AA Boys' 300m Hurdles Preview
Michael Tomlin, the defending state champion in the AA 300 meter hurdles, isn't in the field this season, so we'll see a new state champion in the event. Expect a close race between some talented intermediate hurdlers.
Calvin Wetzel of Riverside comes in as the top seed and top AA boy in the field. He went 38.86 to win the 300 hurdles at the WPIAL Championships, which matched his PR that he set in the state final last year, a race that he placed fourth in. He's the lone returner in the state from that final.
Derek Herr of Littlestown will look to take the win, though. The senior has had a strong season, including a PR of 38.99 to win the District 3 title in the event. Herr and Wetzel are the only two in the field to have run sub-39.
A host of others have gone sub-40 this season. Payton Rohrbaugh of Bermudian Springs was second to Herr in District 3. he;'s run 39.17 this season and should be a factor in this field. Keystone's Brody Coleman picked up the District 9 win over Brookville's Dillon Olson last week. Both have run in the low 39s and could make a run at the state title.
Lewisburg's Zach Bedell, Hill-Freedman's RaAr Corinaldi, Grove City's Connor McEwen have all run sub-40 this season and will be in contention for state medals in a wide open 300 meter hurdles in AA.
