PIAA States Preview: Boys' Throws

AA Boys' Javelin Throw Preview

Who's got their best on the right day? Frequently that's what decides state champions in the javelin. That will likely be the case in the AA jav, where the field is stacked with talent.

At PA No. 1 (regardless of classification) in the event is Palmerton Area's Chris Fredericks, who launched a big throw of 206-3 at a dual meet earlier this season. He followed that up with a 205-1 throw at his conference and then he won the District 11 title. That consistency will bode well for him on Friday morning, and he looks to be the favorite. He was ninth a year ago, but he will most certainly make the podium this time around.

But the top seed heading into the weekend is Northwest Area's Matt Saxe. The junior broke the 200-foot barrier with a 200-9 to win the District 2 title. He'll look to ride that momentum into Friday. Another 200+ boy in the field is Wyomissing Area's Evan Niedrowski, who tossed the javelin 201-11 at his home invite. He comes in as the District 3 champ and should be a factor for the win.

Waynesburg Central's Scott Benco has a season best of 192-6. Grove City's Nick Smither, Sharon's Noah Weese, and Central Columbia's Cole Heintzelman have all thrown over 180 feet this season. Those boys are all among the title hopefuls this weekend on Ship's all-weather runway.
