AA Boys' 100m Preview
The AA boys was dominated for four years by four-time champion Jahvel Hemphill of Bloomsburg and then last year by Austin Kratz of Dock Mennonite. This year, the event is as wide open as it has been in a long time and it should be a close battle for the state crown.
The top seed and top-ranked AA 100 meter runner in the field is Marlin Devonshire of Aliquippa. He's one of two returning medalists from a year ago and the top returner overall after a fifth lace finish last year. He dropped a nice PR of 10.67 to win the WPIAL title last week and appears to be hitting peak form at the right time. He's the one to beat here.
But it will be close for sure. Brookville Area, which boasts a terrific 4x100, has a pair of title contenders. Ian Thrush and Bryan Dworek went 1-2 at the District 9 Championships with Thrush taking the win in 10.81. Dworek, meanwhile, has a 10.76 to his name this season. Those two will be in the mix for the win.
District 12 will bring some good talent to Ship. Tyler Byrd of Bishop McDevitt was the D12 champ; he went 10.83 earlier this season and will contend. Imhotep's Hafis Upshaw and Motivation's Nasir Savage will be in the mix too. Savage is the other returning medalist from last year along with Devonshire.
Dequay Canton of Carlynton had a breakthrough at WPIALs, taking second to Devonshire and runnign 10.80 in the prelims. He can't be slept on in this field. Jim Thorpe's Jarrin Geisinger ran an impressive 10.89 to win the District 11 crown; look for him to make a run at the title. Farrell's Christian Lewis and Southern Columbia's Julian Fleming also went sub-11 to win their respective district titles last week and will be among the top entries in this field.
