders include Tyler Horton, Bethlehem Catholic, and Carter Taylor, Nazareth Area.


Distance

The boys 800m run features 5 returners from last years final, including runner up Alec Kunzweiler, Cumberland Valley, with a season best of 1:51.68.  Jeffrey Wiseman, Council Rock South, is the only other runner to crack 1:53 with a best of 1:52.72.  He has done it twice in the past month. Other medal contenders include Brad Rivera, Bensalem, Joseph Logue, Pennridge, Zach Brehm, Carlisle, Andrew Stone, LaSalle, Alex Nole, Tunkhannock, and Steve Yannacone, Unionville.

The boys 1600 meter run could dip under 4:10 for the first time in a few years, with returning champ Tom Coyle, LaSalle, and runner-up Jack Huemmler, Strath Haven, leading the charge.  Both have gone under 4:13 this year.  Other returners include James Zingarini, Council Rock North, and Tony Russell, West Chester Henderson.  Other medal contenders include Connor Harriman, Pennsbury, Jeff Groh, Lower Dauphin, Harrison Schettler, Penn Manor, and Kevin Moy, West Chester Henderson.

The boys 3200 meter run could be a deep race this year with the top featured runners all under 9:18 this season.  Brent Kennedy, Kiski Area, leads all qualifiers with a 9:13.35 clocking.  Dominic Deluca, Dallas and Kevin James, O'Hara, have also recorded sub-9:14 times this year.  Ethan Martin, Fox Chapel, Will McDermott, Bonner, Colin Martin, Fox Chapel, and Sam Webb, Pennsbury, could also challenge for a podium spot in the race.  Vinny Todaro, Big Springs, Adam Bodine, Haverford, and Conner Quinn, Hatboro Horsham, could challenge for medals as well.  


Relays

The boys 4x100m relay features several top squads with a chance to win, including Pennsbury, who boast a 41.79 mark in the same race that they beat Neshaminy, 41.84, head to head.  Other teams with a chance at an upset include Gateway, Cheltenham and Coatesville.

The 4x400m relay always excites at Ship! This one should be no different with 7 squads within 2 seconds of each other.  Bensalem leads the pack with a 3:16.07 clocking but Pennridge lurks with a 3:16.45 to their name.  But anything could happen with a pile of squads right on their heels including Ridley, Pennsbury, Penn Wood, Central Bucks West, and Wissahickon.

The boys 4x800m relay could be a big surprise, as no one has dropped any serious time in the relay this year.  That being said, there won't be a lack of excitement!  Bensalem leads the way with a 7:47.94 mark but there are a number of teams on their heels.  Defending champs Cumberland Valley will be pushed by Pennsbury, Carlisle and State College, who are all within 4 seconds and all boast solid squads of their own.  


Jumps

The boys high jump features returning champion Ibn Short, a senior from Milton Hershey, who has cleared 6-10.25 so far this year.  Short has to be at his best to repeat though, as challengers lurk, including Malik Moffett, Cathedral Prep, Elizae McDonald, Coatesville, Horace Spencer, Tennent, and DeShae Lee, Altoona.

The boys long jump could be a battle, as no one has launched a 24' this year, but are bunched in the mid-23' range.  Pop a big one and take the title.  Nolan Hay, Parkland, leads the way along with Isaiah Brooks, Woodland Hills.  Challenging are Shaquille Thomas, Coatesville, Nkosi Jones, Wissahickon, Brian Papich, Fox Chapel, Brandon Smith, Imhotep Charter, and Montae Nicholson, Gateway. In his quest for four golds, this is Wellington's Zaza's biggest challenge. He did win the indoor title with a jump of 23-9 - an inch better than the top seed.

The boys triple jump could result in another state individual state titles for Wellington Zaza, Garnet Valley, who leads the state with his leap of 48-6.  Look for big improvement as he cleared 50' to win last year.  The pack looking to unseat the champ includes Ronald Henderson, York Tech, Jared Alston, North Penn, David Clowney, Stroudsburg, and Corey Muggler, LaSalle, all of whom have cleared 46-6 or better this year.

The pole vault competition in theory belongs to Timothy Moses, Palmyra, who has cleared 16-00 this season, but Dylan Moynihan, Kennard-Dale, lurks with his PR of 15-9.  Other medal contenders who have cleared 15' include Vincent Esposito, North Penn, Kolby Koeck, Altoona, and Ryan Pierson, Spring Ford.  


Throws

The boys shot put is up for grabs unless Anthony Bauccio, Gateway, is on form to his top rank of 57-11.5.  Putters who could challenge include Brandon Waller, Haverford, Tyler Williams, Lower Merion, Samuel Reid, Central, and Brady Logan, Strath Haven, who have all thrown over 56' this year.

The boys javelin features returning 3rd place finisher Cole Proffitt, Manheim Central, who has a best of 205-11 this year when he won the Penn Relays.  The top seed and one to beat along with Proffitt is Ethan Shalaway, Boyertown, with a best of 208-8, launched in winning the District 1 title.  Challenging for medals or perhaps a top-3 finish include Luke Smorey, Baldwin, Rahjeir Miles, Coatesville, and Evan Sing, Penncrest.  

The boys discus could shape up to be a battle between returning finalists Bryan Pearson, Bangor Area, and Max Adams, Hempfield Area (7), with the duo tossing 195-7 and 187-2 respectively.  Pearson leads the state. The battle for a podium spot could happen between Anthony Bouselli, Wallenpaupack, Dylan Morgan, Coatesville, Darrik Muroski, Coatesville, and Travis Reed, Butler.
