AAA Boys Shot Put Preview
In the past 10 Class AAA boys shot put state finals, 5 winners have emerged with throws well over 61 feet. The other five years, the winning throw averaged just under 58 feet.
Where will the pendulum swing this year? The overall top 3 performers in this year's district meets were just north of the 58-foot line, and the same trio led the AAA yearly list. Sounds like a close battle in the works.
Four weeks ago, Daniel Norris of Hempfield Area (7) separated himself from the crowd on the performance list with three marks over 62 feet, with his season-best 62-4 throw still No. 1 in AAA. The senior also topped 60 feet in winning the WPIAL title.
The only other 60-plus thrower in district competition was fellow senior Cody Breidenbach of Nazareth Area. The District 11 champ turned in his best performance so far in 2021 to win gold with a toss of 60-3.
Also this month, District 5 winner Dustin Hyde of Somerset Area had a 60-4 put to match his indoor PR from the 2020 PTFCA Indoor Championships. Other throwers surely to be in contention include Northern Lebanon's Dylan Lambrecht, who started his 2021 indoor season with a PR 60-3 for third in the VA Showcase in Virginia Beach, and Plum's Logan Parker, who finished second in the WPIAL final with a season best.
