PIAA States Preview: Boys' Jumps

AA Boys' Long Jump Preview

It's been a strong season for AA boys long jumpers, with four boys entering the state meet having jumped 23 feet or better. Expect a close one here for the top spot.

The top-ranked jumper in the field is Julian Fleming from Southern Columbia. The 5-star wideout on the football field is having an impressive junior season in the jumps. He leapt a season best of 23-10.75 at Lock Haven and has his sights set on 24 feet this weekend. But Fleming, who won the District 4 title last week, will be challenged.

Joseph Kearney of North Catholic is the top seed after leaping 23-5 for the WPIAL title this past week. He was 12th at states a year ago, but should make a big leap upwards this season. Hickory's Brian Phillips and Palisades' Josh Volak also eclipsed 23 feet to win their respective meets last week. Volak went 23-4.5 to win District 11, about a foot and a half better than his previous best. He'll look to replicate that at Ship. Phillips was ninth a year ago at states, but he likely won't miss the podium this year, and could take the top spot. He was second at the indoor state meet, and having a big senior season.

The only returning medalist in the field is Bryan Dworek of Brookville Area, who was seventh a year ago. The District 9 champ jumped 22-7.25 this spring and should be a factor.  Others to watch for include Salisbury Township's Delano McKenzie, Dock Mennonite's Austin Nice, and Athens Area's Benjamin Gambrell.
