Boys' 60 Meter Dash Preview
Strap in for what is among the day's deepest events on the boys' side with the 60 meter dash. Expect a close and fast race in a very talented field.
Coming in at PA No. 1 and the top seed is Harrisburg's Donte Kent, who has seriously broken through this winter. He went 6.87 earlier in the season in the 60 dash and then popped a state leader of 6.84 at a State College Invite. He enters the weekend at US No. 8 and will look to take home the title.
But there is no shortage of challengers with three others coming in with sub-6.90 times to their name and plenty of others right on that doorstep. There's Shawn Brown of Central Dauphin East. The senior is the reigning outdoor 100m state champion and ran a best of 6.86 this season. He won at Kevin Dare at Penn State earlier this season and will be a tough one to beat back at PSU.
Nashawn Dunbar of Wyomissing Area has been the surprise of the winter. The soccer player is in his first season of track and field and has been turning heads. He ran 6.88 to take fourth at the Millrose Games and will be among the most interesting ones to watch in this field. Kent's Harrisburg teammate Kamere Day will be a factor as well. Third at outdoor states last spring in the 100m, Day is a terrific talent and also capable of taking home the gold.
Haverford School's Daiyaan Hawkins has been strong all season in the sprints in eastern PA. He ran a best of 6.90 to win the TFCAofGP Meet of Champions and should be right in the mix, as well, for the win. Chambersburg's Tyeshawn Worrell won the PTFCA Carnival with a best of 6.92 against a good field. He's yet another contender in this field.
The others on the long list of sub-7 boys in this field include JP McCaskey's Dejon Manning (6.93), Wilson's Ethan Capitano (6.94), West Chester Rustin's Drew Gallen (6.94), and CD East's Bryce Baker (6.96), Motivation's Laminu Abbas (6.97), and Wilkes-Barre's Rafael McCoy (6.97).
Like the girls 60, this is a wide open field, and the key to coming out on top will be managing the rounds and saving their best for the final. And it will be a good final.
