PIAA States Preview: Girls' Throws

AA Girls Discus Preview

While Ashlyn Giles' shot put accolades have been impressive, how about what she's done in the discus? Giles broke a 37-year-old Pennsylvania state record at the BCIAA Firing Meet with a toss of 169-2. She enters the state meet currently at US No. 3 with that mark and will be the big favorite to win her first state title.

Giles, of Schuylkill Valley, threw 147-11 last week to win the District 3 title. It's not quite her best, but it still puts her over 12 feet ahead of the next highest seed. Like the shot put, Giles will have a good chance at taking down the meet record, which stands at 162-10 set in 1997 by Heather Colyer.

Looking to score the upset will be one of the five girls who have thrown over 130 feet in the disc this year. Burgettstown's Miranda Schramm, who was eighth at states two years ago, tossed a PR of 135-3 to win the WPIAL title last week. She's in a good spot heading into Ship.

District 4 champion Madison Downs of Lewisburg has a best of 132-4 this season. She will have a good shot at a high podium finish. United's Maizee Fry (131-11 SB), Quaker Valley's Claire Kuzma (131-2), Riverside's Sydney Hale (130-1.5 SB), and Shenango's Emma Callahan (127-3 SB) are among the others who will contend for a top three finish.
