As far as December goes, Gabrielle Wilkinson couldn't have asked for a better start to her senior season.
The Friends' Central senior already qualified for the Millrose Game High School Mile a few weeks ago, running 4:56 at the AT&T Hall Of Fame Coaches Invitational. She returned to the Armory on Friday for the Marine Corps Holiday Classic to race the 800 meters against big names like Victoria Vanriele of New Jersey and Katherine Lee of New York.
But Wilkinson handled the field well, despite being hospitalized earlier in week! Wilkinson went 2:10.81 for the win pulling away from the rest of the field.
While it's not a PR, it's still a really fast time to drop before the new year. When Wilkinson ran her indoor PR of 2:06.87 at indoor nationals, she didn't run 2:10 until the state meet that year. It proves she is well ahead of schedule early on this season.
The Millrose Games mile is on her mind, but looking down the line, it will be interesting to see just how fast Wilkinson can go in the 800 meters.
