AAA Girls' Pole Vault Preview
Mackenzie Horn of Manheim Township vaulted her way to the top of the all-time Pennsylvania pole vault list on Friday, clearing 13-07.25 to break the state record by a quarter inch. That came indoors because of the weather. Assuming the weather is good to go over the weekend, she'll be outside and could be looking for even more. The indoor state champ will look to add an outdoor AAA state title to her resume before her career is over.
But a state title is no given for Horn with the depth that this state brings. The defending AAA champ is back in Carena Nottoli of Hempfield. Last year, she went 12-06 to win the title. It will likely take a better vault than that this year, nut Nottoli is a strong competitor with a lifetime best of 12-09.
Then there's Abby Norwillo of Pittston Area. She's a consistent performer. She was second to Nottoli at states last year and then second to Horn at indoor states. She's vaulted 13 or better on numerous occasions and will be in the mix comes the state meet. Molly DeBone of Hempfield Area is another returning medalist. She took fifth last spring.
Scranton Preparatory's Victoria Atkinson, Manheim Township's Sydney Horn, and Abington Heights' Danielle Heine are the other girls in this field with season bests of over 12 feet or better. This a deep field with a number of girls with seeds at 11-00 and 11-06, so expect some stellar competition in front of a big Shippensburg crowd.
