SPRINTS
100 - Relatively new faces will likely dot the 100-meter finals, with Swenson Arts senior Amy Hicks favored as the slight odds-on pick to win. Hicks failed to reach the finals a year ago, but heads to the state meet with the top time at 12.03 seconds. Washington junior Alyssa Wise is the highest placing sprinter from a season ago, when she finished third. She's seeded third again. Central Columbia junior Ellen Sheppard, who was seventh in 2012, is seeded second (12.16), while Vincentian junior Ally Bartoszewicz is seeded fourth at 12.22. District 7's Tiarra Scott, who was fourth a year ago, should be in the mix, as well as District 3's Ke'von Lumb, who was fifth. Brookville senior Lanae Newsome is also a threat. The Disttrict 9 runner was eighth a year ago and enters as the fifth seed.
200 - Watch out for an electric race in the 200-meter finals. It could be anyone's race to win, as four sprinters from a year ago could return. Vincentian's Ally Bartoszewicz is not one of them, but the District 7 junior is the seeded favorite, along with Swenson Arts senior Imani Harris-Quillen, who placed second in 2012, with the only sub 25-second times on the board. She's followed by Swenson Arts Tichina Rhodes, who was fourth a year ago, and Washington's Alyssa Wise, who was third, while Central Columbia's Ellen Sheppard, sixth in 2012, is also in the picture. Christopher Dock's Bailey Kratz and Villa Joseph Marie's Ruthe Neeley could also make noise in the final.
400 - There seems to be a legitimate threat to upend Swenson Arts Imani Harris-Quillen's follow-up state championship effort in the 400-meter run. Harris-Quillen enters as the second seed with a 56.20 -- she won a year ago in 56.36 -- and will have to stave off her own teammate, Tichina Rhodes, who enters with the state's top time at 54.75. It should be a fun race, complete with contenders Ruthe Neeley of Beaver Area. The sophomore was fourth a year ago. Paul Robeson junior Quadaisha Newkirk enters as the fourth seed with a time of 57.56. Fifth-seed Nicole Leonzo, who was eight in 2012, has knocked off nearly two seconds off her final time a season ago. Villa Joseph Marie senior Leah Patrick could contend, and freshman Bethany Evankovich enters as the only freshman in the top 8.
100 Hurdles - Four medal winners from a year ago return in the 100-meter hurdles, including last year's state champ, but it could be an uphill climb for Springdale's Emily Lelis to reclaim her win. She enters as the fourth seed, behind leaders Amy Hicks (14.48) and Markeeta Thomas (14.40) of Swenson Arts. Villa Joseph Marie's Gina Lupica, who was third in 2012, enters as the third seed at 14.72. Swenson Arts' Tichina Rhodes could also contend, as well as Windber Area's Jenna Bracken. Montoursville's Terri Stoner was fourth a year ago and returns as the ninth seed.
300 Hurdles - In the 300-meter hurdles, Swenson Art's Markeeta Thomas (43.94) enters as the only competitor with a sub-44s mark -- her 43.94 is PA#4 from the Philadelphia Public Meet. Sayre Area's Elyse Skerpon enters as the numerical favorite with a seed time of 44.55. She's followed almost identically by Carver Engineering & Science's Tehya Noell (44.56) and Springdale's Emily Lelis (44.03). Lelis may have the leg up as last year's champion, though it could be anyone's game. Brookville's Aisha Newsome, who was fourth in 2012, is seeded 13th. Mercer Area's Janette Berger, Mohawk Area's Maria Fleck and Hughesville's Heather Merrifield -- the event's only freshman in the top 17 seed times -- could also contend.
RELAYS
400 Relay - Unquestionably one of the most exciting races of the state meet every year, the 4 x 100-meter final is sure to impress a packed crowd at Seth Grove Stadium. Swenson Arts & Technology, which took the 2012 title, is again seeded first in the field at 46.97. So precise baton work could ultimately lead to a dominating finish over the field, but it is the fast and furious 4x1. Villa Joseph Marie (48.94) is seeded second, while Central Columbia (48.94) is third, Burrell (49.22) is fourth and Christopher Dock (49.95) is fifth. Imhotep Institute Charter (50.06) is sixth with a seed time of 50.06.
1,600 Relay - Swenson Arts & Technology is a mind-bending 12 seconds ahead of the field in the 4 x 400-meter relay. Their seed time of 3:46.13 is significantly faster than second-place Trinity (3:58.74), who is among two others schools -- Paul Robeson and Saint Basil Academy -- with nearly identical seed times. Beaver Aaea (4:02.44), Montoursville (4:03.92), Villa Joseph Marie (4:04.41) and Central Columbia (4:04.74) could be fighting for mid-table placing.
3,200 Relay - It seems like a three-horse race in the 4 x 800-meter relay, as Holy Redeemer (9:27.45), Saint Basil Academy (9:29.46) , and Villa Maria Academy (9:29.51) are all hot on each other's heels. Saint Basil scored the top placing a year ago, so that experience could prove vital, though strategy could be pivotal here as well. Lewisburg Area (9:34.33), Camp Hill (9:35.59) and Montoursville (9:37:72) all could provide challenging competition. Villa Joseph Marie (9:38.74) and Central Cambria (9:39.77) aren't far behind, either.
DISTANCE
800 - The field could be very close in the 800-meter run. Elk County Catholic's Kennedy Weisner was fourth in 2012 with a 2:11.41, though enters with a PA#9 best of 2:13.91, the top seed. Trinity's Shannon Quinn follows in the section with a 2:14.73, though Saint Basil's Katie Cassidy (2:15.36) and Villa Maria's Claire Brown aren't far behind (2:15.59), either. Camp Hill's Zoe Matherne, Schuylkill Valley's Jessica Thies and Karns City's Emily Shumacher could also contend.
1,600 - Perhaps one of the more exciting races of the AA meet could take place in the 1,600-meter run, with two sub-5 runners aiming for the top of the podium. Elk County Catholic's Kennedy Weisner (4:51.06) has a significant edge on Saint Mary's Adair Gennocro (4:56.93) -- who is also running the 3,200 earlier in the day. Weisner was runner-up in 2012, while Gennocro took fourth place. Depending on strategy, anything could happen in this race, though Weisner seems a lock since she will be fresh. Freedom Area's Dee Dee Adams is seeded third (5:01.28), while Avonworth's Beth Schenk is enters in the fourth position at 5:03.20.
3,200 - Five medal returners from a season ago makeup the 3,200-meter run, including state champion Adair Gennocro of Saint Mary's. But Gennocro enters this meet as the third seed with a time of 11:14.81, while Saucon Valley's Elizabeth Chikotas leads the field with a 10:52.46. Gennocro likely is saving her best for last, though the field could be interesting. Troy senior Casey Norton, who was fifth in 2012, enters as the second seed at 11:06.97. Wyomissing's Desi Jagadesan could also contend. Winchester's Madeline Schmiedeknecht is seeded fourth at 11:14.98. Elk County Catholic's Victoria Dippold, Holy Redeemer's Marissa Durako and Neshannock's Lizzie Manickas are strong runners who could surprise.
JUMPS
High jump - Nine girls captured a final jump of 5 feet, 2 inches a season ago in the high jump, which essentially meant that precision was priceless. Milton Area's Joselyn Pascual enters as the top seed after her fifth place showing in 2012 -- at 5-2, coincidentally -- with a top seed of 5-7. She's followed by six others with seeds at 5-4, including medal winners a year ago in Elk County Catholic's Nicole Florio, Northern Schuylkill's Carly Gregas and Lakeview's Courtney King.
Pole vault - Greenville's Rebekah Petty is looking to follow-up her runner-up finish a year ago in the pole vault with a considerably better finish. She enters the event seeded first with a vault of 12-8, which is more than a foot higher than the second seed, Schuylkill Valley's Bre Manzolillo, who owns a result of 11-6. Manzolillo and Trinity's Madison Depner have captured vaults of 11-6, while Salisbury Township's Kaitlyn Toman and Annville-Cleona's Samantha Becker have completed leaps of 11-0.
Long jump - Five senior medal winners from a season ago graduated in the long jump, meaning that this year's field could sport relatively new faces. Brookville's Lanae Newsome is the odds-on favorite with a seed jump of 19-0.5, while New Brighton's Essence Barron is seeded second at 18-2.50. Bishop McDevitt's Ke'von Lumb (18-1.50) and Carver E&S's Tehya Noell (18-1.25) are also in the picture to contend. Mountoursville's Kaylee Caruso and Swenson Art's Amani Nesmith, who was fourth in 2012, could also surprise in the field.
Triple jump - Brookville's Lanae Newsome is looking to repeat in the triple jump. She enters as the leader and the returning state champion with a mark of 40-4. She leads the field by a little under five feet, but watch out for Johnsonburg's Gabbi Benninger, who owns a mark of 37-10.50. Montoursville's Kaylee Caruso is seeded third with a jump of 36-9.25, while Hanover Area's Olivia Jendrezjewski is fourth with a mark of 36-7.25. Paul Robeson's Quadaisha Newkirk is also a threat with a mark of 36-7.
THROWS
Shot put - In the girls' shot put, California's Kailyn Clancy has added nearly three feet to her state mark of a year ago, when she placed second in the field. Clancy is the top seed with a mark of 43-0, while West Middlesex's Rachel DeMaria follows with a seed mark of 41-3. Tamaqua Area's Christine Streisel could be a wildcard pick. Sixth in 2012, Streisel enters with a seed mark of 39-5, third overall in the field. Slippery Rock's Emily Campbell, Shenango's Amanda Herb and Neshannock's Anna Frengel could also contend.
Discus - The top five medals went to seniors a year ago, making this year's girls' discus a mostly new affair at the top of the podium. Northern Schuylkill's Carter Green enters as the top seed in the field with a mark of 152-7, while Julie Falvo is second with a heave of 127-4. The fight for third could be a close one, as Seneca's Samantha Black (126-8), Greenwood's Emily Fisher (122-10), Holy Redeemer's Fallyn Boich (122-02) and Shenandoah Valley's Ahna Huss (122-0) all own marks within the same range.
Javelin - For the second straight year, Fort Cherry could take the girls' javelin field. Junior Jenna Lucas, following in the footsteps of Jessie Merckle, enters as the top seed with a heave of 150-8. That may irk Tamaqua's Christine Streisel, who finished second a season ago and enters as the second seed again at 149-6. Redbank Valley's Brooke Hinderlitter enters as the third seed at 143-2, while Bishop McDevitt's Anna Bailey is fourth at 137-5. Contenders could also include Kane Area's Morgan Nicholson, Johsonburg's Ashely Imbrogno and South Side's Cheyenne Winkle.
