New Balance Games
Rain broke up some of the snow to help some PA schools reach New York City and compete at the New Balance Games. For most teams, this weekend was the last chance to get on a banked track before states, so the stakes were high. The boys were flying in the 4x200 meter relay, with Cheltenham once again leading the charge. The US#1 4x400 meter relay team finished 2nd in the finals with a US#3 time of 1:28.61, the 5th fastest time ever recorded by a PA squad! Upper Darby finished 3rd in 1:29.83, good for PA#2. St Joe's Prep took over the state lead in the distance medley relay with a 2nd place finish in a US#7 10:29.15. Osiris Nicholson of Church Farm School was the lone PA winner on the boys side, winning the 55 meter dash in 6.45. Kornelius Klah of Pennsbury finished 5th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.86. Penn Wood closed the gap on Cheltenham in the 4x400 meter relay with a US#3 3:21.66. For the girls, we now have three Millrose Games qualifiers in the girls race on February 14. On Saturday, Olivia Sargent of Pennsbury punched her ticket to the big race, running a PA#2 and US#4 4:55.17. Her teammate Hannah Molloy finished 6th in the full 2 mile run with a time of 11:24.61. Aliyah Staten of Girls High finished 3rd in the long jump with a mark of 17-4.50. Cardinal O'Hara were a quarter of a second off earning the state lead in the distance medley relay, running a PA#2 12:21.99 to finish 3rd. Aspen Gaita of Stroudsburg ran 8.26 to finish 4th in the 55 meter hurdles. Dasia Pressley of Pennsbury finished 2nd in the 55 meter dash with a PA#3 7.08. She then joined her teammates in the 4x200 meter relay and finished 3rd with a PA#2 and US#4 1:40.96! Agnes Mansaray of Penn Wood ran 3:00.19 to finish 5th in the 1000 meter run. Late night action saw Pennsbury sweep the boys and girls 4x800 meter relays. The girls ran a PA#2 9:32.06 for their victory, while the boys became the first team in the state to break 8 minutes this season, running a US#3 7:57.76, which included a 1:55 anchor split. Mckenna Keegan of Avon Grove showed her event range, stepping up to the 600 meter distance and winning with a US#6 1:34.96. PA teams also swept the sprint medley relays. Central Bucks West ran a US#4 4:08.94 with a 2:14 anchor split, while Cheltenham ran a national leading 3:26.11 to win the boys event! Girls Highlights

Kevin Dare High School Invitational
The overnight storm kept several teams from getting to the meet, leaving open lanes in many of the early events on the day. But once the meet got going, the performances took off with them, as the teams that did show up were on fire! PA had two US#1 performances on the day, and the first one was made by 60 meter hurdles state record holder Ciara Leonard of Cheltenham. The senior continues to be unstoppable in the event, and today she was the first girl in the country to break 8.50 at the 60 meter distance with a meet record of 8.47! Her day was just getting started, as she joined her teammates in the 4x200 meter relay where they were victorious against the former state leaders Susquehanna Township. Cheltenham ran a US#3 1:39.46 to earn the win, under a half a second away from their state record 1:39.00! Springside ran 1:42.56 to finish 5th and earn PA#3 honors. The other US#1 performance came from red hot Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley. The junior was running her first 3000 meter race of the season and squared off against top miler Marissa Sheva of Pennridge. The two of them were side by side for 12 laps, until Clahane made a big move with 3 laps to go and earn a big win! Her time of 9:59.40 is the first sub 10 minute performance in the country, and is the first sub 10 minute race in January for a PA runner since Tessa Barrett last year when she set the state record the 1st of 3 times. Other girls highlights on the day include Chanel Brissett of Cheltenham edging out Taylor Chapman in the 60 meter dash 7.55 to 7.56 for US#7 and 8 honors respectively for the duo. Brooklynn Broadwater of Springside Chestnut Hill improved on her state lead in the 400 meter dash, winning the event in a US#3 55.46! Nicole Burke of Cheltenham ran a PA#2 56.95 to finish 4th. Broadwater also led her 4x400 meter relay to victory over Cheltenham with a US#7 3:53.64 to Cheltenham's US#8 3:54.21. Erica Voyzey of Tyrone Area cleared 5-8 to win the high jump for the 3rd time this season at the exact same height. Jocelen Ruth of Kutztown Area threw 44-4 to win the shot put. Katy Alberici of Susquehanna Township took back the state lead in the triple jump with a 3rd place finish of 36-7.25. For the boys, Casey Comber of Hatboro Horsham made his first appearance of the indoor season, winning the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:02.75. State College ran a state leading 8:05.64 to win the 4x800 meter relay. Kellin Valentine of State College jumped 22-2.50 to win the long jump. Girls Highlights

Kevin Dare Preview It will be a mini state meet preview in the girls sprints at the annual Kevin Dare Invitational on Saturday. After the meet, someone will have a big advantage on their path to state meet glory. In the 60 meter dash, Taylor Chapman of Pennridge will face off against Chanel Brissett of Cheltenham and Dasia Pressley of Pennsbury. Chapman is on top of the state in the 55 and 60 meter dashes, but this will be her greatest challenge against the two girls who got the best of her at states. The three of them will be joined by Brooklynn Broadwater of Springside in the 200 meter dash after her exploits in the 400 meter dash that will occur earlier in the meet. Broadwater is PA#2 behind PA#1 Chapman, while Pressley is the reigning state champion. Something's gotta give! Meanwhile, Ciara Leonard of Cheltenham will be running the 60 meter hurdles, an event where she has been unstoppable since losing at states at Penn State last March. She is the reigning state record holder. In the distance races, Marissa Sheva of Pennridge will be making her first appearance since December 20 when she ran a 4:50.73 mile in New York. She will be running the 3000 meters where she will have her hands full against Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley, Olivia Sargent and Hannah Molloy of Pennsbury, and Brooke Hutton of Coatesville. In the mile, Lizzie Morris of Central Bucks East will battle with the Pennsbury duo of Maddie Sauer and Meredith Twomey. Former PA#1 in the 800, Terri Turner of Springside Chestnut Hill, will look to get close to the number 1 spot against Natasha Fedkina of State College. In the field, Erika Voyzey of Tyrone Area will look to make it 3 wins in 3 meets at Penn State this season. She has cleared a state leading 5-8 in her previous appearance. Tesia Kempski of Bishop McDevitt will look to earn sole possession of the top spot in the pole vault, as she shares the spot with 2 other girls at 12 feet. Jocelen Ruth of Kutztown threw 45 feet for the first time in the shot put this season, and has closed the gap at the top to within 2.5 feet. Can she close the gap once again? In the triple jump, you have the state champion Uchechi Onuoha of Pennsbury facing off against the former state leader Katy Alberici of Susquehanna Township, and sophomore Steph Laudien of Hempfield (3). Alberici and Laudien will also compete in the long jump against 18 footer Ariana Przybylowski of Pennridge. For the boys, Eli Mencer of Altoona will look to record fast FAT times in the 60 and 200 meter dashes after some solid hand time performances earlier this season. Kornelius Klah of Pennsbury will be competing in the 60 meter hurdles, looking to take his 55 meter hurdles success into the longer distance. The mile will feature Andrew Marston of Conestoga looking to put himself in the running for the mile top spot. He will be challenged by 4:28 Kyle Shinn of Wyomissing and Alex Milligan of State College. The 3000 meter run will feature the full debut of Casey Comber of Hatboro Horsham. Comber will be making his first appearance in an open event since the December 13 Foot Locker Finals. Out to spoil his return will be Zach Seiger of Red Land, Sam Webb of Pennsbury, and Aiden Demko of Hershey. In the field, Kellin Valentine of State College will be competing in the long jump and triple jump. He is one of three 23 foot plus long jumpers this season. Can he close the gap and become a legitimate threat to the long jump champion Isaiah Brooks? |

TSTCA Indoor Meet #1
Fortunately, the cancellations upon cancellations at the Edinboro University dome last winter did not continue into the 2015 season. The TSTCA meet series got off to a great start this weekend as many Western PA athletes were eager to begin their seasons or continue them with strong performances. Jordan Geist of Knoch was the show stopper of the day, adding nearly 17 inches to his lifetime best in the shot put, winning with a US#4 throw of 63-2.50! The West Allegheny power duo of Alexis O'Shea and Lauren Costa continued with their winning ways in the west, as O'Shea won one event and Costa took two. Costa won the girls' 200m in 26.13 after winning the 60m finals in a PA#5 7.79 for a fairly comfortable victory. West Allegheny senior Alexis O'Shea cruised to the girls' mile win after leading a huge pack through a rather slow 800m in just a little under2:45 before breaking it up and negative-splitting on her way to a 5:20.88. Later in the day, O'Shea was bested by the Villa Maria duo of junior Claire Brown and senior Grace Trucilla. With a lap to go, Trucilla and Hempfield's Megan Powell were dueling it out with a decent lead, when Brown came out of nowhere and pulled out a powerful finishing kick on the final straightaway to barely edge out her teammate by less than a second. Sophomore Julia Kooser of Seneca Valley dominated the girls' 3000m by breaking away late and making it her race. Kooser edged Bethel Park's Danielle Hinish to cut into the rankings for a PA#9 10:34.45. Woodland Hills senior Isaiah Brooks held his spots atop the PA standings in the long and triple jumps this weekend, winning both comfortably at TSTCA with 23-03 for the long jump and 45-03.50 for the triple. Not only can Brooks jump, but he also proved his speed by winning the 60m dash finals in 7.18. The men's 4x200m was the thrill of the day. Butler and Bethel Park were giving all they had on the last straightaway, but Butler ended up with the most guts and barely edged its competitor with a 1:35.03 to Bethel Park's 1:35.05. Todd Gunzenhauser of Mount Lebanon did not get enough love from the FAT system to dip under the 9 minute mark in the 3000 meter run. He was victorious in 9:00.01, just missing the group of 10 who have broken 9 minutes this season. Girls Highlights
