Individuals Preview
Kutztown's Mitchell Brett will have his sights set on a repeat title in D3-A. Brett pulled away for the win in the rain at last year's District 3 Championships. Now a junior, he'll be shooting for the repeat. At the state meet, Brett went on to take 41st place.
He should get a good challenge from John Whitcomb of Fairfield Area. Last year, he was third in the district behind Brett and now-graduated Alex Rosenberry. Whitcomb was 44th at states, just a few ticks behind Brett.
Eric Shelton of the Christian School of York is the only other returner from the top ten at the district meet last year. He took fifth at Big Spring before going on to take 65th in the state. He'll hope to challenge for the D3-A win this fall.
Among the others to watch for in the district include York Catholic's Joseph Rizzuto, Fairfield's Gabe Schubring, and Camp Hill's Matt Gurgiolo.
Team Preview
Fairfield Area proved to have the best depth in D3-A last season, as it took home the title, and with it, the lone state qualifying spot in the district. Led by Whitcomb, and the emergence of ninth grader Schubring, Fairfield scored 61 points to win by 23. At states, the team placed 11th.
Six of the team's seven varsity boys, including that strong top two, is back and Fairfield will once again be the team to beat in D3-A.
The 2017 D3-A champs Kutztown Area will look to give Fairfield a run for the top spot. They also return six of seven varsity runners from last year's third place team. Brett leads the way up front, and Kutztown has a nice pack made up of those 2-3-4-5 runners that will look to bridge the gap to the defending individual champ.
York Catholic, second last year, loses a bunch of varsity runners to graduation. It will look to rebuild this season to become a contender once again. '18 fourth place finishers Camp Hill have six boys back from last year's team and will look to make a run at returning to the top of the district. Trinity, too, will be a team worth watching for.
